'This is Chelsea Mason': Mount hailed by TNT pundits after his superb late double booked Man United's Europa League final spot - as Paul Scholes insists he 'looks perfect' for Ruben Amorim's system

Daily Mail08-05-2025

was hailed by pundits after his remarkable late double sealed Manchester United 's place in the Europa League final.
A 4-1 win against Athletic Bilbao means United will face Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Bodø/Glimt, in the Europa League final on May 21 with both sides desperate to secure silverware and boost deeply disappointing Premier League campaigns.
Mount scored his first goals at Old Trafford since moving to United in a £55million move in 2023 in front of a rapturous Stretford End.
The English midfielder had only been played 10 minutes when he turned on Leny Yoro 's pass before rifling the ball into the far right corner.
Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund then put the Red Devils 3-1 up on the night when the 26-year-old floated the ball into the an empty net from 45 yards out.
Pundits were full of praise for Mount, who has been beset by injury troubles in recent seasons, post-match.
Robbie Savage said: 'I think it has been the best 30 minutes of his career. What a performance from Mason Mount.
'The first goal is brilliant, the second magnificent. I said shoot, you could see the goalkeeper, the touch is brilliant but he drives it with his left, that in unbelievable.
'We have seen Wayne Rooney do it – the best 30 minutes possibly of his life. The best half an hour on a football pitch.'
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves added: 'This is Chelsea Mason in terms of smart. That is Mason in a position he is comfortable in and he is a great finsher but if he is fit and healthy he can do it.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes also heaped praise on the former Chelsea man.
'He will have a lot to offer if he is, that is the big issue, but get him up to speed and in this system too he looks perfect for one of the no 10 positions from now until the end of the season and kick on, they have a really good player.'
Ruben Amorim's side sit in 15th place, two points ahead of West Ham in 17th, in the league with just 3 games remaining.
However, a victory against Spurs will seal Champions League qualification and see Amorim picking up European silverware in his maiden season.
The United boss lavished praise on Mount after his brace.
'It is important for every player, when you see that kind of guy working hard every day, eating well, resting, ice bath, when you have these kind of players you just want to help them and he can run like a winger and play with his back to goal,' he said.
Meanwhile, Mount said: 'It has been difficult since I have been here with injuries and setbacks and I knew something good was going to come and tonight it has paid off. It was a brilliant performance, we knew they would attack us but to get the first goal calmed us down.
'It has been too long but I carried on going working hard in training every day and tried to stay positive, when I have the opportunity to come on I try and come on and calm the game down and have an impact
'As I saw him come out I was in front of my midfielder I had in my head first touch and shoot, I didn't mean for it to go on my left but I saw the defender was away so to get it on target really. The first one was instinct.
'The crowd has been unbelievable, they have stuck with us, my first goals here so a special night, one I have waited for a a long time and to go back to Bilbao is special.'

Sir Dave Brailsford set for reduced role at Manchester United after reshuffle

Brailsford has played a major part since Ratcliffe secured his stake in United in February 2024, stepping down as team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers cycling team to take charge of footballing operations at Old Trafford and investing considerable time and energy in driving change at the club. But after a season in which United finished 15th, their worst Premier League finish, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, Ratcliffe is planning a shake-up which will see Brailsford return to his role as director of sport for the wider Ineos group, as first reported by The Times. Under the plans, Jason Wilcox – currently United's technical director – will reportedly be named director of football, and former Tour de France winner and Olympic champion Geraint Thomas is set to take on a leadership role with the Grenadiers when he retires as a rider at the end of the year. Brailsford, 61, has overseen a major overhaul of United's operations, including a £50million redevelopment of the Carrington training ground. Ratcliffe has scaled back some of Ineos's sporting commitments, terminating its sponsorship of the New Zealand rugby team and ending his bid to win the America's Cup. However, Ratcliffe remains committed to the cycling team, who no longer hold the dominant position they did when winning the Tour de France in seven out of eight editions between 2012 and 2019. Thomas, 39, has said he will retire after the Tour of Britain in September.

From pitch invader scuffle to matchwinner – Cristiano Ronaldo stars for Portugal

The hosts had gone in front early in the second half when Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz headed home but Roberto Martinez's men hit back with two goals in five minutes. A brilliant strike from Francisco Conceicao, whose father Sergio scored the last time Portugal beat Germany in Euro 2000, brought them level before Ronaldo bagged his 137th international goal with an easy tap-in to win the match. A fan confronted Ronaldo before kick-off (Martin Meissner/AP) It sent Portugal through to the final where they will meet either Spain or France on Sunday. There was plenty of drama in the warm-up as midway through an electrical storm, Ronaldo had his confrontation, with the young fan dragged away by stewards. The storm caused a 10-minute delay to kick-off, but once the action got under way it was almost an electric start for the hosts as they started on the front foot with Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa making two great saves. First he produced a fine stop to deny debutant Nick Woltemade's fizzed effort before getting down quickly to turn Leon Goretzka's stroked effort around the post. Portugal were inches away from taking the lead early in the second half as Ronaldo was just unable to connect with Nuno Mendes' incisive cross, which agonisingly grazed the striker's studs. And soon after the ball went in at the other end as Germany took the lead in the 48th minute. Joshua Kimmich, winning his 100th cap, made it, clipping a delightful ball over the defence for Wirtz to run on to and find the bottom corner. Portugal's response was good and Bruno Fernandes, fresh from a post-season tour to Asia with Manchester United, whipped an effort just wide. But it was substitute Conceicao who made the difference five minutes after coming off the bench. It was a brilliant individual goal, cutting in from the right, driving towards goal before finding the bottom corner with a 25-yard curling effort. The turnaround was complete five minutes later after another fine goal. Mendes played a one-two with Fernandes and then laid it on a plate for Ronaldo to tap into an empty net after just staying onside. Conceicao could have killed the match but whistled an effort just wide and Germany almost equalised moments later as Karim Adeyemi advanced into the box but his shot hit the outside of the post. Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a miraculous double save to deny Diogo Jota and Conceicao at the death, but Portugal's work was done.
