Beach Boys' Former Manager on Brian Wilson: ‘The Three Wilsons Are Finally Back Together'

Yahoo12-06-2025
Fred Vail, the former manager of the Beach Boys, spent a day in November with Brian Wilson at his home, giving him updates on Cows in the Pasture, the long-lost country album that Wilson produced with Vail on vocals. Vail, with producer Sam Parker, is gearing up to finally release Cows in the Pasture and had been collaborating with Wilson. On Wednesday, he was shocked to learn that his longtime friend had died. Wilson was 82.
'The three Wilsons are finally back together,' Vail, 81, tells Rolling Stone. Brian's bandmates and siblings in the Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson, died in 1983 and 1998, respectively.

'Sixty-two years, that's how long we were buddies,' Vail says of his relationship with the visionary songwriter and producer. 'Some great memories, some great moments. They all fly back at me: meeting them at the old house in Hawthorne; sitting on the floor at Capitol, when he mastered Pet Sounds; at Columbia, when we recorded 'Good Vibrations'; and then all the shows at the auditorium in Sacramento that I emceed.'
It's Vail's voice that introduces the Beach Boys' 1964 live album Beach Boys Concert — 'Now, from Hawthorne, California, to entertain you tonight with a gala concert and a recording session…the fabulous Beach Boys!' Recorded in 1963 at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California, the concert, which Vail promoted, landed him a job as the Beach Boys' manager, putting him front and center to witness key events in the group's history.
'I remember being with Brian the night that Kennedy was assassinated, when he and Mike [Love] wrote 'The Warmth of the Sun,'' Vail says.
'The world mourns a genius today, and we grieve for the loss of our cousin, our friend, and our partner in a great musical adventure,' the band wrote in a statement. 'Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of the Beach Boys — he was the soul of our sound. The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever. His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. Together, we gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom — music that made people feel good, made them believe in summer and endless possibilities.
'We are heartbroken by his passing,' the group continued. 'We will continue to cherish the timeless music we made together and the joy he brought to millions over the decades. And while we will miss him deeply, his legacy will live on through his songs and in our memories.'
When the childhood home of the Wilsons was designated a California landmark in 2004, Vail again emceed for his friend. 'When I introduced him, I said, 'If I was alive in the 1800s, I might have gotten a chance to work with Stephen Foster, and if I'd been alive in the first half of the 20th century, I might have gotten to work with Irving Berlin or Cole Porter,'' Vail says. 'But God had better things in store — I got to work with Brian Wilson.'
Parker, who first met Vail in 2014 and is spearheading the Cows in the Pasture album and accompanying film project, says the magic of Wilson's music was that it spoke to everyone. 'It spoke to Fred and I, and it brought Fred and I together through our love of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson,' Parker says. 'I'm eternally grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside Fred and Brian in completing this album that these two best friends started 55 years ago.'

Rock legend praises Bruce Springsteen for ‘not being afraid' to slam Trump on stage

Credence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty heaped praise on legendary musician Bruce Springsteen for calling out President Donald Trump in a Rolling Stone interview published Monday. Fogerty praised Springsteen for speaking out against Trump and defending his values. "I'm really proud of Bruce for just sticking up for his values and, and not being afraid to voice them," said the "Down on the Corner" singer. Springsteen has been a vocal critic of President Trump for almost a decade now. During his latest world tour, the "Born To Run" singer has incorporated a brief anti-Trump speech into his sets where he implores audiences to recognize the president as a threat to civilization that must be resisted. "In my home, the America I love, the America I've written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration," he said in between songs at his Manchester show in May. "Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experience to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring," he continued, elsewhere during the set adding, "There's some very weird, strange and dangerous s--- going on out there right now." Trump responded to Springsteen several days later in a post on his Truth Social platform. "I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States. Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country." Springsteen announced last year that he would be voting for former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential race. While speaking with Rolling Stone, Fogerty suggested that Trump made a mistake by going after Springsteen publicly, noting how President Richard Nixon chose not to publicly spar with his critics. "Even though they're very similar, President Nixon would've realized not to give the other side publicity by acknowledging and talking about it. 'Cause you just make it more famous when you do that," he said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This Scene From Weapons Has A Hidden Meaning

On Friday, the highly anticipated Zach Cregger horror-mystery, Weapons, officially released in theaters. Cregger is also known for the 2022 horror film, Barbarian. The Julia Garner and Josh Brolin-led film about 17 missing children, which made headlines for having a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and currently sits at 95%, topped the box office this weekend, beating out Freakier Friday. While the movie is a rollercoaster ride I will not totally spoil for you here (it is, in my opinion, best to go into this one as clueless as possible if you haven't seen it yet! But, there are mild spoilers ahead, so be warned!), there is one particular scene from the movie that's taken the Internet by storm. That scene is, of course, right before [redacted] shows up to Marcus's — the principal's — home. He and his husband are enjoying a quiet evening in, complete with a snack tray and a perhaps not-so-soothing documentary about cordyceps — a parasitic fungi. What really piqued people's interest here was the snack platter they'd concocted for themselves. The feast included seven hot dogs (mustard ONLY), a good helping of ruffled potato chips, four cookies, a bowl of baby carrots, and an absolutely diabolical (but appropriate, TBH) serving of accompanying ranch dressing. I won't lie to you — the second that came on screen, I turned to my girlfriend and mumbled something about how we should have that for dinner, actually, because it was a delightful, if not slightly unhinged, spread. Well, it seems like that scene stuck with a lot of people, actually: All jokes aside, while this shot certainly made our stomachs grumble and tugged at our heartstrings, some eagle-eyed fans have shared their own theory of why the capital-d delicious dinner spread is so notable, and I'm willing to bet that you — like me — totally missed it. Folks online have since pointed out that they think the seven hot dogs seem to be an homage to Cregger's late friend and collaborator, Trevor Moore, who died suddenly in 2021. Cregger spoke to Rolling Stone about how his grief and processing the loss of his best friend inspired the movie, saying, "I wanted to do something I found that as I kept writing, and the more I identified with all of the people I was writing about, the more this became something like an honest diary of my inner shit." He continued, sharing a conversation he had with fellow horror director Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) about being unsure of including "the personal stuff" in his work. "[Ari] was like, 'The personal stuff is what makes this work. Don't be ashamed of it!' Hearing him say that…it's part of the DNA of Weapons. The town is dealing with a loss. And so was I. It was the biggest direct hit I'd ever taken.' Did you get a chance to catch Weapons on its opening weekend? What'd you think? Did you catch Cregger's subtle, touching homage? Tom Cruise Rocks Out at Oasis Reunion Even Though the Gallaghers Don't Like His Movies

Tom Cruise popped up at one of Oasis' reunion gigs in London over the weekend, officially putting to rest any lingering rumors surrounding the incredibly low stakes and deep cut (certainly by Oasis' standards) beef between the actor and band. Cruise kept a relatively low profile at Oasis' July 25 gig at Wembley Stadium, but he was spotted by the DJ/producer Goldie, who happened to be sitting a few rows ahead of him. Cruise can be seen in the background of one video Goldie posted on social media, while the DJ also snapped a selfie with the movie star. More from Rolling Stone Noel and Liam Gallagher's Brother Charged With Rape Liam Gallagher Declares Oasis Concerts Safe for Cheaters: 'We Don't Have That Coldplay Camera' That Spicy Oasis Doc You Heard About? No Such Thing While it would obviously make sense for a gigantic movie star who largely resides in London to attend one of the biggest concert events of the year, Cruise and Oasis do have a prickly history, as NME notes. Back in Oasis' 2007 tour doc, Lord Don't Slow Me Down, there's a scene in which brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher find some rare common ground, which just so happens to be roasting Cruise. 'He's a little fucker, and he's not been in one good film in his entire career,' Noel declared. Liam then proclaimed that Cocktail was 'great,' then seemingly dismissed the (actually correct) opinions of others in the room who said Eyes Wide Shut was good, too. Liam then added, 'I hate Tom Cruise. Bastard. Him and [footballer] Michael Owen.' If these comments ever rankled Cruise, it seems like he's gotten past them, certainly for the good of Rock & Roll. Also, for what it's worth, there was a very classically vague tabloid report in 2009 suggesting that, a couple of years after Lord Don't Slow Me Down, Cruise and Liam 'made polite conversation' after running into each other at a Berlin hotel. Oasis have a few more shows left in London before continuing the U.K. and Ireland leg of their reunion tour. The run will touch down in North America later next month, with additional shows scheduled in Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and South America through November.
