Mohammed Sofo, Emil Forsberg, Carlos Coronel lead Red Bulls past Nashville 2-0
New York, the reigning Eastern Conference champions, took a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute on the goal by Sofo — a 20-year-old forward making his first start. Sofo, who scored unassisted off a rebound with a right-footed shot from the center of the box, did not play last week and played 27 minutes in one appearance last season.
Forsberg found the net for the10th time in his two seasons in the league to stretch the advantage to 2-0 in the 30th minute. Omar Valencia, who was tagged with a yellow card in the 12th minute, notched his first career assist in his second career start. The 20-year-old defender played one minute in one appearance last season.
Coronel finished with two saves for the Red Bulls (1-1-0) to complete the 36th shutout of his career — all but one with New York. It was his 130th start for the club.
Joe Willis stopped three shots for Nashville (0-1-1), which has yet to score this season. Willis finished with his club-record 50th clean sheet in a scoreless home opener against the New England Revolution.
The Red Bulls improved to 18-6-6 in home openers and upped their all-time record against Nashville to 3-0-4. New York dropped a 1-0 decision on the road to Cincinnati in its opener.
The Red Bulls travel to play Atlanta United on Saturday. Nashville will host the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

The Brooklyn Nets took on the contract of Michael Porter Jr this summer, as they relinquished Cam Johnson, but also received 2032 first-round selection for their troubles. While the deal was primarily motivated by financial reasons, Porter Jr should have an immediate impact on the team, in more ways than one. Untapped potential? While he won a championship with the Nuggets in 2023, Porter Jr always played on the shadows of Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray. As he entered the NBA with Kevin Durant-like comparisons, there's always been, in the NBA sphere, some wonderings about how he'd fare, if he were to be given the keys to the offense. Those keys have now been placed in his hands, at least until they find resolution on the Cam Thomas situation, who will assuredly take up numerous shots this season as well. That said, the idea of a 6'10 wing taking shots off the dribble, and assserting himself offensively, is an intriguing one. Porter Jr can shoot over most players, and his accuracy (career 40.6 3FG%) has probably always flown a bit too under the radar. And Porter Jr will take shots more off his own accord, because why shouldn't he? The biggest obstacle will be to understand where his spots will be, as he hasn't had the freedom, at the NBA level, to identify those spots with the ball in his hands. Will he become a mid-range pull-up shooter? Will he create his own looks from beyond the three-point line? Will he attack the rim more? Loads of questions, which we'll all get an answer to in a few months. Impact on the young guards With the Nets drafting multiple ball-handlers in the draft this year, having Porter Jr as a passing target is not to be underestimated. Porter Jr is a player who historically has been assisted on the vast majority of his shots. 72.9% of his two-pointers were created by others, as were 92.2% of his three-pointers. Those percentages might find themselves lowered given he's no longer playing with Jokić, but that doesn't mean he won't play off the ball anymore. Ben Saraf, Egor Demin, and Nolan Traoré especially will all develop further by having a 6'10 target, who will run the wings, fill the paint, and generally work as a play finisher for them. This should accelerate their process in learning how to read the floor at the NBA level, and how to utilize scoring wings, of which there is no shortage in this league. The US Open Mixed Doubles Tournament Kicks Off Tomorrow: Here's Why It's Different (and Why It's Sold Out)
The tennis world was buzzing earlier this summer when news of the US Open's new mixed doubles tournament was announced. For starters, mixed doubles—normally played during the course of the main tournament, making it unlikely that the world's most well-known singles players take part—was moved up to the US Open's Fan Week, which started yesterday. Prize money was also increased fivefold, so that the championship team will now take home a cool $1 million; and for the first time, the quick-format, two-day blitzkrieg tournament will be shown widely on TV. What does that mean when the first serve is tossed into the air? Well, in the first round alone, we'll get to see Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu take on Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula; the all-Serbian team of Olga Danilovic and her idol and mentor, Novak Djokovic, playing the all-Russian team of Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev; and the all-American team of Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys against Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud—to name just a few. All of the matches until the final will be played under a streamlined format: best of three sets, as per usual, but the sets are only to four games, with no-ad scoring (in other words, you don't need to win games by the standard two points, so if the score is 30-30, whoever wins the next point wins the game); if the set score is 4-4, a tiebreak will determine the winner of the set; and if the first two sets are split 1-1, a 10-point tiebreaker will determine the match winner, rather than a third set. The sets in the final will be played to a regular six games, but still with no-ad scoring; set tiebreakers are played at 6-6; and the same 10-point tiebreaker will determine the match winner if the first two sets are split. (Got it? Honestly, you'll pick it up better from watching the matches.) So who's going to win? If you've watched any doubles tennis—women's, men's, juniors, mixed—you probably know that two good doubles specialists will usually beat two great singles players who've just joined forces. Doubles, after all, is a completely different game than singles: faster, more unpredictable, streaky, with more serve-and-volley, shorter points, and its own specific strategy and tactics. Among the many incredible singles players lined up at the Open, only a few with consistent, top-tier doubles experience stand out: world number-one singles player Jannik Sinner's partner is the 10-time Grand Slam doubles champion Katerina Siniakova; they'll play world number-three singles player Alexander Zverev and the Tokyo Olympics' silver medalist in women's doubles Belinda Bencic in the first round. And the American dream team of Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend is notable less because Shelton is currently ranked sixth in the world than because Townsend is the world's current top-ranked women's doubles player.
