Phillies' Jordan Romano Gives Candid Response Amid Struggles, 'Just Gotta Be Better'

The Philadelphia Phillies have dropped seven of their last eight games, including multiple close games lost at the end, with Jordan Romano to blame. After his latest outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he surrendered a walk-off sacrifice fly, Romano took the blame for some of the recent Phillies' struggles.

On NBC Sports Philadelphia's Phillies Postgame Live, Romano was interviewed in the visitors' clubhouse at PNC Park. Romano gave a very candid response amid his and the Phillies' struggles recently.
"Bottom line, just gotta be better," Romano said. "Gotta pitch better. Other guys are getting through it, I'm not. The team is scuffling a little bit, and I need to step up, (that) didn't happen."
Romano's comments come after his latest blown outing, where he loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie game against the Pirates. It was the second game in a row allowing an earned run, and this time it directly led to a Phillies loss.
While the Phillies have struggled as a team lately, Romano's struggles have been well-documented all season long. Through March and April, Romano had a ridiculous 12.19 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched. He blew two saves and had many calling for the Phillies to make drastic changes.

But after a strong May, other than a three earned run outing against the Athletics, Romano was back in the good graces of Phillies fans. Including his near-disastrous Athletics outing, Romano had a 2.53 ERA in May, a huge bounce-back for the 32-year-old reliever.

But his last two outings haven't gone as well. Over his two June outings, Romano has a 10.80 ERA. Both games were losses, and he was on the hook for the loss against the Pirates.
Romano signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal in the offseason. He's not going anywhere, especially after his strong May. Taking the blame for some of the Phillies' issues recently is a good sign.
The Phillies need Romano in 2025, and his being able to take those poor outings and flush them behind him is huge for the Phillies reliever. After a poor start to his Phillies tenure, Romano is sitting at a 7.54 ERA. While he's struggled, he isn't making any excuses and taking the blame for his and the Phillies' recent struggles.

Phillies Blasted for $100M Investment in Fan-Favorite Outfielder

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies have a luxury most other Major League Baseball teams don't. With their $300 million-plus payroll, the Phillies can occasionally make a financial commitment that they know might not age well to try and help win a championship. And there are a few questionable contracts littered up and down the roster. Ask most Phillies fans, and they'll have no issue whatsoever with the $100 million commitment the team made to right fielder Nick Castellanos before the 2022 season. He's had some big hits, especially in October, and he's a colorful personality that the city has embraced. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 12: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts after hitting a home run in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves during Game Four of the Division Series at Citizens... PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 12: Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts after hitting a home run in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves during Game Four of the Division Series at Citizens Bank Park on October 12, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. MoreBut from a value standpoint, his production hasn't lived up to that dollar amount. In fact, this season, he might be the sport's least valuable right fielder on a per-dollar basis. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report took a shot at the Castellanos contract on Tuesday, when he named the 33-year-old to his "All-Overpaid Team" across MLB this season. "Castellanos ranks dead-last in the majors in Fielding Run Value (minus-12), and he's bottom three in Outs Above Average (minus-11)," wrote Miller. "What's funny is he hasn't actually committed any errors yet this season, but out probability and similar range-based metrics show he simply does not get to nearly as many balls as he should. "If the Phillies fail to re-sign Kyle Schwarber, the silver lining is they could remove Castellanos' glove from the equation in the final year of his contract by making him the primary DH." Defensive incompetence doesn't always come in the form of errors, as Miller accurately conveys. And having to hide Castellanos' glove in right, especially when the rest of the outfield has been largely mediocre defensively, has the potential to hurt the Phillies just as much as an ill-timed slump. But at the same time, the Phillies have enough spending power that the $20 million salary they have to pay next year doesn't really handcuff the front office, enabling them to keep Castellanos around and hope he can come through in more big moments. Phillies Predicted to Finally Part Ways With Veteran Pitcher to Make Room For Aaron Nola

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola has been on the injured list since May, but he is nearing a return to the big leagues. Nola's return will force the Phillies to make a move to get him a spot on the roster. Taijuan Walker will be pushed out of the rotation, but he will not be the one to be designated for assignment. FanSided's Zachary Rotman suggested Joe Ross would be cut loose in order to accommodate Nola. Ross has a 5.16 ERA in 32 games this year. He had a 3.77 ERA for the Milwaukee Brewers last year, but has not found success in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Walker has a 3.39 ERA in 25 games, including 14 starts. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 14: Aaron Nola #27 of the Philadelphia Phillies walks to the dugout after being removed from the game in the top of the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals during... PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MAY 14: Aaron Nola #27 of the Philadelphia Phillies walks to the dugout after being removed from the game in the top of the fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals during game two of a doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park on May 14, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cardinals defeated the Phillies 14-7. MoreHe has bounced back in a big way after a terrible first two seasons with the Phillies. He would take the open bullpen job with Ross gone. Nola has made two rehab starts in Triple-A. He has a 1.35 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of work. Nola had a 6.16 ERA in his nine regular-season starts this year, but perhaps time on the injured list will have him back to pitching like a star. Ross has been in the big leagues for eight seasons, and the Phillies signed him to a one-year, $4 million deal for this season. It will not be difficult for them to move on, especially considering how Walker has played this year. The Phillies are trying to pull away from the New York Mets in the National League East. Adding Nola to the mix will surely help that cause. More MLB: Aaron Boone Makes Puzzling Claim About Yankees Offense Amid Firing Rumors
