Dig! XX review – amazing film of battling 90s psych rockers revisited two decades on
After 20 years, Ondi Timoner has rereleased her riveting and colossal documentary study of two psych rock bands, the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and their epic dual story of success and failure. There is about 40 minutes of extra material and a present-day coda that reveals, among other things, that each band has a member who now sells real estate. That ending, brutally and suddenly visiting grey-haired middle age on these gorgeous rock'n'roll exquisites, reminded me of the Fellini-esque dream opening to Woody Allen's Stardust Memories in which two trains, one carrying life's winners and the other with hapless losers, wind up at the same dusty rubbish heap.
Dig! XX, which took years to shoot, is alternately narrated by the Warhols' frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, and the BJM's relentlessly goofy tambourine player, Joel Gion, and it shows the complex 'frenmity' of the two bands. Almost from the outset, it seemed as if the Dandy Warhols were destined for commercial success tainted by feelings of selling out, and their pals the Brian Jonestown Massacre were heading for failure redeemed by a magnificent and self-destructive kind of integrity.
All of them were devoted to the traditional excesses and entitlements of rock'n'roll and enamoured of their 1960s image; the BJM's guitarist Matt Hollywood even affected John Lennon specs. But it is quite late on in the film that someone makes a very good point: 'Sixties bands got into drugs. But they were famous first.' Nowhere in the film does any band-member reflect on the self-fulfilling prophecy of success and failure in their joke-names: Andy Warhol, triumphant and world-famous in the depthless world of celebrity for a lot longer than 15 minutes, and Brian Jones, dying young (or living for ever) after a mysterious accident in his swimming pool.
The undisputed star of the film is surely the BJM's leader, Anton Newcombe, a snake-hipped and bedraggled Adonis who provides pure on-camera gold with his outrageous behaviour, motormouthed self-pity and disdain for everyone else; the tone is set when he blows the band's entire tour budget on sitars. The BJM suspect, with good reason, that the Warhols are jealous of their authentic rock'n'roll chaos; they live in the real thing which the prissier Warhols can only fabricate in their photoshoots, one of which takes place without permission in the BJM's squalid shared apartment. The bands both tour endlessly, an ordeal of hardship and frustration, chasing the breakout success that only happens to the Dandy Warhols because they are the ones with discipline and don't have full-on fistfights on stage. (Amazingly, gloriously, and also tragically, the ageing and reunited BJM have a public punch-up in 2023.)
But does the rock'n'roll world camouflage the truth about Newcombe's mental state and drug abuse? Do we confer the ironised title of damaged genius on him by not seeing his pain and unhappiness? He goes in and out of rehab, something the film can't really show. And, for me, Gion is the other enigma: always smirking, gurning, wise-cracking – always on. Is there a hidden truth he is not showing us? A gripping and desperately sad story.
Dig! XX is in UK cinemas on 25 March for one night, then on limited release in cinemas from 28 March.

Mel B's huge 50th birthday celebrations incomplete without two Spice Girls
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Mel B officially turned 50 over the weekend, and celebrated in style with former Spice Girls bandmates, Mel C and Emma Bunton. But while Wannabe hitmakers all danced away to their hits at Victoria Beckham's 50th bash last year, the fashion designer and fellow bandmate Geri Halliwell-Horner were nowhere to be seen at Mel B's celebrations. Mel B – full name Melanie Brown – had a heavily Spice Girls nostalgia-fuelled theme, as all attendees wore leopard print in a nod to her Scary Spice garms of the 90s and 00s. Some were surprised that not all of the band were in attendance, especially after rumour has it they are planning a big Abba Voyage-esque 30-year anniversary reunion tour in 2026. 'Friendship never ends love seeing the Mel's & Emma together….such a shame the other two … Nevertheless it looked like everyone had a Spice-tular time,' wrote fan suzy_29 on her Instagram post, showing her pumping up the dance floor with Mel C and Emma. Mel B also soundtracked the video, which saw her rolling around on the floor with friends, and rocking out in a fabulous shoulder-padded minidress, with the Spice Girls' hit Spice Up Your Life. 'Where's Geri and Victoria?' asked coffeplanet_cf, as andrewmanq wondered the same. An insider has claimed to The Sun: Mel's throwing a huge party in Leeds for her 50th. It's also her fiance's birthday today so it's a joint celebration and will be a real family affair. 'But Geri and Posh can't make it. Posh had a work commitment she couldn't get out of.' This comes days after the outlet reported Victoria – who swerved the 2019 Spice Girls tour – has given the digital avatar tour the green light. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Scoring nine number ones between 1996 and 2000 (including six number ones in a row), the Spice Girls became one of the biggest selling pop acts of all time. More Trending Geri – aka Ginger Spice – left the group in 1998 before the group's eventual split two years later, and the last time the quintlet all performed together was at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony. In March, Geri teased to The Sunday Times that 'there will be something' coming for the group. 'We love each other. I love them, I care about them, and we want the best for each other. We shared something so monumental. We've always believed in each other, had trust in each other, which is beautiful,' she said. 'My hope is we come back together as a collective. It's more respectful to come as one, so we'll come as one,' she said, adding that the five of them do have a WhatsApp group chat. Got a story? Dior show packs drama and intrigue for Maria Grazia Chiuri's love letter to Rome
Dior's first catwalk show in Rome was a night of high drama on and off the catwalk that left the fashion industry with a cliffhanger ending. Borrowing the original working title of Federico Fellini's film 8 ½, Maria Grazia Chiuri, designer of Dior since 2016, called it 'The Beautiful Confusion.' She was talking about Rome, with its heady jumble of art, culture, faith and mopeds, and about a collection in which haute couture pieces were mixed with theatrical costumes. But there was also an inescapable allusion to the question of her own future of Dior. Even before the show opened, operatically coded with models in Venetian masks and knots of Eyes Wide Shut lace pageanting at nightfall through the central parterre of a villa packed with Roman antiquities, the evening was ablaze with intrigue. Chiuri was born and began her career in Rome, and the deeply personal nature of the show, which was a passionate love letter to her home city, fuelled longstanding rumours that this was orchestrated as a swansong. Chiuri has tripled sales at Dior during her nine-year tenure, but the Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, recently appointed to lead menswear design at the house, is seen as waiting in the wings to assume complete creative control of the house. The plot thickened when it emerged that this cruise collection would also include looks from the autumn haute couture collection, which would normally be under wraps until July, putting a question mark over Dior's plans for the next Paris season. Like a Fellini film, there was no neat ending. The evening finished without official news, and with Dior's next chapter unwritten. But if it was a farewell, it was a fond and fabulous one for a designer whose progressive vision of fashion's power to platform feminism, female artists and the under-celebrated history of female creativity has been a gamechanger for her industry. Guests had been issued with a dress code – white for women, black for men – taken from a white ball thrown in 1930 by the Roman patron Mimì Pecci-Blunt – 'an extraordinary woman who loved the arts', Chiuri said before the show. The effect was to synthesise the front row with a collection that was 90% white, drawing the audience into the story. Each outfit brought the drama: a tailcoat suit with tiny ivory silk buttons; silvered latticework fit for a Renaissance princess, translucent classical gowns that looked like marble goddesses come to life; liturgical pomp in capes and collars tipping a hat to the Vatican in its jubilee year. The 450-strong guest list was heavily tilted toward Chiuri's friends and family, and luminaries of the Roman fashion and art world. Sign up to Fashion Statement Style, with substance: what's really trending this week, a roundup of the best fashion journalism and your wardrobe dilemmas solved after newsletter promotion 'My last show in Rome was for another brand, and it was over 10 years ago, so this is a big emotional moment for me,' Chiuri said before the show. The storytelling on the catwalk had close links to a personal project that Chiuri and her daughter Rachele Regini have masterminded and financed independent of Dior. The pair have renovated Teatro della Cometa, a 233-seat experimental theatre that was founded by Mimì Pecci-Blunt and became a cultural hotspot in the city when it opened in 1958, but closed just eleven years later after a fire. Drama aside, however, there are more prosaic possible explanations for Dior staging a show in Rome. Christian Dior himself loved the country, declaring in a letter home from holiday in Capri in 1957 that 'this is paradise!' More pragmatically, Italy has been the chosen destination for several luxury houses this year, with Gucci and Chanel staging shows in Lake Como and Florence respectively. In a challenging economic environment, the timeless elegance of Italy is seen as a reliably desirable backdrop for fashion.

'I thought, 'I'm going to look just like she does on the box', and instead, it was this very inky, almost Elvira-esque black hair.' Ariana has since responded to the claims and commented to Cassandra: "I'm so disheartened to see this. "I actually don't even remember getting the chance to meet you because I had an anxiety attack and to my memory, left before the rest of my family (this was around 7 years ago and at the time i was really not great with being in public crowds or loud places)…" She added: "But if I'm misremembering this moment, I sincerely apologise for offending you so."
