Zac Sapsford gives Dundee United advantage in Conference League opener

In Jim Goodwin's first venture into Europe as boss, his side found the Luxembourg minnows no easy opponent in the first half of their second qualifying round clash.
However, attacker Sapsford, one of seven new faces in the home line-up, fired in from outside the box in the 47th minute and in the end it was enough to make the difference.
United's appearance in Europe was reward for their fourth-placed finish last season and albeit their lead is slender, they will hope they have enough to progress in the return game next week.
Goodwin's squad had been bolstered by 11 new players and Yevhen Kucherenko, Bert Esselink, Krisztian Keresztes, Sapsford, Iurie Iovu, Isaac Pappoe and Ivan Dolcek all started and, significantly, there were no Scots in the team.
Wing-back Will Ferry captained the Taysiders in the absence of injured defender Ross Graham, recently appointed skipper.
There was healthy crowd inside Tannadice which created a terrific atmosphere, albeit there was hush in the eighth minute when UNA Strassen, who finished 18 points behind champions FC Differdange 03 in their domestic league, almost stole the lead.
Daryl Myre escaped free of the home defence down the left and Kucherenko was lobbed as he raced out of his goal but the ball went wide of the far post.
United should have scored when Sapsford, at the edge of the box, cleverly played in Vicko Sevelj who only had Ozcan to beat but his drive was saved by the diving keeper and the ball flew to safety, with Sevelj minutes later sending a long-distance effort just past the post.
As the Tannadide men stepped up the pressure, Ozcan made a fine save from a Keresztes header following a corner but half time arrived goalless.
However, the home side got the breakthrough two minutes into the second half when Australian striker Sapsford, signed from Western Sydney Wanderers, took a pass from Dolcek, brilliantly turned his defender 25 yards from goal and drilled a low shot past Ozcan.
It was exactly the boost the Taysiders needed and they almost got a second from a Keresztes header, Ozcan acrobatically turning the ball over for a corner that came to nothing.
In the 72nd minute Ozcan pushed an angled-drive a from substitute Owen Stirton on to the post and behind for a corner but again United failed to capitalise.
The visitors sensed there might be something for them in the game going into the final stages and every entry into the United box had the home fans on edge, albeit Tannadice substitute Panutche Camara had a drive cleared away from goal by one of the many white-shirted defenders blocking the goal.
At the other end, in added time, United keeper Kucherenko had to save from Matheus De Souza, otherwise the outcome would have been very different.

Borussia Dortmund have reservations over re-signing Jadon Sancho from Man Utd

Manchester United's plan to sell Jadon Sancho has taken another blow with Borussia Dortmund reportedly getting cold feet over the transfer. Earlier this summer, the winger was one of five United players told they have no future in Ruben Amorim's team. Marcus Rashford has left for Barcelona but the club is struggling to offload Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea and looked set to join them permanently, only for the Blues to pay a £5million penalty to cancel the transfer. Juventus have been linked with the former Three Lions star all summer but it is said they have now cooled their interest, while Dortmund are now considering whether to sign Sancho for a third time. His first spell in Germany, after joining from Manchester City's academy, was a great success, recording 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games, form that lead to the ill-fated £73m move to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old returned on loan for the second-half of the 2023/24 season after his public fallout with Erik ten Hag and helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final. Sancho is willing to slash his wages by half in order to facilitate a move, while United's asking price has fallen to around £17m as they look to cash-in on the forward, whose contract expires next year. While this should make a transfer to Dortmund more financially viable, Sky Sports Germany report that the Bundesliga giants have some reservations over doing a deal. It is said that though they admire Sancho, they are wary of being criticised for a lack of creativity in the transfer market, especially after an underwhelming 2024/25 campaign. Moreover, there are question marks over the player due to him being rejected by both United and Chelsea, despite his obvious talent. More Trending Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has refused to discuss the prospect of signing the 23-cap England star, but sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed it is possibility. '[Sancho] is constantly being linked with us. I understand the desire,' Kehl said. 'We're thinking about it within our possibilities. The conditions have to be right. We will definitely do something, but we're limited. 'We have various targets. We have a few days left.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. What Benjamin Sesko said about failed Manchester United transfer

Benjamin Sesko came close to joining Manchester United earlier in his career (Picture: Getty) Manchester United appear to be making significant progress in their transfer pursuit of Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia international was heavily linked with Arsenal earlier in the transfer window but now looks destined to end up at Old Trafford having become the latest centre forward to snub Newcastle United. The Red Devils are in the midst of a rebuild after their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years was compounded by defeat to Tottenham in their all-or-nothing Europa League final. United's misfiring frontline was a major issue and the club are looking to sign a central striker, having brought in forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for what could end up being a combined £133.5million. Ruben Amorim could well end up investing another significant sum on Sesko with Leipzig understood to want €75m guaranteed plus add-ons and percentage of a future sale. United had the chance to sign the 22-year-old considerably less three years ago but Sesko was too far down the line agreeing a deal to remain at RB Salzburg for one more season before completing a €24m move to their sister club. 'The thing is I was not really into that kind of conversation,' he told the Telegraph when asked about United making a late move. 'But I think it was better just to come here.' Expert analysis: Benjamin Sesko Sesko has scored 13 league goals this season (Picture: Getty) It was quite a tough season for Leipzig, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They've been struggling, which reflects on his output, but he was still one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Kai Havertz, he's not at that level. In particular, his passing will need to get a lot better. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner. Rune Gjerulff, German football expert and editor of Bulinews Sesko's possible arrival has raised fresh questions about the future of Rasmus Hojlund who has scored just 14 goals in 62 Premier League appearances. More Trending The 22-year-old has rarely justified the fee paid to Atalanta in 2023 and he has been linked with a summer exit, but the Denmark international wants to stay at Old Trafford. Asked what United have told him about their plans for him this season, Hojlund told reporters in Chicago: 'Nothing so far. 'I think the most important (thing) for me is to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we'll see what happens. 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot whatever happens.'
