Government 'cannot mark own homework on Grenfell'
In a letter to Housing Secretary Angela Rayner the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee urged independent oversight of progress on building safety.
Members branded it "completely unacceptable" that survivors and next of kin of the 72 people who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower disaster "are still awaiting justice for that terrible day".
Building safety minister Alex Norris told the committee last month that the government had promised "quarterly reporting" on its website and annual scrutiny in the House of Commons.
Campaigners on a range of scandals, including the Grenfell fire and infected blood victims, have previously called for a national oversight mechanism - an independent public body - to be put in place, responsible for collating, analysing and following up on recommendations from public inquiries.
They have argued that, without such a body in place, governments can delay the implementation of, or even ignore entirely, recommendations from public inquiries.
Backing this call, the committee told ministers: "The clearest, most consistent message we heard in our inquiry was that the government must now be held to account for implementing these recommendations.
"We therefore endorse witness calls for the design and implementation of an independent mechanism to ensure that the government is held to account going forward and is not left marking its own homework."

Florence Eshalomi, the MP for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green who sits on the housing committee, said survivors and next of kin wanted to see government action "at a pace".
"The sense from them was that so much time had been lost and yet nothing had moved on considerably," she told BBC London.
"What we are asking is there should be a national oversight mechanism, similar to what's been proposed with Hillsborough, to effectively monitor the different stages of implementation and looking at those recommendations so that we can all track the progress."
Appearing before the committee last month, Mr Norris said that, while he recognised the call for an oversight mechanism from campaigners who have been the victims of "scandal and failure of the British state", he "can't make that commitment".
He said: "That's a Cabinet Office-run process. I've made the commitment I've made in line with what we published in the inquiry on the publicly available information. The work is ongoing across government on the national oversight mechanism more generally."
The committee said an independent oversight mechanism would "reduce the risk of future governments repeating the catastrophic mistakes which have historically led to state-related deaths, from Hillsborough, to the infected blood scandal, to the Grenfell Tower fire itself".
Elsewhere in their letter, the MPs also demanded an urgent review of the decision to mandate sprinkler installation in new care homes but not existing ones, and that sufficient funding was provided to ensure all disabled residents in high-rise buildings could have Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans.
A government spokesperson said: "The Grenfell Tower tragedy claimed 72 innocent lives in a disaster that should never have happened.
"We are acting on all of the Inquiry's findings, working closely with industry, local authorities and the bereaved, survivors and residents, and have committed to updating on progress regularly.
"We have also committed to introducing a more robust system to improve the transparency, accessibility and scrutiny of inquiry recommendations received by government."

Instead, they were greeted by Trump standing alongside Stephen Moore, a right-wing television commentator and economist who the president had tried — and failed — to put on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors during his first term. Trump described Moore, whose nomination six years ago faced bipartisan opposition because economic experts — and senators — found him manifestly unqualified to serve on the Fed's board, as 'one of the most highly respected economists' and turned the floor over to him. Moore told reporters he'd called Trump to buck him up after he fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics last week by showing him data purporting to prove that BLS 'overestimated job creation by 1.5 million jobs' during the final two years of former president Joe Biden's term. 'That's a gigantic error,' Moore said, at which point Trump chimed in to claim that the nonpartisan agency's revisions to previously released jobs data — a common practice when the bureau receives more updated information — was 'not an error' because it was meant to benefit Democrats by making Republican presidents such as himself look bad. 'You may well be right. But even if it wasn't purposefully, it's incompetence,' Moore said. Continuing, the Heritage Foundation economist went on to present a series of charts touting economic data from Trump's first term favorably compared to Biden's four years in office. In one such chart, he claimed Trump's prior administration 'gained 10 times more income for the average family than Joe Biden' over his first four years in the White House. The bizarre presentation came as the massive import taxes ordered by Trump as part of his effort to force restoring of manufacturing across a broad range of industries took effect. The global tariffs, ranging from 10 to 50 percent, have ignited fear among consumers, companies, and investors about potential price hikes. Everyday items ranging from coffee to Toyotas, home furnishings to Gap jeans, are expected to become more expensive as companies adjust their prices to counteract the impact of tariffs. While the president has asked companies to absorb any increases in costs, many cannot forever. Even luxury items such as British-Indian Range Rovers, French wines, or Swiss watches by Rolex or Omega are likely to face prices hikes as they navigate 10 percent, 15 percent, and 39 percent tariffs, respectively. While Trump wants tariffs to promote domestic production and purchasing, Americans will most likely bear the cost. Economic experts agree that sweeping tariffs on goods from countries could lead to supply chain issues, price spikes, or even inflation.

Netanyahu says Israel intends to take over Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that the Israeli military intends to take over the war-torn Gaza Strip, arguing it was necessary to do so for his country's security. The Israeli leader, in an interview with Fox News, said the takeover of Gaza is intended to 'assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza and to pass it to civilian governance that is not Hamas and not anyone advocating the destruction of Israel.' Netanyahu insisted any Israeli takeover would not be permanent, saying it could be handed over to 'Arab forces' at some point. 'We want to have a security perimeter. We don't want to govern it. We don't want to be there as a governing body. We want to hand it over to Arab forces that will govern it properly without threatening us and giving Gazans a good life,' Netanyahu told host Bill Hemmer. 'That's not possible with Hamas.' Netanyahu's remarks came ahead of the Thursday Israel security cabinet meeting, where the expanded military operation is planned to be discussed. To vote in Tampa's District 5 special election, register by August 11
The race to fill the vacant District 5 Tampa City Council seat is fast approaching. If you want to cast a ballot in the upcoming special election, set for Sept. 9, you must register by the end of the day on Monday, Aug. 11. Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer called the election in June after the sudden death of former council member Gwen Henderson. The District 5 seat serves downtown, East Tampa, Ybor City and parts of West Tampa. Only residents of the district are eligible to vote. To check your registration or district, or to update your information, visit the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections website or contact the county elections office. You can also verify your registration on the state's voter website. Early voting will take place Sept. 4 through Sept. 7. You can vote in person or drop off a vote-by-mail ballot at the C.
