Dig! XX review – amazing film of battling 90s psych rockers revisited two decades on

The Guardian24-03-2025
After 20 years, Ondi Timoner has rereleased her riveting and colossal documentary study of two psych rock bands, the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and their epic dual story of success and failure. There is about 40 minutes of extra material and a present-day coda that reveals, among other things, that each band has a member who now sells real estate. That ending, brutally and suddenly visiting grey-haired middle age on these gorgeous rock'n'roll exquisites, reminded me of the Fellini-esque dream opening to Woody Allen's Stardust Memories in which two trains, one carrying life's winners and the other with hapless losers, wind up at the same dusty rubbish heap.
Dig! XX, which took years to shoot, is alternately narrated by the Warhols' frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, and the BJM's relentlessly goofy tambourine player, Joel Gion, and it shows the complex 'frenmity' of the two bands. Almost from the outset, it seemed as if the Dandy Warhols were destined for commercial success tainted by feelings of selling out, and their pals the Brian Jonestown Massacre were heading for failure redeemed by a magnificent and self-destructive kind of integrity.
All of them were devoted to the traditional excesses and entitlements of rock'n'roll and enamoured of their 1960s image; the BJM's guitarist Matt Hollywood even affected John Lennon specs. But it is quite late on in the film that someone makes a very good point: 'Sixties bands got into drugs. But they were famous first.' Nowhere in the film does any band-member reflect on the self-fulfilling prophecy of success and failure in their joke-names: Andy Warhol, triumphant and world-famous in the depthless world of celebrity for a lot longer than 15 minutes, and Brian Jones, dying young (or living for ever) after a mysterious accident in his swimming pool.
The undisputed star of the film is surely the BJM's leader, Anton Newcombe, a snake-hipped and bedraggled Adonis who provides pure on-camera gold with his outrageous behaviour, motormouthed self-pity and disdain for everyone else; the tone is set when he blows the band's entire tour budget on sitars. The BJM suspect, with good reason, that the Warhols are jealous of their authentic rock'n'roll chaos; they live in the real thing which the prissier Warhols can only fabricate in their photoshoots, one of which takes place without permission in the BJM's squalid shared apartment. The bands both tour endlessly, an ordeal of hardship and frustration, chasing the breakout success that only happens to the Dandy Warhols because they are the ones with discipline and don't have full-on fistfights on stage. (Amazingly, gloriously, and also tragically, the ageing and reunited BJM have a public punch-up in 2023.)
But does the rock'n'roll world camouflage the truth about Newcombe's mental state and drug abuse? Do we confer the ironised title of damaged genius on him by not seeing his pain and unhappiness? He goes in and out of rehab, something the film can't really show. And, for me, Gion is the other enigma: always smirking, gurning, wise-cracking – always on. Is there a hidden truth he is not showing us? A gripping and desperately sad story.
Dig! XX is in UK cinemas on 25 March for one night, then on limited release in cinemas from 28 March.

People call Jenna Ortega 'real Wednesday' after revealing childhood hobby

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has been crowned the 'real Wednesday Addams' after revealing her favourite hobby when she was a child - but not everyone is convinced The Netflix show 'Wednesday' is about to return to our screens for a second season, with the first four episodes dropping today (August 6). If it's anything like season 1, we're in for more monstrous mayhem, gore and heaps of gothic sarcasm. ‌ The series follows Wednesday from the Addams family as she attends the boarding school Nevermore Academy, where she's attempting to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago. The role of Wednesday is played by Jenna Ortega, whom fans claimed has captured Wednesday's iconic personality perfectly. However, how much of it is actually acting? ‌ Ahead of the release of the first season, Jenna appeared in an interview with Wired, where she was asked about her relationship with former The Fallout co-star Maddie Ziegler was still friends. ‌ 'She's one of my greatest friends ever,' the Wednesday star said before adding her "beautiful, wonderful baby angel face" pal was "somebody that I instantly clicked with". "Maddie and I are the same person in different fonts," as she continued. "She's such a weirdo and I'm a weirdo." ‌ Ortega then went on to illustrate her own "weirdness" with an interesting example of how she used to pass the time. But rather than listing something typical like reading or riding her bike, she revealed her interesting in performing "autopsies on little animals when [she] was younger," including "little lizards that I found that were dead in my backyard". She quickly went on to clarify this wasn't a shared hobby with the former Dance Moms star, who's more of a "weirdo in the sense that she breaks out into characters or movements or makes faces". "Her comedic timing is so under-appreciated," she explained. "She makes me laugh. We have a good time. We're really weird together.' ‌ People were quick to make note of this obscure hobby, with some saying it sounded very Wednesday Addams-esque. "Gives Wednesday Addams vibes," one person wrote on Reddit. However, another person questioned: "Why would she say this?" A third person said: "Not something I would ever admit to, but to be fair there is a big difference between actually killing the animal to do a little autopsy on it and just finding a dead one and doing it." "Maybe I'm weird but this isn't weird to me… it sounds like something some little kids have done and still do," someone else suggested. However, not everyone believed she was telling the truth, as another person said: "I am choosing to believe she's putting a fake persona to get people to watch Wednesday." "This is the first thing I thought! I actually think it's more impressive when you play the role so well even though you don't have an relatability to it," someone else said.

Nostalgic film sequel breaks records on Netflix with 46,700,000 views

The highly anticipated sequel to an Adam Sandler movie comedy – coming 29 years after the original – has now claimed Netflix's biggest opening weekend of all time in the US. Happy Gilmore 2 saw Sandler revisit popular territory as part of his mega deal with the streamer, reportedly worth $250million (£186m) and renewed multiple times. And Netflix will be seeing this as money very well spent after the golfing comedy sequel amassed a huge 46,700,000 views in its first three days alone on the platform. Not only is that the most watched a English language film has even been in the US for its opening weekend, but it's also the biggest-ever audience an Adam Sandler flick has attracted during its crucial first three days. The xx star has made multiple original movies for Netflix so far, including Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween and rare serious film Spaceman. The streamer defines views by total hours watched (an eye-watering 91,900,000 hours in this case) by the run-time of the movie. The 1996 film followed the titular character, played by Sandler, a failed ice hockey player trying to raise enough money to stop the foreclosure of his grandmother's house, who fortuitously discovers he can hit long shots in golf and gains a fan following. But just as the former Saturday Night Live actor has often split opinion, among the rave reviews from die-hard fans are many decrying the quality of this new 'zero-star' sequel, branding it 'tripe' and 'a terrible waste of time'. Jaja B even admitted in their reaction on Rotten Tomatoes: 'I think this is my last/final break-up with a once great Adam Sandler.' In the follow-up film, a terrible stroke of bad luck puts golf's one-time bad boy back on the back foot and in desperate need of a comeback – which is offered to him by Maxi Energy Drink CEO Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie), who is sponsoring a new golfing league of which he wants Happy to be the star. 'I hate to do this… but this was 0/10 stars. Of If I could've given 0, I would have. It was cameo central and cheap, no effort jokes. Don't meet your heroes,' wrote Sean M in his reaction on the review aggregator site. Stephen M agreed, calling it 'pointless' and 'awful', although it does currently hold a fresh 70% audience rating at the time of publication. 'Sandler is rinsing that Netflix money and producing tripe. No funny moments at all. Happy Gilmore was great, but this one is the worst movie I've watched,' he complained. 'The movie left a sour taste in my mouth [and] was a terrible waste of time,' added Austin C while Rog S moaned: 'This movie was a flaming pile of garbage.' Another fan echoed these thoughts, branding Happy Gilmore 2 'by far the worst Adam Sandler movie ever produced', despite calling the star 'one of my all-time faves'. 'I'm shocked that so many personalities read this script and attached their names to the film. This ruined my Friday night,' they added. Happy Gilmore 2 does boast an impressive cast, welcoming back the likes of Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, original director Dennis Dugan, and Ben Stiller in his previous role as Hal from both Happy Gilmore and Hubie Halloween. The movie also features pro-golfer John Daly as a fictionalised version of himself, and multiple members of Sandler's immediate family, including daughter Sunny, alongside Safdie, Bad Bunny and a swathe of cameos from the likes of Haley Joel Osment, Steve Buscemi, Post Malone, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Travis Kelce, Rob Schneider and Oliver Hudson – and a whole host of professional golf stars. Other viewers had more fun with the film though, and urged people not to see it as high art, but purely entertainment. 'Is this going to win Oscars? No more than the first did… It was a ride of fan service with familiar faves and call backs in nearly every scene, and it works for what it is,' insisted Marcus J, while Bailey L added: 'It is just as it intended: Stupid, yet funny as hell. The cameos alone make this movie perfect. It's just fun to watch if you give in.' 'To see Adam come back and make a movie filled with cameo appearances and pay homage to those who passed away almost brings a tear to my eye. This movie is great had me laughing the entire time and it filled me with a sense of nostalgia I haven't felt in a while,' shared Johnny G. Original Happy Gilmore cast members who died in the intervening years included Carl Weathers, who played Happy's mentor; Frances Bay, who was Grandma Gilmore; Richard Kiel and Joe Flaherty. Meanwhile Liana O described it as the 'best comedy I've seen in years' while Syah Izani K commented: 'I laughed from the beginning to the end of the movie.' 'This is just as good as the first one,' enthused Joshua C in his reaction. 'It brought back the golden age of comedy movies. I haven't even finished it, just got to Stephen Smith in it and couldn't even wait to write a review.' More Trending Which could explain the film's positive rating so far, alongside Sandler's passionate fans. Happy Gilmore 2 has received mixed to negative reactions from critics, with Empire saying it 'never ascends higher than 'hit-and-miss'' but has 'sheer goofy, golf-y geniality' in a three-star review. But The Daily Beast called it potentially 'the worst sequel of all time' and observed: 'Arguably the least inspired film in the actor's canon, if not all of movie history.' Happy Gilmore 2 is streaming exclusively on Netflix now. Got a story?
