Floating barge on Chocolate Lake scoping out conditions for updated dam
A floating platform appeared near a Halifax swimming spot Tuesday morning, carrying equipment that will be used to collect data for infrastructure upgrades. In a statement, the Halifax Regional Municipality said contractors will be testing and taking samples on Chocolate Lake until Friday evening. The survey of the grounds will run from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m AT. The municipality said the collected data will be used as part of the rehabilitation of the Chocolate Lake dam or the construction of a new dam. Contract bids for the rehabilitation project opened last summer and further decisions about the development will be made after the testing. This work won't have an impact on activities at the lake or access to the site, HRM said in the statement. The beach at the lake remains open with lifeguard supervision depending on the weather. The city said a floating barrier will be around the platform to keep recreational lake users away from the equipment and to protect the environment. The statement said the contractor has the necessary permits and environmental protections in place as required by the provincial Environment Department.

Geotechnical survey work taking place at Halifax's Chocolate Lake
The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is advising residents that geotechnical survey work is taking place at Chocolate Lake from Tuesday to Friday this week. HRM says a contractor will be conducting the geotechnical survey work in support of the future rehabilitation or replacement of the Chocolate Lake Dam. A floating platform with geotechnical survey equipment will be on the lake between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A release from the municipality said, 'A floating barrier will be in place around the platform to ensure a safe distance is maintained from recreational lake users and for environmental protection. The contractor has all relevant permits and environmental protections in place, per requirements from Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change.' No injuries in fire at southeast Calgary building
The Calgary Fire Department was called to a fire in the Foothills Industrial Park at about 9:40 p.m. on July 14, 2025. The Calgary Fire Department is investigating after a late evening fire in the Foothills Industrial Park. At about 9:40 p.m., officials say a fire broke out at 3347 57 Ave. S.E. It was brought under control less than an hour later, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the building. No one was hurt in the fire. Anyone with information, especially photos and video of the fire before CFD's arrival, is asked to contact piofire@
