
Researchers develop new tool to measure biological age

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new tool that can compute the 'biological age' of human organs by processing a single vial of blood. The tool, unveiled in Nature Medicine Wednesday morning, was developed by a research team spearheaded by Tony Wyss-Coray. Wyss-Coray, a Stanford Medicine professor who has spent almost 15 years fixated on the study of aging, said that the tool could 'change our approach to health care.'
'It could help us shift from sick care to health care, and empower people to take care of their own body,' he said. Scouring a single draw of blood for thousands of proteins, the tool works by first comparing the levels of these proteins with their average levels at a given age. An artificial intelligence algorithm then uses these gaps to derive a 'biological age' for each organ. To test the accuracy of these 'biological ages,' the researchers processed data for 45,000 people from the UK Biobank, a database that has kept detailed health information from over half a million British citizens for the last 17 years.
When they analysed the data, the researchers found a clear trend for all 11 organs they studied; biologically older organs were significantly more likely to develop aging-related diseases than younger ones. For instance, those with older hearts were at much higher risk for atrial fibrillation or heart failure, while those with older lungs were much more likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
But the brain's biological age, Wyss-Coray said, was 'particularly important in determining or predicting how long you're going to live.'
'If you have a very young brain, those people live the longest,' he said. 'If you have a very old brain, those people are going to die the soonest out of all the organs we looked at.' Indeed, for a given chronological age, those with 'extremely aged brains' — the 7% whose brains scored the highest on biological age — were over 12 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease over the next decade than those with 'extremely youthful brains' — the 7% whose brains inhabited the other end of the spectrum. Wyss-Coray's team also found several factors — smoking, alcohol, poverty, insomnia and processed meat consumption — were directly correlated with biologically aged organs. Poultry consumption, vigorous exercise, and oily fish consumption were among the factors correlated with biologically youthful organs. Supplements like glucosamine and estrogen replacements also seemed to have 'protective effects,' Wyss-Coray said.
With these results, Wyss-Coray's team set about testing the tool on people in real time. The fifth person they tested was Paul Coletta, an entrepreneur who decided to participate in the test after reading a preliminary Nature paper that had been sent by a friend. The test found that Coletta, then 60, had kidneys that were biologically 68 years old. 'My GFR, my creatinine, all the typical kidney biomarkers came back as normal, but I followed up with an ultrasound, and it revealed a large renal cyst in my left kidney,' he said. 'It found an early signal of decline, and it empowered me to act.'
Coletta was so impressed that he agreed to found Vero Bioscience, a company that now has an exclusive license from Stanford Medicine to commercialize the product, with Wyss-Coray.
Coletta said he planned to make the tool the core of an 'at-home AI health clinic.'
'It's not just a kit where you send us your blood and you get a result,' he said. 'We want to support the consumer through the journey of what the intervention should be for that organ, interpreting the results and then retesting to see if there was a reversal in the organ age.' The test, Coletta said, would cost $200 once it could be operated at scale.
Malia Fullerton, a professor of bioethics and humanities at the University of Washington, said that while the tool 'seems very promising as a global technique,' there were several ethical concerns when it came to its application.
'I could imagine for folks who are interested in being super agers, a desire to get rid of their quickly aging organs and replace them with new ones,' she said. 'I see the first negative consequence — particularly if this goes directly to consumer — being putting strains on our organ donation system, which is already under complete duress.' Overall, Fullerton said, 'the question your readers could ask themselves is: Is human lifespan, and is human quality of life merely a function of the health of our organs, or is there some higher-order set of interactions here that are not being captured in this kind of analysis?'
Wyss-Coray said the risks of an organ transplant currently far outweighed the potential reward of replacing an aged organ with a healthy one, particularly since the test was merely a risk assessment. In any case, he said, it would be challenging to solve the issue completely.

Measles is back but it didn't have to be. What is the western world thinking?
When I was five years old, I had measles. What I remember most, beyond feeling terrible, was how worried my parents were. Statistically only between one and three children out of a thousand with measles will die. It's a tiny number, until you think it might be your child that makes up the mortality statistics. I remember lying in a darkened room for about a week, bored, sick, aching, unable to read, uninterested in television or the radio. It was sunny outside but the curtains in my bedroom were closed. Just enough light got in that my eyes still hurt and my father let me wear a pair of his sunglasses. One of the many unpleasant symptoms of measles is sensitivity to light. The positive lesson of that outbreak for me, my family and millions of others around the world was the prospect of herd immunity if we were vaccinated against common childhood diseases like measles, mumps and rubella, polio and smallpox. The British government view is clear. The MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent your children getting sick or even risking death. The miracle – as it must have seemed to my parents and older generations – was that vaccination meant it was as if these diseases no longer existed. Nowadays smallpox, caused by the variola virus and feared for its high mortality rate, only exists in laboratories. There have been no known smallpox cases anywhere in the world since 1977. Vaccination programmes are a public health miracle. They are as significant as providing clean water to eliminate the threat of cholera and other water-borne diseases. What is therefore astonishing to those of us who remember and survived the childhood misery of measles is the degree of 'vaccine scepticism' in developed countries. This is contributing to measles outbreaks and the advancement of other diseases too, including in societies that felt as if these diseases were no longer a significant threat, except perhaps among the poorest and least developed countries in the world. Measles is back. As a result of the infection spreading among unvaccinated people in Texas, the US is seeing the worst measles outbreak in 33 years. Some speak of a 'post-herd immunity' problem, with immunisation rates disrupted after the coronavirus outbreak and also diminished by an increase in vaccine scepticism. This is more accurately defined as the unscientific belief – based on anecdotes and faith rather than research – that vaccines either do not work or are harmful. US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy Jr is known as a prominent vaccine sceptic. His appointment may further reduce the inclination of some parents to get their children vaccinated. The National Library of Medicine website includes a recent report that 'vaccine scepticism is an increasingly important barrier to optimal coverage in developed countries'. The report goes on to conclude that personal or political views often undermine scientific facts. 'Just like specific political views [for example on reproductive rights, gun control] reflect a broader set of values and a commitment to a certain cultural group, vaccination scepticism typically reflects core beliefs about personal agency, and a spiritual, natural, life-affirming approach to health … ['I feel that most knowledge comes from spiritual experiences'],' the report says. Britain is also seeing an upswing in measles cases as a result of a downturn in vaccination rates in some areas. A child died in a hospital in Liverpool recently and parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated. A UK government report says: 'In 2024 there were 2,911 laboratory confirmed measles cases in England, the highest number of cases recorded annually, since 2012. This was initially driven by an outbreak in Birmingham but was soon overtaken by a large outbreak in London, with small clusters in other regions.' The British government view is clear. The MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent your children getting sick or even risking death. But it is worth examining the American experience in detail since it reveals what might be called the information fault-lines in modern society. Experts providing information on measles and other diseases are distrusted by some sections of the population in modern democracies in ways that would have seemed unimaginable to my parents' generation. When I was a child, vaccinations against disease were a blessing, not a conspiracy. Last week, the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine issued a joint statement condemning 'unnecessary suffering and deaths' caused by the measles outbreak. The statement noted the highest level of measles outbreaks in 25 years and said it was grounds for 'reasonable alarm' about 'unnecessary suffering' from a disease that was once considered to have been 'eliminated' by the MMR vaccine that is 'extremely safe and effective'. Unfortunately, facts and science often fail to triumph over emotions. The question is why such emotions, fuelled by misinformation, are gaining a hold in the US right now. The World Health Organisation reported that the MMR vaccine prevented about 60 million deaths between 2000 and 2023. Even so, about 107,500 people died from measles in 2023 mostly in Asia and Africa. It is difficult to understand why some in the US act in ways likely to risk their children becoming part of that unhappy statistic. My father gave me sunglasses. Pseudo-science offers only blinkers.

Former shark fishermen now work to protect animal
Amber Hazzard, Tribune News Service They hesitated at first, but the fishermen jumped into the water after realising how calm the tiger sharks were, said Chelsea Black. Black, a postdoctoral researcher at UNC-Chapel Hill, spent two weeks at sea, teaching shark fishermen how to tag and release the animals rather than kill them. Black partners with Project Hiu, a nonprofit organization in Indonesia, to educate locals on shark conservation while giving them an alternative income source. 'Whether you're in North Carolina or you're in Indonesia, sharks are important to you,' she explained. 'The health of shark populations contributes to the health of our oceans.' Why do we need sharks? Sharks live all over the world, and several species visit North Carolina each summer. UNC has the longest-running shark survey in the country, managed by its Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, North Carolina. These top predators eat smaller animals, balancing the populations of fish and other marine life. For example, sharks protect coral reefs by eating fish that graze on coral. Without sharks, these fish would overpopulate and destroy the coral reefs that protect beaches from storms. 'Many people, especially in coastal areas like North Carolina, rely on a healthy ocean ecosystem for our economy, business and food,' Black said. However, the population of many shark species has declined over the past 50 years. Increased demand for shark and their products has contributed to this decline, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Catching sharks to make money off of them is known as commercial shark fishing. Shark fins, in particular, are highly profitable. 'They're being fished and killed before they can reproduce ... killing the next generation of sharks,' Black said. Indonesia sits between the Indian and Pacific oceans and is home to hundreds of shark species. It is also one of the largest shark fishing nations in the world. To counteract this, Project Hiu hires fisherman to provide shark-friendly tourism activities, such as swimming with sharks. Project founder Madison Stewart repurposed a fleet of shark fishing vessels for the ecotourism business. After noticing that fishermen were primarily catching tiger sharks during September and October, Stewart invited Black to come to Indonesia and start a satellite research project tagging tiger sharks. Tiger sharks are named for the dark vertical strips on the side of their body. Averaging 10 to 14 feet and 850 to 1,400 lbs., they are one of the largest shark species. The team studies tiger sharks because they are fished less due to their low fin value. This increases their odds of surviving long enough to provide helpful information. Tagging these sharks is a team effort, with two or three people in the water, Black leaning over the side of the boat and others assisting. First, the team flips the shark upside down, putting it in a trance to safely take measurements that help the team ascertain its age and health. A fin-clip sample helps trace a shark's ancestry and what part of the world they come from. Then, they flip the shark right side up to place tags on the shark's dorsal, or top, fin. These tags show how far and/or deep the sharks are moving, revealing the shark's migration patterns, she said. Once the sharks are tagged, they are named and released. Most are named after the fishermen's children. The team has now deployed 10 tags and discovered a tiger shark hot spot. 'We found they're all staying in one small area for months, and we only have a few cases of this around the world,' Black said. The team still has a lot to uncover, however, as they are the first to tag tiger sharks in Indonesia. Black will return in September, adding 15 more tags, to better understand when the sharks are gathering and why. The goal is to show that making the hot spot a government-protected area could potentially help multiple sharks species , Black explained. It's feasible, she added, considering the hot spot is 'probably 40 square kilometers' which is 'not very big in terms of the ocean.' Potential protections could cover all or certain species of sharks for parts or the whole year, depending on migration patterns. Without this protection, Black fears certain species will go extinct in this region. The loss of shark populations in Indonesia could have ripple effects all over the world. 'It's kind of this chain reaction,' she said. 'We need to care about these things happening in the ocean across the world because it impacts every single person living on Earth.'

Los Angeles tries leniency in a time of hostility
Angela Hart, Tribune News Service Inside a bright new building in the heart of Skid Row, homeless people hung out in a canopy-covered courtyard — some waiting to take a shower, do laundry, or get medication for addiction treatment. Others relaxed on shaded grass and charged their phones as an intake line for housing grew more crowded. The Skid Row Care Campus officially opened this spring with ample offerings for people living on the streets of this historically downtrodden neighbourhood. Pop-up fruit stands and tent encampments lined the sidewalks, as well as dealers peddling meth and fentanyl in open-air drug markets. Some people, sick or strung out, were passed out on sidewalks as pedestrians strolled by on a recent afternoon. For those working toward sobriety, clinicians are on site to offer mental health and addiction treatment. Skid Row's first methadone clinic is set to open here this year. For those not ready to quit drugs or alcohol, the campus provides clean syringes to more safely shoot up, glass pipes for smoking drugs, naloxone to prevent overdoses, and drug test strips to detect fentanyl contamination, among other supplies. As many Americans have grown increasingly intolerant of street homelessness, cities and states have returned to tough-on-crime approaches that penalize people for living outside and for substance use disorders. But the Skid Row facility shows Los Angeles County leaders' embrace of the principle of harm reduction, a range of more lenient strategies that can include helping people more safely use drugs, as they contend with a homeless population estimated around 75,000 — among the largest of any county in the nation. Evidence shows the approach can help individuals enter treatment, gain sobriety, and end their homelessness, while addiction experts and county health officials note it has the added benefit of improving public health. 'We get a really bad rap for this, but this is the safest way to use drugs,' said Darren Willett, director of the Center for Harm Reduction on the new Skid Row Care Campus. 'It's an overdose prevention strategy, and it prevents the spread of infectious disease.' Despite a decline in overdose deaths, drug and alcohol use continues to be the leading cause of death among homeless people in the county. Living on the streets or in sordid encampments, homeless people saddle the health care system with high costs from uncompensated care, emergency room trips, inpatient hospitalisations, and, for many of them, their deaths. Harm reduction, its advocates say, allows homeless people the opportunity to obtain jobs, taxpayer-subsidised housing, health care, and other social services without being forced to give up drugs. Yet it's hotly debated. Politicians around the country, including Gov. Gavin Newsom in California, are reluctant to adopt harm reduction techniques, such as needle exchanges or supervised places to use drugs, in part because they can be seen by the public as condoning illicit behaviour. Although Democrats are more supportive than Republicans, a national poll this year found lukewarm support across the political spectrum for such interventions. Los Angeles is defying President Donald Trump's agenda as he advocates for forced mental health and addiction treatment for homeless people — and locking up those who refuse. The city has also been the scene of large protests against Trump's immigration crackdown, which the president has fought by deploying National Guard troops and Marines. Trump's most detailed remarks on homelessness and substance use disorder came during his campaign, when he attacked people who use drugs as criminals and said that homeless people 'have no right to turn every park and sidewalk into a place for them to squat and do drugs.' Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reinforced Trump's focus on treatment. 'Secretary Kennedy stands with President Trump in prioritising recovery-focused solutions to address addiction and homelessness,' said agency spokesperson Vianca Rodriguez Feliciano. 'HHS remains focused on helping individuals recover, communities heal, and help make our cities clean, safe, and healthy once again.' A comprehensive report led by Margot Kushel, a professor of medicine at the University of California-San Francisco, this year found that nearly half of California's homeless population had a complex behavioral health need, defined as regular drug use, heavy drinking, hallucinations, or a recent psychiatric hospitalisation. The chaos of living outside, she said — marked by violence, sexual assault, sleeplessness, and lack of housing and health care — can make it nearly impossible to get sober. Skid Row Care Campus: The new care campus is funded by about $26 million a year in local, state, and federal homelessness and health care money, and initial construction was completed by a Skid Row landlord, Matt Lee, who made site improvements on his own, according to Anna Gorman, chief operating officer for community programs at the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Operators say the campus should be able to withstand potential federal spending cuts because it is funded through a variety of sources. Glass front doors lead to an atrium inside the yellow-and-orange complex. It was designed with input from homeless people, who advised the county not just on the layout but also on the services offered on-site. There are 22 recovery beds and 48 additional beds for mostly older homeless people, arts and wellness programs, a food pantry, and pet care. Even bunnies and snakes are allowed. John Wright, 65, who goes by the nickname Slim, mingled with homeless visitors one afternoon in May, asking them what they needed to be safe and comfortable. 'Everyone thinks we're criminals, like we're out robbing everyone, but we aren't,' said Wright, who is employed as a harm reduction specialist on the campus and is trying, at his own pace, to stop using fentanyl. 'I'm homeless and I'm a drug addict, but I'm on methadone now so I'm working on it,' he said. Nearby on Skid Row, Anthony Willis rested in his wheelchair while taking a toke from a crack pipe. He'd just learned about the new care campus, he said, explaining that he was homeless for roughly 20 years before getting into a taxpayer-subsidized apartment on Skid Row. He spends most of his days and nights on the streets, using drugs and alcohol. The drugs, he said, help him stay awake so he can provide companionship and sometimes physical protection for homeless friends who don't have housing. 'It's tough sometimes living down here; it's pretty much why I keep relapsing,' said Willis, who at age 62 has asthma and arthritic knees. 'But it's also my community.' Willis said the care campus could be a place to help him kick drugs, but he wasn't sure he was ready. Research shows harm reduction helps prevent death and can build long-term recovery for people who use substances, said Brian Hurley, an addiction psychiatrist and the medical director for the Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The techniques allow health care providers and social service workers to meet people when they're ready to stop using drugs or enter treatment. 'Recovery is a learning activity, and the reality is relapse is part of recovery,' he said. 'People go back and forth and sometimes get triggered or haven't figured out how to cope with a stressor.' Swaying Public Opinion: Under harm reduction principles, officials acknowledge that people will use drugs. Funded by taxpayers, the government provides services to use safely, rather than forcing people to quit or requiring abstinence in exchange for government-subsidised housing and treatment programmes.
