Processions, cultural programmes mark Basava Jayanti in several districts
Festive spirit pervaded the districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Uttara Kannada and Davangere on Wednesday as hundreds of people took out processions and paid floral tributes to 12th century social reformer Basavanna (Basaveshwara) who strived for creation of an egalitarian society on his birth anniversary.
While it was common sight to see a beeline of political leaders, officials and office-bearers of various organisations in front of the statues of the social reformer installed at junctions across the districts of North Karnataka to pay floral tributes, a majority of the Basava Kendras that are involved in propagation of Basava ideology took out processions carrying bundles of Vachanas overhead along with the portraits of Basaveshwara mounted on embellished vehicles.
Various groups under the aegis of different organisations engaged in spreading the message of Basaveshwara, apart from Dalit organisations, organised various programmes to mark the birth anniversary of the saint-poet who is considered by many as the founder of Lingayat dharma.
Vachana recitation, discourses on Vachanas were held as part of the celebrations.
For the Basava Kendras it was a festival and several of them organised week-long programmes to mark the occasion. In the run-up to Basava Jayanti, the Basava Kendra on Gokul Road in Hubballi organised a 10-day programme with discourses on various Sharanas who were contemporary of Basavanna (Basaveshwara).
As work on elevated road at Kittur Chennamma Circle is under progress, the procession in Hubballi was shifted to Rayanala where the Basava Kendra is located. During the procession, the portrait of Basavanna and a mural of him was taken out from Arjun Vihar Cross. And, after covering the streets of Lohiya Nagar and Murarji Nagar, the procession concluded at Basava Samskruti School, where Basava Jayanti programme was organised. Along the route, scores of women from various Mahila Mandals sang the Vachanas in chorus.
Indira Glass House in Hubballi witnessed a steady flow of visitors who came to garland the equestrian statue of Basavanna and similar was the scene at Jubilee Circle in Dharwad, where the equestrian statue of Basaveshwara is installed.
The district administration in Dharwad organised a colourful procession to mark the occasion and an official programme was held in the evening in which Ministers took part.
In colleges, government offices and other places, Basava Jayanti was celebrated by offering floral tributes to Basavanna and conducting talks on his life and contribution and the social revolution he initiated during the 12th Century.
In all the districts of the region, official Basava Jayanti programmes were held at government offices and cultural programmes were organised at district and taluk centres. Motorcycle rallies by young motorcyclists with flags having the portrait of Basaveshwara tied to their handlebars was a common sight in all these districts.

Footpath, trees near Dalit Prerna Sthal won't be harmed for e-way widening: Noida
Noida: Noida Authority clarified on Sunday that the footpath and trees along a 600-metre long and 5.5-metre wide stretch near Dalit Prerna Sthal will not be damaged during an upcoming project. This comes a day after TOI reported that Authority plans to widen Noida Expressway from Sector 95 to DND Flyway loop by adding the 600-metre long and 5.5m wide stretch. Noida Authority is yet to issue a tender to hire a contractor for this project. In a press note issued on Saturday, the Authority initially said that a consultant hired to explore options for widening the expressway recommended removing a one-metre-wide roadside track, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath and a 3.1-metre-wide paved tiled surface to expand the carriageway by 5.5 metres. Noida's clarification came after concerns were raised on social media platform X, with users questioning the widening of the road and expressing fears about possible damage to greenery and pedestrian pathways. Noida Authority deputy general manager (Civil) Vijay Rawal said that while some trees stand on the left side of the expressway and a footpath runs between the expressway and the Sthal, both will remain intact. "The trees and footpath will not be harmed. On the left side of the footpath, there are tiles which will be removed to make way for the project," Rawal explained. There are nearly 40-50 fully grown trees along the way. The footpath is also used by a number of visitors to Dalit Prerna Sthal who come to see the memorial and also to observe the birthday celebrations of Dr BR Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram, Mayawati and other Dalit stalwarts. Nearly 1,000 people visit Dalit Prerna Sthal on a normal day, while the numbers increase to 10,000 on the birthday celebrations of stalwarts. "What is the need for this widening and how many trees will be cut? If the pavement is damaged, how will commuters and visitors to the Sthal navigate?" asked Brajesh Sharma, a resident of Sector 78, in an X post. Another commuter said that the traffic pressure has immensely increased, leading to a choke point near the DND Flyway loop during peak hours. "The road widening is important, but that should not be conducted by harming the trees," he said. Nearly five lakh vehicles use the Noida Expressway daily, with around two lakh entering the city via the DND Flyway and another one lakh each from Kalindi Kunj, Chilla Border and Noida's internal sectors.

15 sent to jail for imposing social boycott on Dalit family
1 2 3 Hyderabad: A special court in Nizamabad on Tuesday sentenced 15 individuals to imprisonment in connection with a social boycott imposed on a Dalit family by members of a so-called village development committee (VDC) in Kolipaka village of Jakranpally mandal. The special judge for SCs/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act cases and II additional district and sessions judge pronounced the verdict, convicting eight individuals to five years in jail with a fine of ₹5,200 each, while seven others received three years' imprisonment along with a fine of ₹4,200 each. It was in April 2020, when Errolla Hanumandlu and his family lodged a complaint with the Jakranpally police, alleging that the VDC had issued a social boycott order against them. It all began when Mekala Bablu and his family objected to Hanumandlu's family using a tractor in front of their house. Bablu later took the matter to the VDC, which demanded a monetary fine from Hanumandlu. When the family refused to pay, the VDC allegedly enforced a social boycott. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case under section 3(1)(zc) of the SCs/STs Act, various sections of the Indian Penal Code (341, 323, 290, 506, 248 r/w 34), and section 4 of the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955. Those who were sentenced to five years' imprisonment include Golla Boddu Thirupathi, Ravutla Bakkanna, Papai Gangadhar, Boddu Naveen, Kalakadi Muthenna, Bolli Ranjeeth, Wadla Srikanth and Arepalli Esthari. Among those sentenced to three years' imprisonment were Mekala Bablu, Mekala Kavitha, Muvvala Poshanna, Mala Chinna Rajanna, Dasari Surender, and Vankayala Gangadhar.

3 injured in attack on Dalit wedding procession in U.P.'s Amroha; caste abuse alleged
At least three people were injured on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) after a wedding procession by members of a Dalit community was pelted with stones and hit with rods and sticks in Rahdra village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Two daughters of Rampal, a local belonging to the Jatav (Dalit) community, were getting married. Of the two wedding processions on Monday, the first was from Hasanpur, and the other, from Moradabad, arrived later. The baraat (wedding procession) of Sonam Kumari, the older daughter, arrived from Moradabad. The incident took place during the second procession. 'On June 2, a wedding procession was being carried out around 5.30 p.m. Around 15-20 people from the same village, belonging to the Yadav community, forcefully entered the wedding procession and stopped us from dancing. When we opposed it, all the above people used casteist words and attacked us with sticks, rods, knives, and sharp-edged weapons to kill us. I, too, received an open injury on my head and many other small injuries,' Kanhaiya, the complainant, and a resident of Rahdra, said. He said many in the procession received knife injuries. 'The Yadavs said, 'how can people from our [Dalit] community take out wedding processions'?' Mr. Kanhaiya, who belongs to the Jatav community, alleged. Charges have been filed under Sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 109 (attempt to murder), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015). The case was registered at the Gajrala police station. A video purported to be of the chaotic scene has surfaced on social media. Police said they had to resort to mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order. In view of the heightened tensions, a police force has been deployed to maintain law and order. A senior police officer said that the incident had occurred because the road was narrow, loud music was playing in the background, and the people in the wedding procession could not provide space for the Yadav vehicles to pass. 'This led to an argument, which later turned into an altercation,' the officer said.
