Can the Boston Celtics unlock the potential of two way wing RJ Luis Jr.? Luis came to the Celtics in an unusual trade that saw Boston deal vet forward Georges Niang into the cap space of the Utah Jazz with two second round draft picks to sweeten the deal, getting a traded player exception for Niang's salary slot and the two way contract of Luis in return.
While the cap savings that generated for the Celtics was the leading news at the moment for most people following the team, Luis Jr. was not just a random throw-in to make the deal legal. Boston's front office evidently is a fan of Luis Jr., and hopes to develop him as one of the team's three two way players.
The man behind the "Nik NBA" YouTube channel put together a clip of his play with an eye to how the Celtics could develop the former St. John's star at the NBA level. Check it out below!

Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta gets 12 points, 6 boards vs. Iceland with Portugal

Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta might have hurt himself recently, but based on how the Portuguese center was playing in a recent FIBA EuroBasket exhibition tilt against the Icelandic National Team, you would probably not know it by watching him on the court. The Lisbon native had himself another solid outing in FIBA friendlies since coming back from an offseason knee injury, this time putting up a very solid 12 points, 6 rebounds, an assist, and as many blocks in just 14 minutes of game time as the Portuguese National Team took on Iceland. He shot 4-of-5 from the floor overall, nailed all four of his attempts from the free throw line, and even took a shot from beyond the arc (but missed). The folks behind the "Nell B" YouTube channel put together a clip of the best of his play from that game. Check it out below to see it for yourself while we wait for preseason tilts to roll around in the fall. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:

NFL still working out the kinks on virtual measurement of first downs

The NFL announced this offseason that it would use state-of-the-art technology to measure first downs, rather than the ancient technology of measuring with a 10-yard chain. But the technology hasn't been perfected yet. After Miami ran up the middle on third-and-1 today in Detroit, the virtual measurement technology was employed to see if it was a first down. But there was a significant delay in getting the first down confirmed, long enough that it really didn't save any time compared to bringing out the chains. At the same time that the virtual measurement was plodding along, YouTube's Sunday Ticket stream of the game briefly went out and was replaced by a 'technical difficulties' screen. It's unclear if those two technological issues were connected. While the virtual measurement is replacing the chains, the spotting of the ball is still done by the officials on the field. So if there's human error in assessing where the ball was when the ball carrier was stopped, the virtual measurement won't fix that. The NFL has partnered with Sony to use its Hawk-Eye technology, which is also used in soccer, tennis and other sports, for its virtual measurements.
