Indian students in US at risk of deportation over not declaring job status
Hyderabad: Several Indian students in the US were served notices to prove their employment status, but many have reportedly refrained from responding due to fear of deportation.

These students admitted they were not currently engaged in any authorised employment, making them vulnerable to removal from the country.
The notices, issued by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), require students to respond within strict timelines—typically 15 days—or risk immediate termination of their visa status. However, many students decided against responding.
The trigger was the failure to report employment under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT programme, or exceeding the allowed unemployment window.
Students on F-1 visas are permitted a total of 90 days of unemployment during regular OPT, and an additional 60 days for those under STEM extensions. Breaching this limit, or failing to update employment details in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), is considered a violation of visa rules.
'They asked me to submit a letter from my employer, proof of payroll, and an updated I-983 form within 15 days,' said a 26-year-old tech graduate, currently based in Texas.
'I panicked—I don't have a job. I've applied everywhere, but I haven't heard back. Now I don't know what to do.'
Those who fail to comply may have their SEVIS records terminated, which would mean immediate loss of legal status and the initiation of deportation proceedings. For many students, the threat of removal is not just about immigration—it's financial survival. The average Indian student graduating from a US institution carries an education loan burden ranging between Rs 25 to Rs 45 lakhs.

With no job, no way to repay, and no visa security, the crisis is pushing some to remain in the country unlawfully.
'I don't want to become illegal, but going back means financial ruin,' said a graduate in data analytics from Atlanta. 'My father took out a loan against our house. If I leave now, we're done. How?'
Some have refrained from responding to ICE altogether, fearing their confession of unemployment could speed up removal.
'It's a trap either way,' said a computer science student from Chicago. 'If I say I'm unemployed, they might deport me. If I stay silent, they'll still come after me. But at least I'll have time to figure something out.'
Immigration consultants are advising affected students to warn that silence may worsen their case. 'Not responding can be interpreted as an admission of guilt or non-compliance,' said Ravi Lothumalla, an immigration consultant based in Dallas. 'The right way is to respond honestly and seek reinstatement if possible, but many students don't even know they have that option.'

Maharashtra: Feasibility study on water taxi routes in MMR presented; estimated capital cost Rs 2,500 crore
A techno-economic feasibility study for water taxis in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was presented to the state government on Monday with a plan of operating 10 routes totalling 252 kilometers with an estimated capital cost of Rs 2,500 crore. During the meeting, a discussion was also held on starting additional water taxi routes on Mumbai's Western seafront. Among the 10 routes proposed in the report include, Narangi – Kharwadeswari near Virar (1 km length), Vasai – Mira Bhayandar– Fountain Junction –Gaimukh– Nagale (16 km), Kalher–Kolshet– Mulund–Aeroli– Vashi– DCT – Gateway (50 km ), Gaimukh-Kolshet– Kalher– Mumbra– Kalyan (31 km), New airport-Belapur-Vashi (14 km), Vasai– Marve– Nariman Point (61 km), Borivali– Gorai– Essel world- Marve- Manori (6 km), Rewas- Karanja- Gateway (19 km), Belapur-Gateway-Mandwa (38 km) and Gateway-Elephanta-Nhava (17 km). The report was drafted by the Kochi Water Metro and presented to state Ports Minister Nitesh Rane. According to an official present at the meeting, the government has decided to increase the number of routes before going ahead with the Detailed Project Report (DPR). 'The study does not include key Mumbai routes such as Worli, Juhu and Varsova. It will be added and the DPR of this project will be prepared,' the officer said. Out of these routes, five are projected to be financially viable after 2029 and two would require Viability Gap Funding (VGF) by the government to turn viable. While Rs 2,500 crore was estimated as the capital cost, for the upgrade of existing water transport terminals, the estimated cost is Rs 5 crore per terminal. As per the report, by 2031, the realistic number of trips on these routes will 2.44 lakh while in 2041, it will be 3.42 lakh. Among the civil infrastructure requirements, the study report has listed terminals or jetties with passenger amenities, floating pontoons and gangways, boatyards for vessel maintenance and repairs, night parking and fueling jetties, development of access roads and parking facilities and non-motorised transport (NMT).

CM releases Rs 561 cr relief for over 11,000 families that lost breadwinners
1 2 Ambedkar Nagar: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath released Rs 561.86 crore to 11,690 families who lost their primary breadwinners, under the Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Kalyan Yojana on Monday. While the CM personally handed the amount to beneficiaries in Ambedkar Nagar, the govt released this amount to all beneficiaries across 350 tehsils in the state. E xpressing grief at the deaths, Yogi said his govt would do whatever necessary for farmers and their families. He said that there was no budgetary limitation to the scheme and more beneficiaries will continue to receive assistance as the year progresses. "Earlier, only the farmer was eligible for benefits under this scheme; the policy has been revised and sharecroppers, agricultural labourers, and family members of farmers who fall victim to disasters such as fire, storms, lightning, or floods are also covered under it. 13 criminals nabbed in separate encounters in UP

ADCP, Kashi Zone, T Sarvanan said that after receiving inputs regarding movement of criminals, the Chetganj police in Varanasi alerted Jaitpura police and surrounded them near Dhobahiya Pokhari area in Chowkaghat in the wee hours on Monday. Apart from illegal firearms, the police recovered over Rs 25,000 cash from them. On seeing the cops, the miscreants opened fire at them. When cops retaliated in self-defence, one accused identified as Mohammad Salim (27) suffered a bullet injury in the leg. His two accomplices, Mohammad Jashim and Sonu Kumar, were arrested. Salim and Jashim are natives of Delhi, while Sonu belongs to Bihar. They were on the police radar for deceiving many passengers near the railway station to extort money.
