In a move set to delight frequent flyers, United Airlines flights will now feature select Apple TV+ shows at no additional cost, thanks to a new content partnership between the airline and the streaming platform. The collaboration brings acclaimed Apple Originals, including the hit sci-fi drama Severance, to the airline's in-flight entertainment system and mobile app.The agreement, announced on Tuesday, makes United the latest major US carrier to offer free Apple TV+ programming on board. Passengers travelling across United's domestic and international routes can now access the first seasons of several flagship series directly through the seatback screens or via the United mobile application, as per a report by 9to5 mac.United says more than 130,000 seatback screens across its fleet will carry the dedicated Apple TV+ channel. The offering comes at a time when airlines are looking to enhance in-flight entertainment experiences to cater to changing passenger expectations. At launch, passengers can enjoy the full first seasons of Severance, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses and Silo. The airline has confirmed that The Morning Show and Bad Sisters will be added to the line-up in September. While the catalogue is not exhaustive, the curated list represents some of Apple TV+'s most celebrated shows, with multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations between them. For viewers hoping to binge entire series during a long-haul flight, there is a caveat. The partnership currently offers only the first seasons of the selected shows. This means, for example, passengers can watch the entirety of Severance's debut season without charge, but will have to subscribe to Apple TV+ to continue the story in season two.Industry analysts suggest this strategy is designed to give flyers a 'taste' of Apple's programming, with the goal of converting them into paying subscribers once they are back on the ground.United has said the Apple TV+ channel will receive monthly updates, with additional titles and possibly new genres being introduced over time. Beyond episodic series, passengers can expect access to select documentaries and films from Apple's award-winning library. The airline estimates that more than 250 episodes, films, and specials will be made available through the arrangement. The partnership follows a similar long-running deal between Apple and American Airlines, which also offers select Apple TV+ content to its passengers. Other streaming platforms are also entering the aviation space, just a day earlier, Crunchyroll announced a tie-up with Delta Air Lines to bring anime content to its flights.Streaming content has become an increasingly competitive tool for airlines looking to differentiate their on-board experience. With high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi still inconsistent on many routes, preloaded premium content on seatback systems continues to be a draw for passengers.Launched in 2019, Apple TV+ charges subscribers USD 10 per month for ad-free access to its slate of original programming. The service has quickly gained a reputation for high production values and star-studded casts, with Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Severance earning particular acclaim. The availability of these shows on United Airlines flights effectively gives passengers a free trial experience during their journey. Analysts note that such collaborations benefit both parties, airlines can market enhanced passenger comfort, while streaming services gain a captive audience for their content.No. Currently, only the first season of Severance and other Apple TV+ shows is available. To view later seasons, passengers would need an Apple TV+ subscription.Yes. The Apple TV+ channel is accessible across United's fleet on more than 130,000 seatback screens and through the United mobile app, subject to aircraft and route availability.

Apple Cinemas says its branding is "clearly differentiated" from Apple in court fight

Apple Cinemas says it will defend its brand against a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Apple Inc. , stating the theater chain has operated independently for over a decade with "no connection" to the tech company. "We are committed to defending our brand, our history, and our continued right to operate as Apple Cinemas – an identity that is and has always been clearly distinct and fully compliant with all applicable trademark laws," the company said in a statement responding to Apple's legal action filed last Friday. Apple Inc. sued the theater chain and its owner Sand Media, alleging they "knowingly and intentionally" used the Apple name to create consumer confusion during an "aggressive nationwide expansion." The tech giant seeks monetary damages and an injunction to prevent the cinema company from using the Apple name. Theater chain claims geographic origins, denies brand confusion Apple Cinemas, which operates 14 locations primarily in the Northeast, maintains its name derives from geographic roots rather than any attempt to capitalise on Apple's brand recognition. According to MacRumors, the company says its name "reflects our roots, beginning with our first planned location at the Apple Valley Mall in New England," though no theater actually opened at that Rhode Island mall. The theater chain, founded in 2013, has grown into what it describes as a "top 25 movie theater chain " in the United States. Earlier this year, Apple Cinemas opened its first West Coast location in San Francisco, expanding beyond its traditional Northeast footprint. Apple Cinemas disputes claims of consumer confusion, asserting its "branding is clearly differentiated" from the iPhone maker. The company also contested Apple's characterization of failed negotiations, stating it has "responded reasonably and transparently to all legal communications regarding this matter." The US Patent and Trademark Office previously denied Apple Cinemas' attempts to trademark both the "Apple Cinemas" name and "Apple Cinemas Experience" in 2024, citing potential confusion with Apple's existing trademark rights. Apple Inc. has expanded into entertainment content through its Apple TV+ streaming service since 2019. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
