(summer sown) crops sowing operation early and the forecast helps farmers to prepare themselves for the same.
The advance of monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by its onset over Kerala and is an important indicator characterising the transition from the hot and dry season to the rainy season.

'This year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala to be on May 27 with a model error of ± 4 days,' said the Met department which uses six predictors in the models to make the onset forecast.
IMD has been issuing operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset over Kerala from 2005 onwards. An indigenously developed state-of-the-art statistical model with a model error of ± 4 days is used for the purpose.
Past data shows that the IMD's operational forecasts of the date of monsoon onset over Kerala during the past 20 years (2005-2024) were proved to be correct except in 2015 when the actual onset (June 5) crossed the model error limit of +/- 4 days from the forecast date (May 30).
The Met department uses an indigenously developed state-of-the-art statistical model with a model error of ± 4 days for making the forecast.
Six predictors used by it in the models include minimum temperatures over north-west India; pre-monsoon rainfall peak over south Peninsula; mean sea level pressure over sub-tropical NW Pacific Ocean; outgoing Long wave Radiation (OLR) over south China Sea; lower tropospheric zonal wind over northeast Indian Ocean; and upper tropospheric zonal wind over Indonesia region.
IMD last month predicted 'above normal' monsoon rainfall over the country as a whole this year during the upcoming rainy season (June-September).

A drop in temperature is expected in eastern Rajasthan around June 18-20 due to thunderstorm activities", Sharma to the weather department, the temperatures recorded on Wednesday across different districts of Rajasthan were 48.0 degrees Celsius in Sri Ganganagar, 45.1 degrees Celsius in Bikaner, 44.2 degrees Celsius in Barmer, 45.8 degrees Celsius in Churu, 45.8 degrees Celsius in Phalodi, 44.4 degrees Celsius in Jaipur, and 45.1 degrees Celsius in June 10, Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh issued orange alerts. Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli, and Dholpur issued yellow warnings.

The maximum temperature today is expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius, it said, while the minimum temperature would hover around 28 degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, the temperature in Delhi ranged from 40.9 to 45.0 degrees Celsius across various weather stations. On the heat index crossing 50, the IMD said it depends on temperature and relative humidity and varies throughout the day based on changes in these values. Additionally, the heat index is not validated for Indian conditions, and no official records of it are maintained. Heatwave conditions have been observed in Delhi and at isolated places, the IMD said, adding that while three stations reported heatwave conditions yesterday, only one station – Ayanagar – recorded such conditions today. The IMD bulletin said these temperatures were above normal by three to four degrees Celsius, triggering continued heatwave conditions likely to last until June 12. A red alert – the highest-level warning – advises residents to 'take action," stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and limit outdoor movement, especially during peak afternoon hours. Meanwhile, Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the 'poor" category at 245, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good", 51 and 100 'satisfactory", 101 and 200 'moderate", 201 and 300 'poor", 301 and 400 'very poor", and 401 and 500 'severe". Bengaluru weather: IMD warns of heavy rainfall in the city, across Karnataka
Heavy rainfall has been predicted in Bengaluru with the IMD issuing an alert for the city. On Wednesday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were in the range of 21 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively, with showers in several parts of the city. IMD Scientist N Puviarasan on Wednesday said, "We are giving alerts for heavy rainfall in Bengaluru today and tomorrow. Most places will receive light to moderate rainfall and heavy rain is likely at a few places. We expect extremely heavy rainfall tomorrow over coastal Karnataka and adjoining areas like Shivamogga, Chikmangaluru, Belagavi. Rains will continue for the next 4-5 days. Yellow alert has been issued for Bengaluru and orange alert has been issued for coastal Karnataka.' He said red alert has been issued for Karnataka on Thursday.
