India vs England 2025 1st Test: It's a 'shame' not to play against Virat Kohli, says captain Ben Stokes

It seems that India vs England five-match series has lost a lot of it's sheen over the last month. The sudden Test retirements of Rohit Sharma followed by that of Virat Kohli has definitely taken away a lot of star power from the series which begins the new WTC 2025-27 cycle for Team India.
Indians will be led by a new skipper in Shubman Gill and his English counterpart Ben Stokes believes it's a 'shame' that Kohli will be missing from this crucial series. Kohli announced his Test retirement last month, few days after his longtime India teammate and Test skipper Rohit Sharma too decided to call it a day, leaving the BCCI no option but to send a team in transition to the UK under the captaincy of Gill.
In a video released by England Cricket, Stokes reflected on what India will miss following Kohli's retirement. 'What India will miss will be his fighting spirit out in the game, his competitiveness, and his desire to win,' Stokes said.

'He has made number 18 his, hasn't he? It'll be a bit weird not seeing number 18 on the back of anyone of any Indian shirt, but he has been class for them for a long period of time.'
Kohli bid adieu from Test cricket with a phenomenal record, just shy of scoring 10,000 runs – becoming only the 4th Indian batter ever to achieve this feat after Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. The former India captain tallied 9230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85 with 30 centuries and 31 fifties.
Stokes, who has also expressed his preference for the five-day game, said he texted Kohli after the latter announced his retirement.
'I did text him, saying it's going to be a shame not to play against him because I love playing against Virat. We both love playing against each other because we have that same mindset when we are out in the field — that it's a battle,' Stokes said.
Kohli was also India's most-successful Test skipper with 40 wins in 68 Test matches. He was instrumental in Team India drawing the last five-match series against England 2-2.
The first Test between India and England will get underway at Headingley, Leeds on Friday.

‘We create our own reality and are Test champions now': South Africa coach Shukri Conrad
South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has stated that the team's triumph in the World Test Championship final shows that they are as good as any team in the world in the longest format of the game even if they may not have the financial might. South Africa beat defending champions Australia by six wickets at a time when their Test future was becoming a topic of conversation. 'If you have a Test team that is strong and plays regularly, that has spin-offs for the other formats,' Conrad told reporters. 'When you have a good test team, you'll have good teams in (white ball cricket) because a good player is a good player.' South Africa were considered the underdogs ahead of the final, largely due to Australia's pedigree to win big titles and their own rather infamous record in big matches of tournaments. Their victory ended a nearly three-decade trophy drought despite the country producing some all-time greats in the intervening period. 'We don't feel like underdogs and we believe we are one of the top teams in the world,' said Conrad. 'We may not have played Australia and England in the league phase (of the World Test Championship) but we played Australia in the final and would not have had it any other way. 'We feel we belong at the main table. (Being underdogs) was never a conversation in our team meetings. Everyone dubbed Australia as favourites, perhaps on the back of their experience more than anything else. But we create our own reality and are the test champions now,' he said. The Cape Town international airport was packed to the rafters for three tiers as Temba Bavuma's Proteas landed home after winning the World Test Championship. In a chaotic reception, the trophy-winning South Africans were stopped every few metres as Marco Jansen signed every single autograph request and 'OH Temba Bavuma' choruses rung with the whole airport joining in after the cricket team broke the dark spell of 27 years.

Tilak Varma Joins Hampshire For County Championship 2025: Four-Match Red-Ball Stint
Hyderabad-born Indian batting talent Tilak Varma has signed with Hampshire for a four-match spell in the ongoing Rothesay County Championship Division One. The 22-year-old left-hander will be available for Hampshire's next four red-ball fixtures, beginning with their away clash against Essex at Chelmsford, scheduled from June 22–25. Hailed as one of India's most promising young batters, Varma has already made significant strides on the international stage, particularly in T20 cricket. He has represented India in 29 matches, including 25 T20Is, scoring 749 runs with an impressive average of 49.93, currently the second-highest in men's T20Is and the best among batters from ICC full-member nations. His T20I resume features two centuries, both in back-to-back innings against South Africa in November 2024, and three fifties, including a superb 72 against England earlier this year. Though renowned for his aggressive stroke play in the shortest format, Varma also boasts a strong First-Class record. In 18 red-ball matches, he has amassed over 1200 runs, averaging 50.16, with five centuries and four fifties to his name. His red-ball experience includes appearances in the Duleep Trophy for India A and two matches against England Lions in early 2024. Tilak began his T20 career in 2019 and was picked up by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2022 IPL season. Since then, he has become a key figure for the franchise, scoring nearly 1500 runs in 54 IPL matches, with eight fifties, a strike rate of 144.41, and an average of 37.47. Welcoming Varma to the squad, Giles White, Hampshire's Director of Cricket, stated: 'It's fantastic to have Tilak available for the next four County Championship matches. He's an exciting talent who has already made a big impact on the international stage and in the IPL. We look forward to seeing what he can do for Hampshire this summer.' Hampshire currently sit seventh in the Division One table, following a strong 2024 season that saw them finish second overall, their best result since 2005. Fans will get their first look at Tilak Varma in county whites during Hampshire's match against Essex at Chelmsford from June 22–25, followed by his home debut against Worcestershire from June 29–July 2.
