Mizoram hosts NSS fest to foster community service among youths
1 2 3 4 Aizawl: Mizoram sports and youth services minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Wednesday inaugurated the North East National Service Scheme (NSS) Festival 2025 at the Art & Culture Auditorium, Berawtlang. The event, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday, is jointly organised by the State NSS Cell under the department of sports and youth services, Mizoram, and the Regional Directorate of NSS under the ministry of youth affairs and sports. In his inaugural address, Hmar highlighted the importance of NSS in instilling civic responsibility and community awareness among youths. He also commended the contributions of NSS volunteers, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as their ongoing involvement in plantation drives and cleanliness campaigns. Hmar further encouraged volunteers from the northeast to learn from each other's cultures and histories, emphasising that their participation in NSS is a response to the nation's call for nation-building. D Carthigueane, regional director of NSS (NER), Guwahati, provided an overview of the festival. He noted that NSS is one of the largest student movements in the country, with nearly 40 lakh volunteers and an expected increase to 65 lakh. He also said the northeast is the only region to host a dedicated NSS festival, urging participants to view this event as a valuable opportunity for mutual learning. The festival is being attended by around 250 NSS volunteers and programme officers from Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Meghalaya.

Explained: Why Taking Leaves In CBSE Schools Won't Be Easy Anymore
Taking casual leaves from school is not going to be easy anymore. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a fresh notice directing the heads of affiliated schools to implement the 75 per cent attendance policy. It has been made mandatory for students, parents, and schools to strictly follow the attendance and leave guidelines. The notice, available on the board's official website, outlines key rules that all stakeholders must adhere to. What Does the Rule Say? The board has reiterated its long-standing rule: students of Classes 10 and 12 must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible for board examinations. This is mandated under Rules 13 and 14 of CBSE Examination Bye-Laws. The board allows a relaxation of up to 25% in specific cases, such as medical emergencies, but only when supported by valid documentation. These Are The Key Guidelines: Mandatory Information for Students and Parents Schools are now required to clearly inform all students and parents about the 75 per cent attendance rule and the consequences of not meeting it. Leave Application Process In case of medical emergencies, students must submit valid medical documents along with a leave application immediately after returning to school. For other types of leave, prior intimation with a valid reason must be given in writing. Absences without approved leave records may lead CBSE to treat the student as a non-regular or "dummy candidate," making them ineligible for board exams. Regular Attendance Monitoring Schools must maintain up-to-date attendance records for each student. These registers should be updated daily and duly signed by the class teacher and relevant school authority. Parental Communication If a student is frequently absent or fails to meet the attendance requirement, schools must inform the parents in writing. This communication should be sent via registered post, speed post, or email and documented for future reference. Surprise CBSE Inspections CBSE may conduct surprise inspections to verify attendance records. In case of discrepancies or if students found not attending classes regularly, the board may take strict action. This could include cancellation of school affiliation or disqualification of students from appearing in board exams.

CO2 emissions to rise 28% by 2054 in Nagpur: Report
1 2 Nagpur: Nagpur's daily carbon dioxide emissions are projected to rise by nearly 28% in the next three decades, warns the draft comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) prepared by RITES and MahaMetro. The projected rise in emissions is attributed to a surge in private vehicles and declining use of public transport, walking, and non-motorised transport (NMT) in the city. Soon-to-be implemented across the city, CMP flags severe environmental consequences if integration of walkable infrastructure, public transport services, and non-motorised mobility remains neglected. The report estimates that the city's current CO2 emissions of 1,311 tonne per day could increase to 1,678 tonne per day by 2054 if present travel patterns continue. Of this, two-wheelers are expected to remain the single largest contributors, emitting over 6.5 lakh kg CO2 daily by 2054. The CMP based its findings on fuel consumption patterns and vehicle categories using 2024 as the base year. Four-wheelers, with a combination of petrol, diesel, gas, and electric usage, are projected to contribute over 5.4 lakh kg, while buses — primarily through electricity usage — would account for nearly 2 lakh kg of CO2 each day. The report also draws attention to the city's declining air quality over the past five years. Citing Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the CMP notes that Nagpur's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 100.6 in 2019, dropped to 73.2 in 2020 during the Covid lockdown phase, but steadily increased to 130.1 in 2023. The year-on-year rise in AQI is seen as a reflection of increasing pollution levels tied directly to the growing number of vehicles and the resumption of industrial activities post-pandemic. While the report does not mention that degradation is inevitable, the CMP positions itself as a strategic strategy to guide long-term planning decisions that align with the city's growth and sustainability goals. Prepared jointly by RITES and MahaMetro, the plan calls for immediate and focused efforts to reverse the trend. It recommends transitioning to a sustainable urban transport (SUT) model, which integrates clean energy mobility options, efficient public transportation systems, improved urban structure, and advanced vehicular technologies. The goal is not only to cut emissions but also to improve quality of life and ensure climate resilience.
