Matheus Cunha wants to be Man Utd's new Wayne Rooney after watching legend on TV every week at his grandma's house

MATHEUS CUNHA hopes he can bring the spirit of Wayne Rooney back to Manchester United.
The £62.5million Brazilian new boy admitted he has always idolised the Red Devils team which won the Champions League back in 2008.

That was around the time United became Cunha's favourite club.
He watched them every week on the television at his grandma's before going outside and playing on his own version of Old Trafford.
And of all the star names in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad back then, it was former England captain Roo who stood out the most for the boy from Brazil.
Cunha, 26, saw some qualities in his new club's 253-goal all-time leading scorer that he could relate to — and hopes he can bring to the modern-day squad.
The former Wolves and Atletico Madrid forward said: 'I remember the whole squad at the time that I started to watch.
'I liked Rooney at the front. Wow! He is someone I have a lot of similar things in my game, as I always give everything.
'He was the No. 10, I remember it on his shirt and everyone loved the skills of the player — but he always brought more.
'He would slide tackle to try to take the ball, this kind of energy inside of him was a big example.'
It may be 17 years ago but Cunha can still name most of the players who helped United overcome Chelsea 6-5 on penalties in Moscow after the Champions League final finished 1-1 after extra-time.
He said: 'Of course, I can mention a lot of the players.

'Cristiano Ronaldo — everyone knows him, it is easy to talk about him. But Ryan Giggs as well.
'I can imagine the team now — it started with Edwin van der Sar in the goal, Rio Ferdinand with Nemanja Vidic the defenders. Paul Scholes, wow, Michael Carrick.
'That team had a big impact on my teenage years.'
Cunha's performances at Molineux and his 17 goals for Wolves last season made him one of the hottest properties in the Premier League this summer.
United might be a hard sell to some players after the dismal season they have just endured.
There will be no European football next term after they limped home in 15th place with just 42 points — their lowest-ever total in Premier League history.
But after following the club since he was a boy growing up in Joao Pessoa the chance to put on the famous red shirt at the real Theatre of Dreams was an opportunity he could not turn down.
Cunha added: 'Maybe outside people don't understand my decision.
'But when you have always dreamed to play here, it's easier to come to this decision.
'It's hard to explain but for me, no one else is like United.
'I know it's been a hard season for everyone, so my decision shows what this club is to me and what I believe this club can be.'
Recalling how he first fell in love with the Red Devils, he revealed: 'My house didn't have the channel to watch the Premier League and my cousin's house didn't have it either.
'He's older than me and supports United — he showed me the way to start watching the Premier League and the need to support United. We could only watch the Premier League at my grandma's house, so we organised to go every weekend.
'When we played together in the street, on the beach, on the gravel, we called those pitches Old Trafford.
'So, wow, it's so hard to be here now thinking about the past — it's very emotional for me.
'It's the most common phrase you can say in this moment but yeah, it's a dream come true for me.
'It's my dream team, the team for me.'
In 2017 Cunha hoped his wish of one day playing for the Red Devils was about to come true when he competed against them for Coritiba in the youth team tournament the Dallas Cup.
He said: 'One of the directors at Coritiba said a director from United had asked about me.
'I was so excited, imagining a dream when I go to United — but after that the conversations stopped.
'But I think this was the start of my journey. Playing against United was a dream. Wow!'
Eight years later, he has finally got his wish and Cunha believes it is coming at the perfect time for him.
And part of the move is down to manager Amorim who Cunha admitted helped convince him to make the switch.
He said: "I have a lot of faith in him. I hope he succeeds in conquering the world like he did in Portugal.
"I'm here to help the team and help him. All our discussions made my decision easier."
There have been flashpoints during his 2½ seasons at Molineux — which started with a five-month loan spell in January 2023 — but now is the time to relax, knowing he has realised his ambition.
He added: 'It's the perfect time to come here and now I need to be calm. I've learned from my mistakes.
'There is not one player who does not come here and think about the glory days, all the times they won the Premier League.
'I want to put this club on top and do everything to help them conquer these things.'

South Africa beat Australia by five wickets to win World Test Championship

LONDON, June 14 (Reuters) - South Africa won the World Test Championship on Saturday, completing a remarkable turnaround to beat Australia by five wickets as they successfully chased down an imposing 282-run target. But it was an edgy finish as they took 27.4 overs to slowly score the 69 runs needed to secure success on the fourth day at Lord's after resuming at 213-2 overnight. In so doing, they completed a successful pursuit of the joint second-highest winning fourth-innings total in test history at the London venue. It was a first major cricket triumph for South Africa, who had earned an unwanted reputation for failure when on the cusp of victory over the last decades in limited overs competitions.

Emma Raducanu's Wimbledon preparations dealt blow after Berlin Open withdrawal

Injury-hit Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Berlin Open, just over a fortnight out from the Wimbledon Championships. In the countdown to the HSBC Championships at Queen's, Raducanu had been managing a back problem, but it resurfaced during her 6-2, 6-4 quarter-final defeat by Zheng Qinwen on Friday. Against the powerful hitting of top seed Zheng, Raducanu had to call a medic to court between sets and had to leave the Andy Murray Arena to have strapping placed on her back. After the loss, Raducanu revealed she needed painkillers to get herself through the match. Prior to the injury, Raducanu had been planning to travel to Berlin, a grass-court tournament featuring nine of the world's top-10 players, in an attempt to boost her rankings for Wimbledon. Raducanu climbed to 36 in the world rankings following her progress to the quarter-finals at Queen's, but only the top 32 will be seeded at Wimbledon. By dropping out of Berlin, Raducanu will need a number of other players to withdraw to be awarded a coveted seeded spot at SW19. However, Telegraph Sport understands she will still be targeting a return to the grass ahead of Wimbledon at Eastbourne, which starts on June 21. When asked about her injury following the defeat to Zheng, Raducanu said: 'It's been lingering for the last few weeks, and I have had back issues before. It's just a vulnerability of mine. I know I need to take good care of it. I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious, but I know it's something that's very annoying.' She added: 'I have been struggling with my back since Strasbourg, and it's just been something that's been on and off. 'I have been managing it pretty well over the last few weeks, but I guess as the week goes on and I have played five matches now, like, even if two were doubles, I think, yeah, it just tests it out. And I just felt it, as the load goes up. They took me off court and taped it to give me some extra stability, and some painkillers.'

Joao Pedro's real transfer preference between Chelsea and Newcastle confirmed

Joao Pedro looks set to leave Brighton this season with a number of clubs having expressed their interest in the Brazilian but it appears that he has already picked his next club Joao Pedro has opened the door to a sensational move to Chelsea despite Newcastle 's growing interest. The Brazilian striker finds himself in the middle of a tug of war between the two clubs this summer. Reports have recently suggested that Newcastle are stepping up their attempts to sign him as Eddie Howe tries to bolster his front-line. Chelsea have also been linked with a £50m move this summer. ‌ And it appears that a switch to Stamford Bridge appeals more to Pedro, if his Brighton teammate Igor Julio is to be believed. The defender has suggested that the forward is prioritising a move to London despite his own attempts to get the former Watford man to sign for Liverpool. ‌ 'Joao Pedro had already told Brighton some time ago that his desire was to leave, seek new things, take the next step,' Igor told Trivela. 'It seems it will be difficult and complicated for him to stay here. 'We have to be honest, the club already knows that. (I'm) very happy for him. He deserves it. He's been here in England for five years and hasn't played for a big team yet. It's his moment, his time, so he can make the best decision and be happy wherever he is. 'He always told me that he really wants to live in London, so I think he will prioritise what comes from there first. 'I told [Pedro] that he has to think about what he wants from his career. In my opinion, if I were going to a 'Big Six' team, I would go to a team that fights for the Premier League, plays in the Champions League and is always in a position to win. 'I would go to a Liverpool team and I think he would fit in perfectly at Liverpool. It's because I've always dreamed of playing for Liverpool and I would go there.' ‌ Would Joao Pedro be a good signing for Chelsea? Share your thoughts in the comments below Pedro, 23, has scored 30 goals for Brighton having signed for the club in a £30m move from Watford two years ago. He still has three years left to run on his contract at the Amex Stadium. Despite reports suggesting he could be on the way out, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler hinted earlier this year that he would have the striker's services to call on next term. He said: 'Joao is still a young player and there's still a lot of potential where he will grow, and I'm sure that he will learn from this and come back strong next season. "I'm really looking forward to seeing him renewed and reinvigorated at his highest peak for us and that's all I will say on this.'
