You might be expecting me, a topical columnist, to give you, the schoolchildren of Ireland, a timely pep talk about the Leaving Cert exams you've just started, perhaps with a stirring tale from my own experience. Sadly, I can't do that because I never did the Leaving Cert.
I was raised in Derry, and thus the British school system, so I did A-levels. They are, I'm sure, similar enough to the Leaving Cert that much of my advice would still be relevant, but still different enough that it wouldn't really make much sense to apply them directly to the exams you're sitting now.
Such are the slightly odd contradictions of being raised in Northern Ireland and discovering, over many years, that many of the full-fat tropes of standard Irishness are not universally applied both sides of the border.
I should be clear up-front that I've never felt any neurosis about this. It would, I suppose, take a lot for someone named Séamas O'Reilly to gain a complex about being insufficiently Irish. Sometimes, however, these complexes are thrust in front of me.
Rarely, however, in London, where few locals know, or care, the difference between north and south. Here, it's mostly had a simplifying effect, where I might as well be from Tallaght, Togher, or Twomileborris, if they had any clue where those places were.
No, here it's my status as an undercover Brit that surprises people, and has even granted me the opportunity to shock unsuspecting Londoners with my deep knowledge of BBC radio comedy, or British cultural products of our shared yesteryear. More deliciously still, it's also allowed me to correct them when they've called me an immigrant, usually with the attendant undertone that I should complain less about my gracious hosts.
When, this week, the Telegraph printed a rabidly scaremongering report that 'White British people will be a minority in 40 years', they clarified this cohort as 'the white British share of the population — defined as people who do not have an immigrant parent'.
Leaving aside how garbled that formulation is — there are millions of non-white Brits who meet that definition perfectly — it carried with it a parallel consequence. I myself do not have an immigrant parent.
In fact, every single pale and freckled ancestor of mine since 1800, Irish farmers to a soul, was born and raised in something called the United Kingdom. This is true for a large number of Irish people in the North. And since the late Prince Philip was himself a Greek immigrant, it gives me great pleasure to point out that they'd settled on a definition of 'White British' which includes Gerry Adams but excludes King Charles III.
The only people who've ever questioned my Irishness — to my face — are other Irish people, admittedly rarely, and almost always in the form of gentle ribbing from the sort of pub comedians who call their straight-haired friend 'Curly'.
The type who're fond of hearing me say 'Derry' and asking, reflexively, whether I mean 'Londonderry'. In the time-honoured tradition of any Derry person who's encountered this comment — oh, five or six million times in their life — I simply laugh it off and say I've heard that one before.
Similarly, if some irrepressible wit asks a Derry person whether we're in the IRA, we'll tell them that's quite an offensive stereotype, while also peppering the rest of our conversation with vague, disconcerting comments designed to imply that we might indeed be members of a paramilitary organisation and that they should, therefore, stop talking to us.
For the most part, I regard my British birth certificate and UK-system schooling as a mundane quirk of my fascinating personal biography. I am, in fact, confident enough in my identity that tabulating concrete differences between the North and South has simply become something of a hobby.
The Leaving Cert is one such mystery. I gather that it involves every student in Ireland taking tests in about 760 subjects, crammed into the same time I was given to learn four.
And that you must take Irish throughout the entirety of your schooling, so that you can emerge from 13 straight years of daily instruction in the language, cursing the fact you never got a chance to learn it.
I know, vaguely, that some part of this learning involves a book about — by? — a woman named Peig, and that the very mention of her name inspires tens of thousands of Irish people my age to speak in tones of awe, nostalgia, mockery and reverence, always in English.
Of course, almost all facets of the Irish school system are exotic to me. I feel that no finer term has ever been coined for small children than 'senior infants' but I've no idea what age it could possibly apply to.
I know that there is such a thing as a transition year, but not what that means, precisely, still less what it's for. I know that summer holidays are different, namely that they're longer than what we get up North.
I primarily know this because I grew up on the border and suffered the cruel indignity of marching off to school each June, in full sight of my friends eight feet away in Donegal, who seemed to have summer holidays that lasted about eight months of the year.
I was told, perhaps erroneously, that this period of glorious leisure stems from the days when kids were expected to be at home on the farm, and the school calendar augmented so as to enable the nation-sustaining pyramid of child labour this demanded. I saw no sign of this in the few kids I'd spy from the bus window as I was conveyed to class, idling on deck chairs and inflating beach balls in the driving rain.
Know that you have this glorious reward in your near future, if you're worried about the exams you've just begun. I hope the few you've started have already gone well. Take solace. Be unafraid. By my count, there's just 740 more to go.

McKee was at his desk as governor of the Maze Prison on December 27, 1997, the day the INLA claimed their biggest scalp of the Troubles. It was the final weeks and months of negotiations that would lead to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and Wright was seen as one of the remaining obstacles to a settlement. Vehemently opposed to the peace process, he stayed at the head of his LVF sectarian killing machine despite being behind bars, orchestrating and ordering attacks with the help of his trusted second in command, Mark 'Swinger' Fulton. William McKee News in 90 Seconds - 7th June So when Christopher 'Crip' McWilliams, John Kenneway and John 'Sonny' Glennon intercepted Wright as he made his way from his cell in the Maze to a visit from his girlfriend, they removed one of the biggest obstacles to peace. Armed with a pistol smuggled into what was supposed to be the most secure prison in Europe, the trio climbed over the prison roof and shot him inside the prison transport van. In October 1998 they were convicted of murder and possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life. They were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and 20 years on the firearms offence. Within two years they were free men, under the terms of the peace accord. It was a day that was to leave a permanent scar on the mind and soul of McKee. As the man in charge, he found himself thrust into the spotlight. He was to discover he may have been an unwitting pawn in a bigger game, played out by MI5 in collusion with the INLA. Collusion Inside The Maze is the title of McKee's newly published book, a novel that teases out the conspiracy theories that still surround the death of one of the most notorious and dangerous killers in the history of the conflict. 'It's a 'what if' book,' McKee told the Sunday World. 'I have to be careful, I'm still covered by the Official Secrets Act — as far as the facts are concerned, I can only stick to what is in the public domain, but what happened has never sat well with me. There are too many coincidences and unanswered questions.' Billy Wright He said his decision to address those questions in the form of a novel is an attempt to highlight certain issues, including the role of the security services and why he as governor was never informed of intelligence that pointed to a planned attack on Wright. 'What is fact is that during a bugged INLA meeting on the Antrim Road, a plan to assassinate 'King Rat' Wright was discussed. That meeting was 12 days before Wright was killed. 'When Wright was transferred from Maghaberry, so were Glennon and McWilliams. I was never told that there was clear intelligence Wright was going to be killed. Did they just let it happen? 'It has festered with me for a long time. Wright was a very bad man — he had been linked to 20 sectarian murders — but even given that, he should have been moved out of the Maze.' Republicans were threatening to take retaliatory action against Wright's LVF, which would have put the entire peace process at the risk of collapse. McKee said he was in his office when he got the call that there had been a shooting in H Block 6. 'You just know what to do, it's not a question of 'oh my God what next?' Your training takes over — you know what to do. 'People always asked me to tell the true story, but I don't know what the true story is, so I decided to write a thriller that was loosely based on the murder, giving possibilities that may account for state collusion,' he said. 'I used Billy Wright's name but, under the Official Secrets Act, I couldn't use anything that was not in the public domain. 'The killing of Wright is a significant part of the book, but there are other incidents as well, including ones connected to the IRA's Nutting Squad, Stakeknife and the Disappeared.' He said he has shared the book with a number of former combatants who have given it their seal of approval on what was a decisive moment in our history. 'One combatant told me, 'Mate, that's not a novel, that's a true story'. I hope it goes some way to shedding some light on what may or may not have happened.' Billy McKee joined the Prison Service as a 22-year-old never intending it to be his career, but he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually finding himself governor at Maghaberry and the Maze. At the height of the Troubles the job was fraught with risk. He had to move house three times at short notice because of death threats. 'I'd get a call in the middle of the night from the security services telling me, 'Get out of the house now, they're on their way to kill you'. The police couldn't come in case it compromised an informant or agent. The government would move us to another house until it happened again.' The pressure was too much for his marriage, which collapsed. His mental health suffered. He recalls leaving Maghaberry in the back of an ambulance believing he had suffered a heart attack. It wasn't but it was a panic attack brought on by the pressures of dealing with a failing marriage, death threats and being head of one of the most notorious prisons in Europe. After a near 30-year career in the Prison Service, he retired on medical grounds but to this day struggles with PTSD. 'I've had 66 counselling sessions learning to live with what I call my 'black cloud' — some days it's there some days it's not. When I was in the Prison Service I was known as Billy, since I left I introduce myself as William, I'm trying to leave that person behind. 'Revisiting the Wright murder has been cathartic because as I've said the circumstances have festered with me for years.' These days William spends much of his time talking to youth groups and often to former combatants. 'It helps me, but I also think it helps young people and even those who went through it all in this country to listen to someone who stared it in the face.'

Thousands attend pro-Palestine and anti-immigration rallies in Cork

A major policing operation was in place in Cork City this afternoon as thousands of people marched in two separate rallies. Dozens of uniformed gardaí, backed up by dozens of members of the Garda Public Order Unit — all deployed in soft cap mode — and members of the Garda Mounted Unit were on duty on the Grand Parade in Cork. Thousands gathered in one area for a Munster-wide pro-Palestine march, and nearby for what was billed as a "national protest for Ireland," organised by anti-immigration campaigners. Several prominent far-right agitators were involved in that event, including former Ireland First leader Derek Blighe. Hermann Kelly of the Irish Freedom Party was among those attending. Picture: Larry Cummins Rebel News, a Canadian-based far-right online news website, had a reporter on the ground covering what it described as a rally of Irish patriots opposed to the Government's mass immigration policies. Crowd control barriers were in place to keep both sides apart. The Garda Air Unit patrolled the skies above, and with road closures and diversions in place, there was widespread disruption to public transport timetables. Picture: Larry Cummins The pro-Palestinian campaigners were marshalled in one direction — down St Patrick's Street, onto Oliver Plunkett Street, and back to the Grand Parade for speeches and music — while the anti-immigration protest marched in the other direction, down the South Mall at around the same time, to gather on MacSwiney Quay outside City Hall for speeches. Gardaí have not given out official crowd estimates, but organisers of the pro-Palestine march, the Cork Palestine Solidarity Campaign — who record attendance at their weekly rallies — have put their numbers at just over 4,500 people. They heard calls on the Irish Government to place sanctions on Israel, pass the Occupied Territories Bill, and stop the Central Bank of Ireland from authorising the sale of Israeli bonds in Europe. Picture Larry Cummins Naser Swirki, a theatre and film director who was born in Gaza and now lives in Skibbereen spoke of the horror that Israel is inflicting on people who are trying to survive in his country. 'In Gaza, death spares no one — doctors, children, the displaced, and even hope itself,' he said. 'In Gaza, instead of saying, "See you tomorrow," they say, "See you in heaven." 'Parents memorise their children's clothes to identify their remains later. 'They struggle to get a piece of bread, offering it before bed, so their children don't die while they're still hungry.' It is estimated that around 3,000 people marched in the 'national protest for Ireland' rally, with many carrying tricolours. They heard speakers criticising government immigration and housing policy. Mr Blighe also addressed the Irish diaspora and said Irish nationalists want to give them a 'homeland to return to.' The problem with Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein wanting to 'put manners' on media

Gerry Adams has always denied being a member of the IRA. There, that's that out of the way. These days it's good practice to get your disclaimer in early. Especially if you're in the journalism business. Anything else could be construed as bad manners. And 'manners' is what Gerry's €3 million libel battle with the BBC all boiled down to in his own words. The case he took in the Dublin High Court 'was about putting manners on the British Broadcasting Corporation' he announced minutes after a jury awarded him €100,000 in damages. They had agreed that a Spotlight programme had defamed Gerry by alleging he sanctioned the murder of IRA spy Denis Donaldson in 2006, eight years after the Good Friday Agreement had sealed his place among the peacemakers. Gerry's grandiose reaction to the decision was described as 'chilling' by the National Union of Journalists. For a man who has dealt in secrets during a lifetime of politics, it was certainly candid. This was Gerry saying the quiet part out loud. Because as long as the press has been around, there have been those in political power who fantasise about 'putting manners' on it. Not least the many other members of Sinn Fein who have taken libel actions against the Irish media in recent times, as they are of course entitled to do. They would also be entitled to ask the Press Ombudsman to adjudicate their grievances instead. It's a process that exists to put manners on journalists without damages or the €3 million tab for lawyers' fees. Weeks before Gerry's big win at the High Court, Sinn Fein TDs also voted in the Dail against the reform of Ireland's defamation laws. Their biggest issue was getting rid of juries like the one that gave Gerry a hundred grand last week. They take the view that a group of lay citizens are best qualified to stand judgement on that most precious of things to the Irish – our reputation. Over the years juries have deemed it to be vastly more valuable in compensation terms than literally losing life or limb. Sinn Fein believes that people should be summoned from their day jobs as butchers, bakers and candlestick makers, and asked to rule on this wickedly complex area of civil law that divides and defies legal experts. And be relied upon to not lose the run of themselves when awarding damages. I've been in the high court before when juries were asked not to lose the run of themselves. When advised to use the yardstick of a family holiday or a small car to assess damages, they have returned with eye watering six-figures sums. That's quite the family vacation. But there is a bigger problem I have with Gerry's swagger at sticking it to the BBC and Sinn Fein's general animosity towards the media. 'Putting manners' on the press has become a dark obsession among others who view journalists as 'the enemy of the people'. And they are willing to use far less legitimate methods than a high court jury to do it. Last year was the deadliest on record for media workers around the world with over 200 reporters killed, the vast majority in Gaza where the press have become legitimate targets. In the world's biggest democracy, the American media is bearing the brunt of an authoritarian crackdown. Respected outlets are banned for refusing to report a warped view of reality sanctioned by the ruling regime. Handpicked lackies and sycophants are favoured to replace experienced reporters because they ask the right questions. Amnesty international this week named Northern Ireland – where Sinn Fein leads the Government - as one of the most intimidating places to be a reporter because of threats from crime gangs. Meanwhile hatemongers attack and intimidate journalists 24 hours a day in the unpoliced laneways of cyber space where they replace news and facts with their own disinformation and conspiracies. Against that climate, we need political leaders to choose their words and actions carefully when they have a beef with the media. Politicians whose first instinct is not to join in the 'let's put manners on them' pile-on. And who remember there are alternatives to multi-million libel lotteries before you march to the High Court behind the battle cry: Tiocfaidh ár Law!
