
Leapmotor T03 review: The UK's best value new EV at £199 per month
Leapmotor may be a new name to the UK car market, but you'll be able to buy one from some pretty familiar dealers. Thanks to the Chinese firm's tie-up with Stellantis, you'll find Leapmotors popping up in many Stellantis brand dealers, like Vauxhall, Citroen, Peugeot, Jeep or Fiat.
That Stellantis relationship means the T03 is actually built in Europe, too – in Poland to be precise – although right-hand drive cars are currently still coming from China.
The T03 is resolutely a little urban runabout, with only the Dacia Spring beating it to the title of Britain's cheapest EV. But where the two cheapest Dacias are somewhat spartan, without even a touchscreen to talk about, the one-trim-only Leapmotor T03 comes with plenty of kit, including some real luxury features.
Whether anybody wants or would use adaptive cruise control on a T03 remains to be seen, but there are plenty of other conveniences. Driver assistance, safety and advanced bits of kit are frankly amazing at this price.
You'll find quality is a step up from the Dacia, too. While the drive is perfectly good enough for a round town runabout – the ride can be a bit choppy, but it's not too uncomfortable – there's reasonable space in the back for a couple of passengers.
It's just a shame the car looks a bit awkward – a bit like a Fiat 500 that's had a botched nose job.
How we tested
We were introduced to the Leapmotor T03 near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, where we drove through the local towns and on plenty of country lanes, including some of the worst road surfaces in the UK. And, of course, we sat in the back and tested the boot.

Battery, range, charging, performance and drive
Many people don't drive 165 miles in a week, let alone a day. For those folk, a T03 will be perfectly acceptable. It's an affordable EV transport. Leapmotor claims that if you stick to urban routes – as you probably would in a T03 – you may even get over 200 miles on a single charge.
You'll not get super-fast charging with a T03 – what do you expect for £15,995? – but it will charge on a fast charger at up to 48kW giving a 30 to 80 per cent charge in 36 minutes. More likely you'll be charging on a 7kW home or public charger, with the same charge taking 3.5 hours.
At slow speeds, the noise the electric motor makes is a little odd. Accelerating and slowing gives a rising and falling noise that sounds like a police car. We doubt anybody is really going to notice a difference if you select sport mode – yes, there is one – or even eco come to that. Just leave it in standard and you'll be fine.
Given the car's short wheelbase, the ride can feel a little choppy over bumps or road humps, but it's acceptable. We only managed some faster A-roads on our test routes, but it handled 60mph okay and the acceleration felt nippy enough from the 94bhp motor, despite a claimed 0-62mph time of 12.7 seconds.
There's decent visibility and manoeuvrability is fine. The car is easy to park and thread through city streets.
Interior, practicality and boot space
Another surprise is how spacious the T03 feels inside. Unlike in something like the Hyundai Inster (which is much more expensive) bigger drivers and passengers won't feel like their shoulders are close to the door frame or the person next to them. It's reasonably comfortable inside the T03, with good headroom in the front and the back.
Rear passengers have reasonable space, too, although the door aperture isn't the widest, as you might expect from such a small car. There's plenty of room to put your feet under the front seats and the deep side windows mean there's a good view out. The boot is small and one of the only signs of cost-cutting we could find was the lack of a parcel shelf.
If you've tried a Dacia Spring and then a Leapmotor T03, you'll be impressed by the quality in the Leapmotor for the price. The cabin isn't awash with soft materials – it does feel a bit cheap – but it looks okay and the doors shut with a more reassuring thud than the cheap 'tink' noise that the Dacia's doors shut with.
Technology, stereo and infotainment
The Leapmotor may boast an 8in driver display and 10in infotainment touchscreen, but we found the latter fiddly and frustrating to use, while there's only Bluetooth connectivity – no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which is a shame.
There's an in-built navigation system, although it froze on our test – a quick turn off and turn on again got it going again. Hopefully, the usability and maybe even the addition of CarPlay and Android Auto can be fixed with over-the-air updates, which the T03 can get.
As for that kit on board, you get keyless start, a good-sized sunroof (although not entirely panoramic as the Leapmotor blurb suggests), a rear-view camera and parking sensors, air-con, auto headlights and an electronic handbrake.
You'll want for nothing with a host of safety and driver assistance features, too, with blind spot detection, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a few too many intrusive bings and bongs that remind you what these systems are doing.
Prices and running costs
It's not just the list price that's competitive. Leapmotor promises a four-year finance deal at £199 a month after paying a deposit of £199. Whether anybody wants to keep a Leapmotor for four years with cheap new EVs coming from other Chinese brands – and even Volkswagen and its sister brands – remains to be seen.
There's only one spec, but a choice of three colours: white will cost you nothing, but starry silver or glacier blue will add a sizeable £650 to your bill.
Running costs should be low, especially if you have access to a low-rate electricity tariff, while there's a four-year warranty on the car and eight year's cover for the battery.

The Leapmotor T03 is all about value, and it offers plenty. Some people don't need an EV that'll do mega-miles on a single charge and will be perfectly happy with a little runabout that comes loaded with kit, offers an okay drive and reasonable space for the occasional rear passengers.
If you're not bothered by an unknown badge, the Leapmotor T03 makes plenty of sense.

So you can 'brim' the battery every time without depleting it. Both roll on Hankook tyres. Another positive. Even the lime green paint job is free. How safe is it? It's engineered to attain a four-star safety rating. The body uses 68 per cent high-strength steel and the car is brimming with anti-crash gear. The car will be made in Hungary soon – and avoid tariffs. I told you BYD would quickly chime with UK drivers and the Chinese are already outselling Honda, Citroen, Fiat and more. Home Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, was the last minister to agree funding in the government spending review. Once the NHS and defence were settled there wasn't enough to go round. The police wanted more. Everyone over the state pension age in England and Wales with an income of £35,000 or less will receive the winter fuel payment after all, at a cost of £1.25 billion, Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced. Capital spending included £39 billion on social housing over the next ten years. The government also committed £14.2 billion for the new Sizewell C nuclear power station, but did not say where the money was coming from. Rolls-Royce was selected as the preferred bidder to build the country's first small modular reactors. Unemployment rose to 4.6 per cent, its highest level since 2021, up from 4.5 per cent. The Sizewell delusion
The Chancellor's promise of £14 billion for the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk is hardly news. The project has been talked about for 15 years while the existing UK nuclear estate has gradually been shut down and the only other new station, Hinkley Point in Somerset, has stumbled to a decade-long delay and £28 billion of budget overruns. Quite some optimism – verging on Milibandian delusion – is required to embrace the idea that Sizewell will come quicker and cheaper because it will replicate Hinkley Point while avoiding its mistakes. And since Chinese money has been ruled out, it's still a mystery as to who else will pay for the project beside HMG and the French utility company EDF. Unarguably, we need a constant baseload of nuclear power to stop the lights going out in mid-century: commitment to Sizewell can't be all wrong, despite local objections. But what's intriguing about this week's news is that it coincides with the naming of Rolls-Royce as 'preferred bidder' to deliver the UK's first small modular reactors, in theory much easier to bring to fruition. If SMRs can really deliver nuclear power one town at a time by the mid-2030s, as planned, Hinkley Point and unfinished Sizewell will begin to look like dinosaurs. The simple truth is that both should have been done and dusted a generation ago. But nuclear decision-ducking has been a shame on successive governments for as long as most of us can remember. Defensive stocks My recent suggestion of a 'Rearmament Isa' that would incentivise savers to buy shares in UK manufacturers of military kit brought a positive response from one former defence minister but not from the current Chancellor who, let's face it, may not be among my most devoted readers. Nevertheless, I'm hoping the idea might feature in an Isa overhaul this autumn, because last week's £68 billion defence review wish-list of everything from ammo factories to autonomous weaponry was a reminder of how vital it is to sustain an innovative, well-capitalised, British-owned defence industry, rather than one that is picked off piece by piece by US and other foreign predators. And it's fair to say that the review's call for 'warfighting readiness' makes the sector a strong bet for investors anyway, with or without Isa tax benefits. Blue-chip defence stocks have already soared since the beginning of the year – BAE Systems up 68 per cent, Rolls-Royce 55 per cent – but may pause as the market discovers how much of the wish list the government actually commits to buying and to what extent UK firms are impeded (as President Emmanuel Macron of France has signalled) from supplying EU rearmament demand. In the meantime, smart stock-pickers will hunt for defence-related businesses that have yet to catch the upswing. Naturally on this theme I consult this column's veteran investor Robin Andrews, who suggests taking a look at 'engineering and electronics companies that are vital in the supply chain and whose customers are major defence companies and in some cases governments directly'. Here's his promising half-dozen: Melrose Industries in aerospace; Hunting in precision engineering; Filtronic, already a hot stock in telecom systems; and in various aspects of IT, Concurrent Technologies, EnSilica and the curiously named Raspberry Pi. As ever, we urge you to do your own research. City stampede Here we go again: three more tech companies abandoning London. Spectris, a listed precision instrument maker that descends from the Fairey seaplane company and might have featured in our roll call of defence-adjacent stocks above, is selling itself to the US private equity giant Advent for £3.7 billion. Alphawave, an Anglo-Canadian designer of 'high-speed connectivity solutions' that listed in London in 2021, has fallen to US microchip maker Qualcomm for £1.8 billion. Both deals are at huge premiums over the companies' last quoted share prices, reflecting the pattern of chronic undervaluation that has driven the decline of the London Stock Exchange and provoked a stampede of takeovers. Third to go this week is Wise, a money-transfer fintech founded in London by Estonian emigrés and now worth £11 billion, but moving its primary listing to New York. Time and again we're told City authorities, Treasury ministers and the Exchange itself are urgently pursuing reforms to make London's capital markets slicker and sexier; but so far, as the exodus accelerates, to no effect whatever. Top shopkeeper Last week, to some readers' irritation, I applauded a €100 million bonus for Michael O'Leary in his 31st year as the presiding genius of Ryanair. So if I'm in favour of high pay for high performance, logic might dictate that I should also favour the £7 million award to Stuart Machin for his third year's work as chief executive of Marks & Spencer. But I'm not so sure. The high street chain has certainly revived under Machin's leadership: profits are up, stores look fresher, the food offer outpaces rivals and the shares have risen 150 per cent since he took the helm in May 2022. And he's clearly not to blame for the cyber-attack that crippled M&S's website and cost the business £300 million. But nor is he a creator of the M&S brand: he's a hired hand (having previously worked for Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and in Australia) whose efforts have been closely mentored by his powerful chairman, Archie Norman. In that case, is it really fair to pay him 140 times the average store manager's salary? Then again, I hear you mutter, what's fairness got to do with it if £7 million is the going rate for global boardroom talent? Maybe, but it's a big number for running a shop and it puts Machin in a merciless media spotlight. Having said which, I'll pop out to buy my M&S picnic lunch.
