Bangladeshis with long-term illegal stay detained in Ops Noda
KUALA LUMPUR: Three Bangladeshi men were among eight individuals, aged between 24 and 43, detained during Ops Noda at six entertainment outlets around the federal capital early this morning.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the trio did not possess valid travel documents and are believed to have been living illegally in Malaysia for about eight years.
'This is their third visit to the entertainment outlets as customers,' he said in a statement today.
The five others detained in the operation, which began at 2 am, comprised a local man, two Indian nationals, a Pakistani man and an Indonesian woman.
Rusdi said all detainees have been handed over to the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters for further action, with the foreigners being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.
The local man, who manages one of the clubs, is being investigated under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Rusdi added that all six Bollywood-themed outlets operate daily from around 5 pm or 9 pm until 5 am.
'Investigations found that most patrons were Indian and Bangladeshi nationals, while workers earned an estimated monthly income of between RM1,800 and RM2,000,' he said, adding that all outlets held valid operating licences.

Bollywood-themed nightclub in KL mall raided
KUALA LUMPUR: A Bollywood-themed nightclub located in a run-down shopping mall along Jalan Munshi Abdullah was raided by police earlier today. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the raid, conducted by the Crime Investigation Division (D7) from the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, involved six entertainment premises within the same building, where 95 individuals were inspected. Eight people were arrested for offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid documents, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for working without a permit. "The arrests involved seven men - three Bangladeshis, three Indians, and one Pakistani – as well as one Indonesian woman. "All those arrested, aged between 28 and 43, were taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for further action," he said. Harian Metro, which followed the raid codenamed Op Noda at 2am, found at least one Bollywood-style entertainment venue on each floor of the six-storey building. The nightclub is believed to be a popular spot among tourists, locals, and workers from Bangladesh and India. The premises employed women from Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan as dancers dressed in saree to attract customers. Malaysian women were also employed, reportedly earning RM200 per night.

Local councillor charged with raping woman at laundrette
KOTA BARU: A local authority councillor was charged at the Sessions Court here today with raping a 29-year-old woman late last month. Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, was charged before judge Zulkifli Abdullah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. He is accused of raping the woman at a laundrette in Kuala Krai about 2pm on May 29. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein. Jaya pleaded not guilty to the charge. Kamarul proposed bail be set at RM30,000 with additional conditions, including a warning not to disturb the victim. Ariff requested that bail be set at RM15,000, citing his client's responsibilities as a leader in the Indian community and the fact that he has 12 children, including stepchildren. The court allowed bail at RM15,000 with two sureties and fixed July 15 for mention. The accused was also ordered to report to the nearest police station once every two months.

85 foreign GROs arrested in Kuantan
KUANTAN: The Pahang Immigration Department detained 85 foreign women suspected of working as guest relations officers (GROs) during a raid on six entertainment outlets along Jalan Gambut here early this morning. Its director Nursafariza Ihsan said 14 foreign men working as waiters at the premises were also detained during the operation, which began at about 1am. She said the women comprised 81 Thai nationals and four from Laos. Also detained were 12 Bangladeshi men, along with one man each from Yemen and China. "They committed various offences, with most of them found to have abused their work permits. Many held permits for the construction and cleaning sectors. "However, they were working as GROs and waiters at the entertainment outlets," she said when met today. Nursafariza added that the Immigration Department would summon the six business owners to assist in investigations. She said all six outlets had previously been raided and action taken, but continued to flout the law. "A large number of foreigners were arrested, even though inspections are regularly carried out at these entertainment centres. "It appears the operators are not afraid of the consequences," she said. All those detained have been taken to the Kemayan Immigration Detention Depot in Bera. They are being investigated under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 and Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
