Marsh ton powers Lucknow to IPL upset over Gujarat

Khaleej Times22-05-2025
Mitchell Marsh struck his first Indian Premier League century as Lucknow Super Giants pulled off an upset 33-run win against table-toppers Gujarat Titans on Thursday.
Marsh smashed 117 off 64 balls studded with 10 fours and eight sixes to help Lucknow post a formidable 235-2 off 20 overs.
Gujarat, who have already qualified for the playoffs, could only make 202-9 in reply at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
"We gave 15-20 runs extra. If we'd stopped them at 210-220 it would've been better, that was a huge difference," said Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill.
"Getting momentum back will be key in the next game."
Lucknow were playing for pride after being eliminated from the playoffs.
Gujarat lost in-form opener and the tournament's highest run-getter Sai Sudharsan for 21, caught by Aiden Markram off Will O'Rourke, who ended with figures of 3-27.
Sudharsan's opening partner Gill looked in good touch before he was caught in the deep by Abdul Samad off Avesh Khan for 35.
Jos Buttler (33) tried to steady the innings but was dismissed by Akash Singh in the 10th over.
Shahrukh Khan (57) and Sherfane Rutherford (38) revived hopes of a comeback but O'Rourke took two wickets in the 17th over to seal Gujarat's fate.
"We had a lot of fun out there, T20 is fickle," said O'Rourke.
Earlier, Marsh combined with Markram to give Lucknow a steady start, putting on 91 runs for the opening wicket after Gujarat won the toss and elected to bowl.
Markram (36) hit fellow South African Kagiso Rabada for two sixes in a row before being caught by Shahrukh near the boundary off Sai Kishore.
Marsh continued his onslaught at the other end, hitting Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan for 25 runs in his first over of the game.
The right-hander, who raced to his century off just 56 balls, was finally caught by a diving Rutherford off paceman Arshad Khan for 117.
Nicholas Pooran also impressed, making an unbeaten 56 runs off 27 balls with four fours and five sixes.
Lucknow's struggling skipper Rishabh Pant made 16 not out.
The IPL resumed last Saturday after being paused due to a deadly conflict between India and Pakistan, forcing overseas players to revisit their season plans.

Teenage tearaway Maphaka announces himself against Australia

Nineteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka claimed a career-best 4/20, combining raw pace with fearless intent to give the Proteas plenty to cheer in a close contest against Australia, where they fell short in their pursuit of 179. Maphaka struck with the crucial wickets of Tim David and Mitchell Owen, alongside tailenders Adam Zampa and Ben Dwarshuis. On Sunday, Maphaka's intent was clear from his fourth delivery, when he sent Mitch Owen's off stump cartwheeling with a 144kph rocket, having spotted the batter's leg-side shuffle and denying him room to free his arms. He was equally impressive against Australia's in-form power-hitter Tim David. In 11 deliveries to the right-hander, Maphaka conceded only 14 runs – the best return of any South African bowler – and removed him in the second-last over, caught in the deep. Maphaka engaged in a verbal exchange with David, who is a decade older, something teammate Ryan Rickelton said was typical of the young quick. "He's quite a fiery character," Rickelton told reporters after the game. "(But) he's very relaxed, very quiet in the change room. "He had a bit of a go at Tim (David) there, but he's very competitive. "He backs his ability which is great. It's cool to see a young guy stand up to Australia in their backyard. It's very promising for South African cricket. "He's quite a relaxed guy in the change room but when he crosses that line, he's got a bit of white-line fever, which is quite exciting for us." Maphaka also shone in the field at Marrara Stadium, taking two sharp catches in the Powerplay, both coming off Kagiso Rabada. The first, to remove Travis Head at short third, came after a chance had gone down at point. The second required composure, with Mitch Marsh's attempted leg-side heave hanging in the Darwin night sky for six seconds before settling safely in Maphaka's hands. The left-arm pacer has been rapid since bursting onto the global stage at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2024, where he was named Player of the Tournament. The award was handed out on the back of an extraordinary haul of 21 wickets from six games at an average of just 9.71, despite being only 17 years old at the time. The unstoppable Kwena Maphaka | U19 World Cup wicket compilation His dominance with the ball helped propel South Africa to the knockout stages and caught the attention of franchises worldwide, earning him an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians in 2024 before he had even played senior international cricket, following which Rajasthan Royals snapped him up in 2025. His South Africa debut came soon after and in his maiden ODI appearance against Pakistan in December 2024, he clocked in at 151kph. Just a fortnight later, he became South Africa's youngest Test debutant at 18 years and 270 days. Maphaka has played in two Tests and as many ODIs, with nine more T20I outings to his name, yielding three, five and 10 wickets respectively in his short career so far. With his 20th birthday still eight months away, Maphaka looks certain to be a key figure for South Africa at next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The second T20I between Australia and South Africa is set for Tuesday, 11th August in Darwin.

Virat Kohli gears up for Australia ODIs amid retirement speculations

In what seems to be an exciting development for fans, star Indian batter Virat Kohli posted a picture with Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Amin after what seemed be like a practice session. Kohli took to his Instagram to post a picture with Naeem and captioned it, "Thanks for helping out with the hit brother. Always lovely to see you." This could very well be a sign that Kohli, who retired from Tests and T20Is, is gearing up for a season of ODI cricket. From October 19 onwards, India will tour Australia for a three-ODI and five-T20I series. Fans could get to see the 'King' back in action on October 19 at Perth's Optus Stadium, with two more matches scheduled for Adelaide (October 23) and Sydney (October 25). The social media post brought a sense of relief to fans after Indian media reported that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is likely to have a 'professional' conversation with Kohli, 36, and Rohit Sharma, 38, on their future plans. The two stalwarts are facing a big question mark on their future having retired from T20 and Test cricket. With Kohli and skipper Rohit now only available for ODIs, the Indian selectors are reportedly keen on having a discussion about their plans as the next 50 overs World Cup is still two years away. While Rohit will turn 40 by the time the 2027 ODI World Cup starts in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, Kohli will be 39. The selectors, according to multiple Indian media outlets, are planning to build a team for the future. Rohit and Kohli haven't played a competitive match since the 2025 IPL (Indian Premier League). A report on Dainik Jagran, a prominent Hindi newspaper, even indicated that two superstars could be asked to prove their match fitness for international cricket. "If they wish to prolong their career until 2027, the report revealed, they would need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's domestic List A tournament, to stay match-ready and in contention for selection. The BCCI's domestic participation condition, the report suggested, might prompt the duo to retire," the Hindustan Times wrote, citing a report on Dainik Jagran.

A leap into history: Narredu's bold Ascot debut as Asia win Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

Ascot Racecourse, where legends are made and dreams soar, has witnessed many big moments, but for India's Suraj Narredu, just getting there was already something special. A champion jockey with more than 2,400 wins at home, Suraj was making his debut in the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup with a promise in his back pocket, a long-held dream in his head, and the pride of a racing nation on his shoulders. Days earlier, Narredu had vowed that if he rode a winner, he would perform the iconic Frankie Dettori 'lying dismount', which had been immortalised by the Italian after special victories. It was much more than just a stunt; it was a tribute to the superstar whose 'Magnificent Seven' in 1960 inspired Suraj, a boy in India, to watch the feat on a VHS tape and become a jockey. He confessed he'd never actually done the leap before. 'I was a little bit scared,' he said, 'but I knew I had to do it.' And he did. Guiding Fireblade to a thrilling win in the Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap), Suraj launched debutant Team Asia onto a course toward a historic victory. As the crowd cheered in anticipation, he vaulted from the saddle in a perfect airborne salute; his Ascot dream realised. 'This is absolutely brilliant; it's a dream come true,' Suraj said. 'To ride in Ascot and to have a winner, and to do it for India… It's a long-time dream. I'm glad I could do it today. 'Nothing better than having your family here, lots of well-wishers and friends. It's a proud moment for India, and we showcased our talent, that if given an opportunity, we jockeys are as good as anybody else. 'I would love to come again, every year! Owning Ascot, Making history The day belonged to Team Asia, captained by Suraj and joined by Japanese stars Ryusei Sakai and Mirai Iwata. Their two wins, Suraj's in the Stayers and Sakai's in the Sprint, plus consistent podium finishes, earned them 68 points, edging four-time former champions Europe (67) in one of the tightest contests in the Shergar Cup's 25-year history. Great Britain & Ireland, also a former winner, finished third (62), and Rest of the World, the most successful team in the event with seven triumphs, finished fourth (55). Six winners, One champion Remarkably, each of the six races in the annual team competition was won by a different jockey, with Hugh Bowman, best known for his winning exploits with legendary racehorse Winx, one of the greatest racehorses in history, taking the Silver Saddle for leading rider. Suraj's debut was more than a victory. It was a statement that an Indian rider, far from home, on one of racing's most hallowed stages, could match the best riders in the world. 'As you get older, every winner you ride is of great value,' he said. 'But to do it outside of your comfort zone… It's something else.' Truly something else, Suraj dared to honour his boyhood hero with a bold, mid-air leap, capturing the pure, unbridled joy of a promise fulfilled.
