Semiconductor ETF options show caution ahead of Nvidia results

Reuters5 days ago

NEW YORK, May 27 (Reuters) - Traders in the options markets are bracing for industry-wide volatility when AI-chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab reports results on Wednesday, with defensive options contracts on a major semiconductor ETF drawing heavy trading.
For VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH.O), opens new tab, the largest semiconductors ETF with some $22 billion in assets, about 2.4 put options changed hands daily over the last 10 days against every call option traded, the most defensive the trading has been in about 10 months, according to Trade Alert data.
Call options convey the right to buy shares at a fixed price in the future while put contracts offer the right to sell the shares at a given price.
"The put buying in SMH ahead of Nvidia's earnings reflects growing concern about potential volatility for the entire sector following the report," said Chris Murphy, co-head of derivative strategy at Susquehanna Financial Group.
On Tuesday, some 105,000 put options changed hands against about 16,000 call options, by 3 p.m. ET (1900 GMT), Trade Alert data showed.
In one notable trade, one investor last week bought 50,000 put options in SMH that would guard against the ETF's shares slipping about 10%, to below $220, by the end of May.
Nvidia accounts for about a fifth of the semi ETF's assets but due to its dominance in the artificial intelligence market, the chipmaker's influence goes beyond its weight in the fund, analysts said.
While investors have been focused on defensive plays in the SMH ETF, options action on Nvidia itself was more mixed, Murphy said.
Murphy said investors were selling options to take advantage of heightened volatility expectations around the chipmaker's earnings, meaning they were betting the reaction to the chipmaker's results will not be overly severe.
"It's been hedging in SMH while in NVDA they're tactically monetizing elevated premiums ahead of earnings," he said. Susquehanna makes markets in the securities of Nvidia.
Interactive Brokers' list of the 25 most active securities by client orders showed Nvidia ranked second, underlining the heightened investor interest in the results. Still, the stock was only one of two names for which investors were net sellers.
"That likely reflects some caution ahead of earnings after a solid run," Steve Sosnick, Interactive Brokers' chief strategist, said in a note. Nvidia will be the last of the "Magnificent Seven" megacap tech and growth companies to report results for this period. Their stocks have been mixed in 2025 after leading the market higher as a group in the last two years.
For the year, Nvidia shares are up about 0.7%, while SMH shares are up about 1.2%.

Indivior to delist from London Stock Exchange, maintain Nasdaq listing

June 2 (Reuters) - Pharma firm Indivior (INDV.L), opens new tab said on Monday it will cancel its secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange, effective July 25, maintaining its primary listing on the Nasdaq to reduce costs and better align with its U.S.-centric business. The company, known for its opioid addiction treatment, joins a growing number of companies delisting from London, as lower valuations and weak investor appetite continue to drive firms toward U.S. markets. Shares of Indivior, which floated in London in late 2014, have dropped more than 60% from record highs hit in June 2018. The company said over 80% of its revenue now comes from the U.S., with the Nasdaq (NDAQ.O), opens new tab accounting for about 75% of recent trading volumes. The delisting aims to streamline operations and reflect the company's strategic focus on the U.S. market, it said. Indivior moved its primary listing to the United States last year. The decision to delist from London comes just months after Indivior overhauled its management. Earlier this year, it appointed David Wheadon as chair and Joe Ciaffoni as CEO.

China accuses US of ‘seriously violating' trade war truce

Update: Date: 2025-06-02T06:36:56.000Z Title: Introduction: China accuses US of 'seriously violating' trade truce Content: Good morning, and welcome to our rolling coverage of business, the financial markets and the world economy. Trade war tensions are on the rise again, as relations between China and the US deteriorate. Beijing has hit back this morning against Washington, accusing the US of 'seriously violating' the trade truce which the two powers agreed in Zurich last month. China's commerce ministry also promised to take forceful measures to safeguard its interests, rejecting a claim from Donald Trump last week that China has 'totally violated' its trade agreement with the US. In a statement, the ministry said: 'The U.S. government has unilaterally and repeatedly provoked new economic and trade frictions, exacerbating uncertainty and instability in bilateral economic and trade relations.' Beijing accused the US of unilaterally introducing new discriminatory restrictions, including new guidelines on AI chip export controls, curbs on chip design software sales to China and the revocation of Chinese student visas, Bloomberg reports. Stock markets across the Asia-Pacific region have dropped today, as investors fret that the détente between the two sides is fraying. Last Friday, the US president – perhaps stung by jibes that Trump Always Chickens Out – declared that China 'HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US.', raising fears that the trade war will continue to rattle the global economy. This latest uncertainty is hurting the US dollar. It has slipped against a basket of currencies, with the pound up almost half a cent at $1.35, and the euro gaining a third of a cent to $1.138. The legality of Trump's trade war was also thown into doubt last week, when a US federal court ruled that his 'liberation day' tariff plan is illegal, only for a federal appeals court to temporarily reinstate the tariffs while the case progresses. 9am BST: Eurozone manufacturing PMI for May 9.30am BST: UK manufacturing PMI for May 9.30am BST: Bank of England mortgage approvals and credit conditions data 3pm BST: US manufacturing PMI for May
