4 US cruise ship passengers accused of smuggling drugs and detained in Bermuda
Police said in a statement that the suspects had a 'significant quantity of illegal drugs' including cannabis and carfentanyl, which experts say is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and is used to tranquilize elephants.
'This seizure may have prevented a potential tragedy,' said acting Detective Superintendent Derricka Burns.
The suspects also were accused of possessing vape pens and suspected THC gummies.
Bermuda police said security officers aboard a Carnival cruise ship had detained the suspects. They were arrested upon their arrival to the wealthy British overseas territory located in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
Police did not provide additional details, and Carnival did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Two American Carnival Cruise Line passengers drowned in separate incidents in the Bahamas on Friday, according to officials. The victims were identified as a 74-year-old woman and a 79-year-old man. In a statement, Carnival said one victim drowned in a lagoon and the other drowned at the beach, both at Celebration Key, a private destination for Carnival guests on the south side of Grand Bahama. It includes a water park, a beach club, lagoons and restaurants. 'One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation,' the cruise line said in the statement. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance.' Police were notified about the first drowning just before noon, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. The officers found the 79-year-old man unresponsive aboard a commercial vessel. 'According to the initial report, the male became unresponsive while snorkeling at a beach,' police said in a statement shared with NBC News. 'A lifeguard assisted him from the water, and CPR was administered, but to no avail.' The man was pronounced dead by a doctor, police said. Shortly after 2:30 p.m., officers found an unresponsive 74-year-old woman aboard another commercial vessel, according to police. The woman became unresponsive while swimming in a pool, according to an initial report, police said. A lifeguard who assisted her out of the water administered CPR 'to no avail,' and she was pronounced dead. 'An autopsy will be performed on both victims to assist with determining the exact cause of death,' police said. 'The investigation continues in both matters.'

Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Jhayco arrested near West Miami on drug possession charges
Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Jhayco was arrested early Tuesday morning in Miami-Dade on drug possession charges. According to the arrest report, just before 3 a.m. a deputy spotted a red Corvette, driven by the 32-year-old rapper whose real name is Jesus Manuel Nieves Cortes, going 5 p.m. on SW 8 Street. As it approached SW 69 Avenue, the car came to a complete stop, the report said. After not moving for a minute, the report said the deputy activated their lights and siren, and initiated a traffic stop. The deputy wrote in the report that when approaching the car there was a strong smell of cannabis coming from it and the driver had white powder on his pants and on his nose. When asked if he had a driver's license, the deputy noted Jhayco first fumbled through his wallet and then looked through his cellphone. According to the report, the singer was then asked to step out of the vehicle. The deputy noted that a records check was unable to find a driver's license under his name. During a search of the car, deputies found two black pouches with approximately seven grams of suspected cannabis in each one, according to the sheriff's office. They also found, according to the report, three clear baggies with suspected cocaine totalling two grams. The singer was then taken into custody. He's been charged with cocaine possession and possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis. After releasing a number of singles and EPs, Jhayco's debut studio album Famouz was released in 2019. He's also had several collaborations with Bad Bunny, including "No Me Conoce - Remix" and "DÁKITI" which reached number one on the Billboard Global 200 charts and the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Former OSU quarterback Art Schlichter expected to plead guilty to cocaine charge
A former Ohio State University quarterback is expected to plead guilty to cocaine possession during an upcoming court hearing, his attorney has indicated. Art Schlichter, 65, appeared in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on July 31 for a status conference on his case. During that hearing, Schlichter's attorney indicated that Schlichter will enter a guilty plea at a future hearing. Schlichter is charged with one count of possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. His next hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11. The charge stems from a February 2024 traffic stop during which an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper found cocaine in Schlichter's vehicle. Video from the traffic stop shows Schlichter standing outside a disabled vehicle near East Hudson Street and Hamilton Avenue. The trooper approaches Schlichter, and while Schlichter is trying to call for a ride, the trooper spots what looks like drug paraphernalia in the car. The trooper found the cocaine during the search, court records say Schlichter pleaded guilty in 2022 to possession of cocaine and was on probation for that at the time of the traffic stop. Less than a year before that incident, Schlichter had been released from prison, where he served time for a ticket scheme that bilked victims out of millions of dollars. Schlichter played for Ohio State between 1978 and 1981 and for four seasons in the NFL.
