New report casts doubt on revival of Quebec LNG project
Investors for Paris Compliance says demand for LNG in Europe dropped by 18 per cent between 2022 and 2024, and Canadian exports would have a hard time competing in Asian markets.
A report published this morning says gas production is expected to grow by 40 per cent from 2024 to 2028, driven by projects in the United States and Qatar, and demand is not expected to keep pace.
A project to transport natural gas from Western Canada to an export terminal in Quebec was cancelled in 2021 due to environmental risks and public opposition, but Quebec Premier François Legault has recently opened the door to pipeline development in the province.
However, the advocacy group says inflation could balloon the project's price tag to more than $33 billion, and public money would likely be required.
The group says there are better ways to stimulate the Canadian economy, including integrating provincial electricity grids and mining critical minerals.

Canadians are holding more cash in their wallets, Bank of Canada finds
OTTAWA — A new survey from the Bank of Canada shows Canadians are keeping more cash in their wallets in an increasingly digital world. The central bank says its 2024 survey on payment methods show Canadians kept an average of $156 in cash on hand, $16 more than in 2023. The survey done in partnership with Ipsos shows customers are using ATMs and bank branches more often and also taking more cash out per withdrawal. Those surveyed suggest around 20 per cent of their purchases were made via cash. While the use of cash was on a steady decline heading into the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bank of Canada says those figures have been resilient over recent years. Mobile payments are meanwhile gaining traction, accounting for almost five per cent of purchases in 2024, up a couple of percentage points from a year earlier. Air Canada cancels flights over strike threat
Air Canada began cancelling flights on Thursday after receiving a strike notice from the flight attendants' union, warning all operations could be shut down by Saturday. The airline that transports about 130,000 passengers daily announced this week that negotiations on a new collective agreement with its 10,000 flight attendants had reached an "impasse." Chief operating officer Mark Nasr told reporters Thursday that the airline had begun "a gradual suspension of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations." Without a deal, "all flights will be paused by Saturday early morning," he said. In addition to demanding a wage increase, the union has argued flight attendants are not compensated for work on the ground, including during the boarding process. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has dismissed Air Canada's latest offer as "below inflation (and) below market value." CUPE issued a 72-hour strike notice at 12:01 am (0401 GMT) Wednesday, meaning the labor action could begin one minute past midnight on Saturday. Air Canada maintains its offers have been fair. CUPE rejected a request to settle outstanding issues through arbitration. Air Canada's head of public affairs Arielle Meloul-Wechsler said the union's approach to recent negotiations has been "superficial," in a press conference interrupted by more than a dozen flight attendant protesters. Federal labor minister Patty Hajdu said the dispute was causing widespread "anxiety" and urged both sides "to come back to the bargaining table and get this done now." Air Canada, the country's largest airline, flies to 65 countries and operates nonstop service to 180 cities. gen/bs/sst Solve the daily Crossword
