Popular Houston municipal golf course to be totally reimagined at a price of $30 million
The renovation will be backed by Astros Golf Foundation, with Wolf Point Golf Company hired to handle construction. Plans for a renovation have been discussed for years and were officially announced Aug. 7, and now the details of who is doing the work have been made clear. Construction will begin in September.
Hermann Park Golf Course is a popular if sometimes beaten-up layout south of downtown Houston, adjacent to the Houston Zoo just minutes from the massive Texas Medical Center. The course is part of the larger park, which is managed by the non-profit Hermann Park Conservancy.
The work to the golf course is part of a master plan for the entire park. The golf course project is estimated to cost $30 million and could take two years. The course is currently managed by a private contractor, but management will shift to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
Astros Golf Foundation was founded in 2018 by the baseball team's owner, Jim Crane. The charitable group also backed architect Tom Doak's 2019 renovation of Memorial Park Golf Course, which has since become the site of the PGA Tour's Houston Open.
With the Houston skyline in the distance, the somewhat cramped Hermann Park currently plays to a par of 70 with a maximum length of 6,015 yards, short by modern standards. The facility includes an often packed but short driving range with nets at the far end to stop range balls from rolling into a fairway.
Hermann Park Golf Course was established in 1922 with a design by John Bredemus that has been renovated multiple times as the city has grown up around it.

Schmenk's plan changes everything. The new front nine – which will be lighted for night play – will feature all par-3 holes, while the back nine will stretch to 3,400 yards with a par of 36. The practice area also will be expanded and will include a two-story tee, similar to the facility constructed at Memorial Park Golf Course.
'To withstand the anticipated amount of play, the new layout will contain abundant tee space for golfers of varying skill levels, large softly contoured greens, even two double-greens on the par-3 course, gently rolling fairways and strategically placed hazards while trying to keep the course maintenance friendly,' Schmenk said in a media release announcing the details of the plan. 'The layout will also provide plenty of challenge for the experienced golfer within a routing that preserves the large, old oak trees which should give the course an established, mature feel on opening day.'
Astros Golf Foundation is a major supporter of the nearby Texas Children's Hospital, which has nearly 5 million patient encounters each year. Part of the plan for Hermann Park Golf Course is to support those patients with an adaptive First Tee area that will include artificial turf to accommodate wheelchairs and other special needs.
Wolf Point Golf Company is headed up by Don Mahaffey and his son Ryan. The company was formed after Don Mahaffey built the extremely private Wolf Point Club – now known as TXO – for rancher Al Stanger in Port Lacava, Texas. He also handled the construction work at Memorial Park.
'This is a great project, and we're very proud to be involved,' Don Mahaffey – who will serve as project manager while Ryan leads construction in the field – said in the media release. 'The community aspects of the project are obviously front and center, but perhaps the most interesting part of the plan from a golf-design point of view is that all the ponds on the course are interconnected and designed to capture stormwater for irrigation use. This system is very similar to the one we designed and built at Memorial Park, and that helped reduce potable water use by 50 percent. We are aiming for similar results here.'
Such impacts have been front and center for the Astros Golf Foundation, which has lobbied to start this project for several years.
'In order to make this a financially viable operation for the long-term, we have to significantly expand the driving range, which is a significant revenue generator; we need to increase the size of the ponds in order to create a stormwater recapture and irrigation system that is environmentally friendly; and we need to build a new clubhouse,' Giles Kibbe, president of Astros Golf Foundation, said in the media release. 'Jim Crane's goal is to provide all Houstonians with a great golf experience on a first-class facility at an affordable cost. Jim grew up as a caddie playing municipal courses. So, he wants the average golfer to be able to experience a great course in first-class condition. That's what we did at Memorial Park, and that's what we're going to do at Hermann.'

Do you need a quick explainer before LIV Golf arrives in Michigan? Don't worry, we have you covered. LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed golf tour, is holding its first tournament in Michigan from Friday, Aug. 22, to Sunday, Aug. 24, at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth, Michigan. This will be the final event of LIV's 2025 14-tournament schedule, and it will constitute a team championship. We'll get into what that means in a little bit. LIV features some of the most famous golfers in the world, including Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia and Brooks Koepka. Spanish golfer Jon Rahm just claimed his second-straight individual championship last Sunday, Aug. 17 in Indianapolis, despite not having won a tournament all season. So, if Rahm has already won the tour's title, why is there still one more tournament? Let's explain: How does LIV Golf work? Unlike the PGA Tour, LIV Golf crowns both an individual champion and a team champion through a point system across its 14 international tournaments. LIV's 54 players are spread out among 13 teams of four golfers (with reserve and "wild card" players also on the tour), many of which from countries like Spain, Australia and South Africa. Each three-day tournament features a standard 54 holes, and the player with the lowest score wins the tournament title and 40 points towards their overall total. The second-place finisher from each tournament gets 30 points and third place earns 24, with lower finishers earning a sliding scale of points. The four-person team with the lowest combined score after each tournament also takes home a title, with the first-place team earning 32 points towards their title. The second-place team earns 24 points and the third-place team earns 16 points. LIV crowns an individual champion after its 13th tournament (Rahm won this year's title). Since the Michigan tournament will be its 14th and final event of the 2025 season, we're going to focus on the team tournament format. Team Championship Michigan format While most LIV tournaments use the more common stroke-play format, the Michigan tournament will use a modified match-play format, where teams will face head-to-head in a six-match quarterfinal on day 1, a three-match semifinal on day 2 and a three-team final on day 3. Only 12 of the 13 teams will participate in the final tournament, with the two lowest-seeded teams battling in a play-in match for the chance to compete in the team championship. Friday and Saturday will feature three match-play rounds, with two individual contests and one foursome contest per matchup. Teams will be seeded, with the higher-seeded teams getting to choose their opponents for the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Six winners will move on from Friday's play and three will move on from Saturday's play, with players from losing teams able to continue playing through Saturday and Sunday for prize money allocation. Sunday's event moves from a match play to a stroke-play format, with all four players from the three remaining teams contributing to their team's overall score. Whichever of the three teams with the lowest combined score at the end of the round is declared the winner. So ... where do these teams stand? Maverick McNealy is playing Tour Championship for the first time harboring Ryder Cup hopes
ATLANTA – Maverick McNealy is looking to make a lasting impression at the Tour Championship this week so that U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley has no other choice but to take him as one of his six picks, which will be named on Aug. 27 for the 12-man team that will take on Team Europe at Bethpage Black. McNealy, who finished 10th in the Ryder Cup rankings, could feel the weight of the world on his shoulders this week at East Lake Golf Club given that he's already trying to win the season-ending 30-man championship for the FedEx Cup and a $10 million first prize, but that's not how he looks at it. 'Pressure is a privilege,' said McNealy. 'I've trained my whole life to play good golf under pressure. It just makes the good shots more fun.' McNealy is an interesting study in perseverance. He was the rare No. 1-ranked amateur golfer when he finished at Stanford who debated whether he would turn pro or be a career amateur making his way in the business world. He is the son of Sun Microsystems founder Scott McNealy, and could have pursued his own Silicon Valley dreams. Instead, he chose one of the toughest meritocracies, drafting a nearly 1,300-word explanation he posted on the Stanford athletics website why he would be joining the play-for-pay ranks in 2017. Ever since, it's been a slow but steady climb to his first PGA Tour win at the 2024 RSM Classic in November and a career-best No. 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking earlier this year. (He entered this week at No. 19.) Of course, there have been hills and valleys in his journey, but McNealy never doubted he would get to the winner's circle. His former caddie of seven years, Travis McAlister, has witnessed him grow into the player he has become. 'Everyone wants something fast and everything microwavable. No one wants to bake anything anymore,' McAlister said. 'With Mav we had to bake it a little bit.' McNealy's a throwback in a sense that he is a baked product. He had to get stronger, find the right equipment and tweak his swing with instructor Scott Hamilton, who has turned him into a much better iron player. (McNealy's improved from 159th in 2022-23 to 118th last season to a career-best 44th in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green this year, the first year he's gained strokes in that category.) McNealy has never been afraid of hard work. Stanford coach Conrad Ray recalled on the 'Better Than They Found It' podcast how as a walk-on for the Cardinal, McNealy shadowed Patrick Rodgers and adopted many of his training habits. 'He was like Patrick Rodgers' little puppy dog. He'd watch Patrick practice and he'd watch Patrick think about his game. He'd watch Patrick journal,' Ray said. 'One of the things that I still to this day, I encourage my guys all the time, but very few have the discipline to be able to do that. But very few take the time to journal about their games. And that was like Patrick's, gosh, it was like his superpower in some respects. "And Maverick started doing that. And that just discipline to the process was something that I think was infectious.' McNealy has made sacrifices big and small on his path to becoming an elite player – he'd love to drink more coffee but he's afraid about what it would do to his putting stroke – and qualify for East Lake for the first time in his career, one of seven first-timers in Atlanta. McAlister, for one, is confident he can handle the Ryder Cup pressure. 'He won't be overcome with it,' McAlister said. 'If you're one of the 11 other guys on the Ryder Cup team, you want Mav as your partner and you want Mav putting your golf ball.' McNealy was paired with Bradley at the first two signature events and got his version of a tryout in front of the coach. 'It's right where I wanted to be,' McNealy said, breaking into a smile, 'there's no other pairing I'd rather have had.' Last week's third-place finish at the BMW Championship could go a long way to solidifying McNealy's selection on the team. One more top-5 finish at the Tour Championship likely would make it a no-brainer depending on what some of the other competitors still harboring Ryder Cup dreams do. It's possible that Bradley could come down to choosing whether he should be the first playing captain for Team USA since Arnold Palmer in 1963 or taking McNealy. But McNealy said Bradley should go with his gut feel. 'He's poured his heart and soul into it,' McNealy said. 'I guarantee everyone top to bottom supports whatever move he makes. I'm going to comport myself like I'd be a good asset to the team.'
