Kerala Public Works minister Riyas lashes out at Opposition over NH 66 allegations
KOZHIKODE: Dismissing Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan's allegations regarding the improper construction of NH 66 as politically motivated, Public Works Minister Mohamed Riyas has said the remarks were rooted in electoral insecurity, particularly with M Swaraj being fielded as the LDF candidate in Nilambur.
'The arrival of a strong LDF candidate like M Swaraj has clearly unsettled the opposition leader. That's why he's raising his voice and throwing around baseless allegations,' Riyas told reporters in Kozhikode on Sunday.
He hinted that the opposition's sudden focus on national highway issues is an attempt to deflect attention from internal setbacks and the Congress party's questionable alliances.
'Those who speak about a CPM-BJP nexus should first explain what action they took in Thrissur, where it was the Congress that helped the lotus bloom. Who truly worked behind the scenes,' Riyas asked.
Addressing the allegations regarding flaws in highway construction, the minister said, 'If any construction defect is found, we will definitely take action. But let's be clear, the responsibility for the construction lies with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), not the state government.'

Ludhiana: Byelection candidate of the Congress, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, on Tuesday accused Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann of making a communally insensitive "one nation, one husband" remark that mocked Hindu traditions. Ashu said the comment was made in jest while referring to 'sindoor', the sacred vermilion worn traditionally by Hindu women and used in religious ceremonies across the country. Sindoor is also the name of India's paused counter-terrorist offensive against Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. "It has become a fashion to mock Hindu customs and rituals, and CM Mann has proven no exception," Ashu told reporters, calling the remark "outrageous and blasphemous". He added that 'sindoor' is not only a symbol of marriage for women but is also applied to idols of Hanuman and as a devotional 'tilak' on the foreheads of many Hindus. "These traditions are deeply sacred. Insulting these hurts the sentiments of crores of Hindus nationwide," the Congress candidate said. Ashu demanded that Mann issued an unconditional public apology, saying that leaders should show sensitivity toward religious practices rather than ridicule those. Lucky Bansal joins Aam Aadmi Party along with associates in Ludhiana.
Ludhiana: In a significant political defection ahead of the Ludhiana West byelection, Lucky Bansal, a close associate of Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday along with several supporters. Bansal, a prominent figure from Ward Number 63, was welcomed into the party by Punjab AAP working president Amansher Singh Shery Kalsi at a public event attended by MLAs Ashok Parashar Pappi, Kuljit Randhawa, Kulwant Sidhu, and senior party member Sharanpal Makkar. Among those who joined Bansal in switching allegiance were Kapil Gupta, Sonia Gupta, Sonu Nagpal, Kapila, Dr Siddharth, and a dozen-odd others. Kalsi said the group had decided to break ranks with the Congress due to growing dissatisfaction with Ashu's leadership style and working methods. Land-pooling debate heats up On the sidelines of the induction, Kalsi also addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the Punjab govt's land pooling policy. He took a swipe at Shiromani Akali Dal leaders, claiming their opposition stemmed from losing control over lucrative land dealings. "Only Akali leaders are upset because their land mafia networks are no longer benefiting. Farmers have no issue with the policy — it ensures land ownership and happens only with their consent," Kalsi said. He added that under the new scheme, farmers will receive 1,000 square yards of residential and 200 square yards of commercial land for each acquired acre, with values projected to quadruple. In addition, farmers are set to receive ₹30,000 for each acre annually for the three-year development period.
