Amazon hire unable to start job due to this H-1B visa hurdle, Reddit weighs in

Landing a job at Amazon is a dream come true for many techies. But what's the catch here? Securing a U.S. visa. One newly hired Amazon employee recently took to Reddit to share their frustrating visa-related ordeals, that's put their career in question. 'I recently received an offer from Amazon (super grateful for that!), but I'm currently facing an issue with the timing of my H1B transfer,' the candidate wrote. Notably, after getting selected in this year's H-1B lottery, the candidate now faces a technical barrier. Although Amazon offered a start date of 6 August, immigration lawyers have advised against joining on OPT (Optional Practical Training), warning that it could jeopardise their H-1B status down the line. ALSO READ| Just one straight answer cost a Delhi student his US visa, Reddit speculates what went wrong 'Amazon can only file my H1B transfer petition around October 2nd, and I can start as soon as the receipt notice is issued, which usually happens the next day,' the candidate explained. 'I confirmed with an immigration lawyer that I don't need to wait for approval to start — the receipt notice is enough.' The delay in the petition filing means the employee can't start work until October. 'My recruiter said she's working on matching me with a team that can accommodate an October start, since my current team might need someone earlier. I'm hoping they can check with the same team again, but I totally understand if business needs don't allow that,' they added. For many Indian professionals on the H-1B path, this limbo is all too familiar. It's not just about delayed job starts, it's about paused career growth, delayed financial stability, and the weight of life plans that hinge on a single piece of paperwork. The Redditor asked fellow users if Amazon, 'I heard that the Amazon interview result is valid for a year — is that true?' While responses varied, one user suggested, 'Might be worth asking in blind or Amazon employees sub. Depending on your role, you might get matched to another team without interviewing or might need to as well. But I'm sure this is something they've dealt with so should have a plan.' Just stay in touch with the recruiter,' another commented. 'Stay with your current employer on h1b and then move to amazon in Oct. are you approved for l4 or l5? You don't need to interview, but keep a connection with recruiter, he will find you a role in Oct,' one user tried to understand the situation better.

US Cracks Down On Students In Optional Practical Training. Here's Why

A large number of international students in the US, particularly those on Optional Practical Training (OPT), are receiving stern notices from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) warning of possible SEVIS record termination and deportation. The warnings stem from missing or outdated employer information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which tracks students' employment status. OPT rules allow a maximum of 90 days of unemployment over the standard 12-month period, with an additional 60 days for students in the STEM-OPT extension. The ICE letter gives students just 15 days to update their SEVIS records. If employment details remain missing, students could face removal proceedings. A letter reviewed by TOI reads: "Because there is no employer information in your SEVIS record, you are accumulating unemployment days... failure to take corrective action may result in immigration proceedings." The Indian student community is particularly affected. Of the 2.7 lakh Indian students in the US in 2022-23, nearly 69,000 were in OPT programmes. Immigration lawyers are urging students to report job changes, losses, and new employment within 10 days.

'If You Skip Classes...': US Warns Foreign Students Including Indians Of Visa Cancellation

Last Updated: US Embassy in India warns foreign students, including Indians, that skipping classes or leaving programs may lead to visa cancellation and future ineligibility for US visas. At a time when fate of many foreign students hangs in balance due to Trump administration's intensified crackdown on foreign nationals, the United States on Tuesday issue another warning for international students, including from India. According to US Embassy in India, those students who will be found skipping their classes or leaving their program without informing their institute may have to face the risk of cancellation of their visa or may not be able to apply for any future US visa. 'If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues," read the US Embassy in India's official statement. Fresh warning for students comes after the US carried out a major deportation drive earlier this year. Fresh Threat Amid Deportation Drives Previously this month, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had threatened international students on Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas in the US, mentioning that if they fail to report their employment within 90 days of starting their OPT, their legal status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) would be revoked. Amid the mass deportation drive ordered by US President Donald Trump, several institutes in the country also warned foreign students against travelling outside of the US in order to eliminate the risk of their visa cancellation. Additionally, the US Embassy in India had also issued a warning for Indian immigrants earlier this month and warned them of deportation. 'If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future," US Embassy in India had tweeted. US warns Indian, foreign students, threatens visa cancellation for dropping out, skipping classes

Amid the mass deportation row, the United States has issued a fresh warning for Indian and foreign students in the country. As per the latest announcement shared by the US Embassy in India, foreign students found skipping classes or dropping out of their courses may risk losing their visa. 'If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,' reads the official statement. This warning from the US government comes after it carried out a major deportation drive earlier this year. Earlier this month, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had issued warning to international students on Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas in the US, stating that if they fail to report their employment within 90 days of starting their OPT, their legal status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) would be cancelled. Amid the mass deportation drive ordered by US president Donald Trump, several colleges in the US also warned international students against travelling outside of the US in order to eliminate the risk of their visa cancellation.

BioCatch & The Knoble launch toolkit to bolster scam defences

BioCatch and The Knoble have introduced a new toolkit to help financial institutions build a business case for scam prevention measures. The initiative includes a comprehensive resource package called "Measuring the Impact of Authorised Push Payment Scams: A Practical Framework for Financial Institutions." This package provides tools such as a cost-justification calculator, a practical guide for fraud and risk teams, and a presentation deck to assist executives in securing funding for scam-control strategies. The toolkit is designed to assist banks and other financial institutions in quantifying the true financial impact of scams, enabling them to demonstrate the return on investment for proactive scam prevention controls, as well as highlighting the ethical necessity. Emma Campbell, Director of Program Delivery, said, "Scams are not isolated financial crimes; they are deeply connected to human exploitation. Financial institutions play a critical role in disrupting human crime, and this toolkit gives them the tools to build the business case and take action." The increasing sophistication of scams has made them more than just isolated events. Organised criminal groups are often involved in wider criminal activities, including human trafficking and elder exploitation. This connection has added urgency for financial institutions to adopt more robust anti-scam measures. The toolkit draws upon financial data, global benchmarks, and real-world case studies to show how targeted investment in scam prevention can lead to cost savings, improved customer trust, and a reduction in long-term financial risks. The included cost calculator enables stakeholders to quantify scam-related losses, while the practical guide provides instructions for its use. The presentation deck is intended to support fraud leaders in advocating for funding in discussions with senior management. Seth Ruden, BioCatch Senior Global Advisory Director, commented, "Scammers today aren't only lone-wolf, individual operators. Increasingly, scams originate from industrialised complexes staffed in large part by trafficked peoples. The transnational criminal operations behind these scam camps employ a crime-as-a-service business model and harness GenAI-powered tools to improve both the sophistication and success of their attacks. Financial institutions deserve equally sophisticated scam controls. Delaying a proactive response only guarantees a future built on reactive defences." To support adoption of the business case toolkit, BioCatch and The Knoble will hold a webinar to review the toolkit's features, demonstrate the use of the cost calculator, and discuss key strategic considerations for implementing scam control measures following executive buy-in. The toolkit is available exclusively to members through The Knoble's member resource library. BioCatch applies behavioural analytics to monitor digital interactions with banking platforms, helping distinguish legitimate users from criminals by analysing patterns in device use and behaviour. The company works with clients from major global banks and financial institutions to improve fraud detection. The Knoble is a non-profit organisation established in 2019 that unites professionals from financial institutions, law enforcement, regulators, and NGOs to combat human crime, including scams, trafficking, child exploitation, and elder abuse.
