Canada's Jack Crawford wins silver in World Cup super-G at Kvitfjell
Canadian alpine skier Jack Crawford claimed silver on Sunday in a tight men's super-G race at the World Cup stop at in Kvitfjell, Norway.
The 27-year-old from Toronto finished just 0.38 seconds behind Italian star Dominik Paris, who made it two wins in three days.
Paris was the only racer to break clear on a course shortened by fog on the mountain, adding to his downhill victory Friday.
Take Paris out of Sunday's race and the top 25 all would have been within one second of Crawford, the 2023 world champion.
Miha Hrobat finished 0.47 seconds behind Paris for bronze.
Marco Odermatt placed fourth though his season-long super-G title was confirmed in midweek when his closest challenger, Paris's teammate Mattia Casse, was injured crashing in a training run for the downhill.
Paris, the German-speaking Italian with the French-sounding family name, is most at home on the Norwegian slope that staged the 1994 Olympics races.
He had one World Cup race victory in three years before Friday's downhill win.
He now has six of his 24 career World Cup wins at Kvitfjell, where he also completed a weekend double in downhill and super-G in 2019, and won a downhill in March 2022.
That had been a career season for Paris six years ago. He won a career-best seven World Cup races, plus his only gold medal — in super-G at the 2019 worlds — and his only World Cup crystal trophy, for the season-long super-G title. That success all came after spending the summer recording an album as a singer in a heavy metal band, Rise of Voltage.
Odermatt earned 50 race points Sunday and has an unbeatable lead of 210 in the super-G standings before the last race March 23 at Sun Valley, Idaho. It is his third straight super-G title.
The Swiss superstar's fourth straight overall World Cup title also is assured with a 570-point lead over Henrik Kristoffersen and just six races left. Though 600 points can be won, Kristoffersen does not race in downhill or super-G.
Kristoffersen will be favored to pick up points next weekend when the men's World Cup circuit stays in Norway for a giant slalom and slalom at nearby Hafjell.

Just weeks after winning the Champions League for the first time in its history, Paris Saint-Germain's eyes are now fixed on FIFA's shiny new Club World Cup. The newly-crowned European champion can add the world title to a trophy haul that also included a French league and cup double this season. 'We want to finish the season in style with the cherry on the cake,' coach Luis Enrique said. PSG had already qualified for the rebooted Club World Cup in the United States, but its Champions League triumph may still have come as a relief to FIFA. That's because, while the winner of the bumper tournament will officially be crowned the best club soccer team in the world, there are some notable absentees from the 32-team roster. Some big names are missing The Club World Cup will be without the champion of the most popular league in the world — the Premier League — given Liverpool's failure to meet the qualifying criteria. The same goes for Barcelona and Napoli — champions of Spain and Italy, respectively. No place either for current Asian champion Al-Ahli from Saudi Arabia or Pyramids — the African champion from Egypt. FIFA likely breathed a sigh of relief then when PSG and Inter Milan advanced to the final of the Champions League, with both teams having already secured their place at the Club World Cup via ranking points for recent runs in Europe's top club competition. Had either of the losing semifinalists — Barcelona or Arsenal — gone on to lift the trophy, then the flagship new tournament would have been without the reigning champion of Europe as well. The qualifying criteria were based on winners of continental trophies in the four years prior to the tournament, but not including the season directly before it. That's why Chelsea — Champions League winner in 2021 — has a seat at the table despite finishing fourth in the Premier League last month. Chelsea is arriving at the Club World Cup with a new team, coach and even owners since it won the Champions League four years ago. The club is one of 12 from Europe, including stellar names like Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter and Juventus. South American clubs are Europe's top rivals Some of Latin America's biggest teams are in the tournament — including reigning Copa Libertadores champion Botafogo from Brazil. Three other Brazilian teams have qualified: Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense. Argentina's famous rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors will also be there — and are expected to be backed by thousands of fans traveling to the U.S. It is the Latin American contingent that likely will likely present the biggest challenge to the European teams. This is the type of match that would have been the final in the tournament's previous guise — the best of Europe vs. the best of Latin America. Canadian teen Summer McIntosh shatters third world swim record in five days
VICTORIA, Canada (AP) — Canadian teen Summer McIntosh has done it again. The 18-year-old made it three world records in less than a week when she broke her own 400-meter individual medley mark on Wednesday night. McIntosh won at the Canadian swimming trials in 4 minutes, 23.65 seconds to lower her previous best in one of the sport's toughest events by 0.73 seconds. Her closest rival was 12 seconds behind. 'What a week Victoria! Had so much fun in the pool this week,' McIntosh wrote on Instagram. McIntosh had already broken the world best mark in the 200 individual medley on Monday in 2:05.70, two days after shaving more than a second off the 400 freestyle record, completing the race in 3:54.18. The Toronto native also set new Canadian marks in two other events: The 200 butterfly, where she was less than half a second off a record that has stood since 2009, and the 800 freestyle, where she was also just off Katie Ledecky's world record set last month. She is scheduled to compete in those five events at the world aquatics championships in Singapore next month. McIntosh won three gold medals at the Paris Olympics last year, winning her three individual events of the 400 and 200 individual medleys and the 200 butterfly. Italian rally driver Matteo Doretto dies aged 21 after crash in testing in Poland
ROME (AP) — Italian rally driver Matteo Doretto has died in an accident while testing his car in Poland, the European Rally Championship says. Doretto was conducting a private test session on Wednesday morning for the upcoming Rally Poland 'when he lost his life in an accident,' the ERC said in a statement late Wednesday. It added that co-driver Samuele Pellegrino was unhurt. The Automobile Club of Italy said Doretto hit a tree while testing his Peugeot 208 car in northeastern Poland. The 21-year-old Doretto was the Italian junior champion last year and was in his first season in the ERC. He was fourth in the junior standings.
