Chinese hotel ordered to cease red panda wake-up call encounters
The Chongqing Forestry Bureau ordered the Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel to cease all activities that bring visitors into close contact with wild animals.
The hotel had gone viral for its red panda wake-up calls, which gave guests, including young children, hands-on encounters with red pandas in their rooms.
Hotel officials said there are four red pandas living at the facility, and they would take turns making the visits to guest rooms. How long they spent with guests depended on the animal's mood temperament on the day.
Red pandas are second-class protected animals in China and they are listed as an endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.
Sun Quanhui, a scientist from the World Animal Protection organization, said the red panda wake-up call service could be considered animal abuse, as red pandas are sensitive animals with stress responses that could endanger themselves or the humans in their presence.

The total was 4% higher than the previous July's record of 3.29 million set last year, with younger travelers on school trips driving the increase. China had the largest number of visitors to Japan at 974,500, up 25.5%, South Korea at 678,600, down 10.4%, Taiwan at 604, 200 up 5.7% and the United States up 10.3% with 277,100 visitors. Taiwanese visitors rose to an all-time high due to new flight routes and increased flights to Japan. Travels from Hong Kong and South Korea showed a decrease because of a social media rumor that Japan would suffer from a devastating natural disaster in July. The Japanese organization said it will closely analyze market trends to pursue the promotion of strategic inbound tourism. The government aims to boost travel spending per person to $1,355 and raise the average overnight stay in regional areas to two nights, in its three year fiscal 2025 plan.

File Photo by Juan Manuel Blanco/EPA-EFE Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration has authorized emergency use of animal drugs to treat and prevent infestations of the New World Screwworm, which poses an emerging threat to U.S. livestock and food security. The parasite infests warm-blooded animals and in rare cases humans, causing tissue damage and occasionally death. Though eradicated in both North and Central America a decades ago, the screwworm has progressed north since 2022 and is nearing the U.S. southern border. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said it issued a declaration on Tuesday allowing the FDA to issue emergency use authorizations for animal drugs to prevent infestations. "Today, we are taking decisive action to safeguard the nation's food supply from this emerging threat," HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement. "This authorization equips FDA to act quickly, limit the spread of New World Screwworm and protect America's livestock." Endemic to Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and the countries of South America, the New World Screwworm strikingly resembles a fly, but when in its larval stage it burrows into the flies of a living animals, such as livestock, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. The United States has worked with Panama for decades to prevent the parasite's northward expansion, according to the USDA, which resulted in the eradication of the insect from the United States in 1966. There are no FDA-approved drugs for NWS, but through an Emergency Use Authorization, the FDA can permit the use of certain animal drug products that have been approved for other purposes or are available in other countries. "This emergency use authorization is another tool we can use in the fight against New World Screwworm," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said. "Our cattle ranchers and livestock producers are relying on the Trump administration to defend their livelihoods. Stopping this pest is a national security priority and we are linking arms across President [Donald] Trump's Cabinet to defend our borders and push back this threat."

AAP recommends children receive COVID-19 vaccine

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The United States' leading pediatrics association is recommending that children as young as six months old be inoculated against COVID-19, going against the Trump administration, which stopped recommending healthy children receive the vaccine. The American Academy of Pediatrics made the recommendation Tuesday in the publication of its childhood and adolescent immunization schedule for this year. The report specifically recommends that children be inoculated against COVID-19 between the ages of six and 23 months, stating that those in this age range are at the highest risk of suffering the worst effects of the disease. "Children younger than 2 years old are especially vulnerable to severe COVID-19 and should be prioritized for vaccination unless they have a known allergy to the vaccine or its ingredients," the AAP said in a release accompanying the report. The AAP recommendation goes against that of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who in late May said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was no longer recommending that "healthy children" be immunized against COVID-19. Kennedy, a known vaccine skeptic, cited "a lack of any clinical data" to support booster COVID-19 shots for children. That move prompted AAP and other leading medical groups to sue Kennedy in July for making "unilateral, unscientific changes" to federal vaccine policy, calling it an "assault on science public health and evidence-based medicine." "This administration is an existential threat to vaccination in America, and those in charge are only just getting started," Richard Hughes IV, partner at Epstein Becker Green and lead counsel in the case, said in a statement. "If left unchecked, Secretary Kennedy will accomplish his goal of ridding the United States of vaccines, which would unleash a wave of preventable harm on our nation's children." Kennedy in June also fired all members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and replaced them with his own appointees, including three who have spoken out against the COVID-19 vaccine, two of whom have served as witnesses in lawsuits against vaccine makers and one who served on the board of the nation's oldest anti-vaccine group.
