A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the Montreal area, ushering cooler weather after days of scorching heat.
If a storm hits, it is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon or early evening.
Environment Canada warns that 'conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. There is also a slight risk of a tornado.'
The weather agency warns that nautical activities may be hazardous due to 'sudden, severe wind gusts over bodies of water.'
It also warns there could be electrical outages.
Weather will remain hot ahead of the possible storm.
The federal agency says maximum temperatures of nearly 30 degrees Celsius are expected on Wednesday. Combined with high humidity, it will generate humidex values between 35 and 38.
Later in the day, cooler, less humid air will slowly move in from the northwest, bringing an end to the heat wave.
Starting Thursday, more seasonal high temperatures and lower humidity are expected, according to Environment Canada. Nights should also cool down.
Numerous heat records have been broken in recent days in Quebec, as well as in Ontario and British Columbia, which is also experiencing a heat wave.
One heat-related death has been reported to the Montreal Regional Public Health Department since the beginning of the extreme heat period.
The drought accompanying this heat wave is also resulting in lower water levels in some rivers, leading to watering restrictions in some municipalities.

Lawnmower sparks two-acre grass fire in Oro-Medonte

Fire crews respond to a grass fire on Line 15 north in Oro-Medonte, Ont. on Thurs., Aug. 14, 2025. A lawn mowing job turned into a fast-moving grass fire in Oro-Medonte, burning about two acres before firefighters managed to bring it under control. According to Oro-Medonte Fire Chief Roree Payment, the blaze started on Line 15 north when a lawnmower struck a rock, creating a spark that ignited the dry, brittle grass. Firefighters from several stations responded, using leaf blowers and a brush truck to stop the flames from spreading further. Crews also worked in sweltering heat, with tanker 1 covering Station 2 to ensure other calls could still be handled. (Roree Payment/Oro-Medonte Fire Department/X) Chief Payment called efforts to bring the situation under control 'a well-coordinated attack.' While grass fires aren't unusual, Payment noted the risk is currently higher than normal given the prolonged dry conditions and lack of rain in the area. 'Normal activities in less dry conditions can often be done without much thought,' the fire chief said. 'But in these dryer conditions, more care should be taken.' He further praised crews for their 'great hustle' in containing the fire quickly. No injuries were reported and no structures damaged. A fire ban is currently in effect in Oro-Medonte, prohibiting any open air burning and fireworks.
