'Avoid getting on a plane and head to these stunning Scottish locations instead'

Daily Record15-07-2025
If you are looking for some stunning locations to explore this year, especially while the UK experiences some gorgeous weather, then you may want to skip getting on a plane and stay in Scotland instead
A man has revealed that for those seeking breathtaking spots to visit this year, particularly during the UK's splendid weather spell, you might want to consider staying grounded and staying in Scotland instead. Chris Lawlor has taken to TikTok to showcase five spectacular Scottish locations that are likely new to many. His video is so compelling, it'll leave you itching to explore each destination.

With many not wanting to go abroad this summer due to our gorgeous weather, there are many places in Scotland where the Scottish native recommend that you visit. They're all certain to take your breath away and leave you wondering why you've never visited before.

1. Whaligoe Steps, Caithness
Describing the site, he mentioned it feels like "something from Game of Thrones" when you're there, a sentiment that's easy to share.

The Whaligoe Steps carve their way down the cliffs just south of Wick in Caithness, situated on Scotland's northeasternmost shoreline.
2. Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Isle of Lewis
Nestled on the Atlantic coast of the Isle of Lewis, Gearrannan Blackhouse Village dates back to the 19th century and features nine meticulously restored traditional blackhouses.
3. Gateway, Edinburgh
He explained: "This is called Gateway, within the grounds of Jupiter Artland".
Gateway emerges as an art piece merged with a fully operational swimming pool and landscaped garden, located at the Jupiter Artland outdoor sculpture park, conceived by artist Joana Vasconcelos.
4. Cramond Island, Edinburgh
He advised: "But to reach Cramond Island, cross the causeway two hours before low tide, walking along a line of concrete pillars during the safe times that are found online".

Cramond Island sits amongst the cluster of islands in the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland, a stone's throw from Edinburgh.
It's crucial that if you do decide to make this journey, you visit during safe hours, otherwise you risk becoming marooned on the island.
5. Forvie Nature Reserve, Aberdeenshire
He described the location as a "haven for wildlife," but cautioned that between April and August, visitors must "take extra care, following signs to protect breeding birds".

Chris also emphasised the importance of giving seals "sufficient space" when encountering them.
Forvie Nature Reserve spans nearly 1,000 hectares of sand dunes situated between the North Sea and the River Ythan estuary in Aberdeenshire.
In the comments section, viewers revealed they had "never heard" of these locations previously, marvelling at their stunning beauty and expressing their desire to visit "ASAP".
"I spent three weeks there and barely scratched the surface. A stunning country," one person gushed.

Holiday hotspot branded 'ghost town' as Brits in Spain say it's 'dead' this July

The summer holidays may be in full swing but this one popular destination in Spain has been abandoned by its usual visitors despite being in peak season As summer reaches its peak, many people are heading off on well-earned holidays to soak up the sun and escape their daily routine. One destination that continues to attract large crowds is Benidorm - a long-time favourite among families and popular with stag and hen parties. ‌ The Spanish resort remains a top choice for Brits thanks to its affordable accommodation, reasonably priced food and drinks and wide range of activities - not forgetting its famous nightlife. The town usually sees its highest number of visitors between June and August. ‌ However, one Brit who relocated to Benidorm has been surprised by how unusually quiet it is this July, the Mirror reports. Harry Poulton, 24, who moved there after his first lads' holiday at 18, described the current atmosphere on the Costa del Sol as being "like a ghost town." ‌ On TikTok, Harry expressed his surprise: "Benidorm is a ghost July?! I've never seen it this quiet. Where is everyone?!". In his video, he appears standing along the main strip and comments: "It's the middle of July, look behind me, it's dead. I'm on the Benidorm strip, there's barely any people, this is crazy." "I cannot believe it, this is the quietest, I've ever seen Benidorm," he continued. One holidaymaker currently in Benidorm, took to the comments to reply: "Currently in Benners. Our first trip here and I was expecting carnage. It's full of families." Another agreed with this, saying: "In Benny now, it's packed with families instead of stags and hens". ‌ Another user, expressed: "We went in July one year [and it] was all Spanish families around the pool." While a fourth chimed in: "No one has any money. Also the price they charge to go in summer is scandalous." Another comment pointed out: "It's like this every July, August. Shocking but in reality, it's too warm and very expensive." With another adding: "The price has gone up, we came two years ago it was coming up as one of the cheapest places to visit, now it's definitely not. However, once you have been you know it's worth every penny." ‌ Yet another person made a statement, saying: "I was there between 8th and 15th and it was a lot quieter than it was two summers ago. The Prices of holidays are going through the roof." Thomas Cook, which evolved from an airline into an online travel agency, suggests that August is the ideal month for a holiday to Benidorm. The company stated: "If you love hot and sunny weather, the best time of year to visit Benidorm would be during August, which is the hottest month in the resort. "The average temperature throughout August is a lovely 25C and has been known to reach around the 30C mark. If you enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea, August is the best month for that too, with the average sea temperature also being a comfortable 25C."

The findings come from Getronics' 2025 Travel Trust Barometer, a UK wide survey that asked 2,000 people about their attitudes toward data security and technology in travel. The research found that Scots are more likely to favour physical boarding passes than people elsewhere in the UK, with 35% of Scottish passengers preferring printed passes compared to just 28% across the rest of the country. Another 23% of Scots said they use both physical and digital passes, highlighting a cautious, belt-and-braces approach to technology. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The survey also shows only 52% of Scots say they feel in control of their personal data when travelling which is the lowest level of confidence anywhere in the UK. Data security in airports The same proportion of Scots (52%) trust airports to keep their information safe, and a majority (61%) believe airports collect more personal information than necessary. Andrew Madigan, client director at Getronics, said the findings highlight a need to build greater public confidence in both airport technology and how personal data is handled. He said: 'Technology is becoming an increasingly central part of the airport experience, and that trend is only set to continue as the industry evolves. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'New technology can be a daunting prospect for all kinds of reasons. Reliability and safety are two key issues, which means airports are having to work hard to keep passengers informed and educated about how planned changes are going to make the air travel experience safer, more convenient and more enjoyable.' Andrew Madigan, client director at Getronics Getronics specialises in building resilient, industry-leading IT security systems that protect mission-critical operations, working with a range of Scottish and UK airports. Andrew added: 'We're seeing growing need to modernise whilst defend against a persistent increase in hacking attempts across the sector. 'Airports need to build that trust, particularly in Scotland, and building a strong digital infrastructure has to sit at the heart of this. 'Technology will continue to evolve, but airports must ensure that protecting personal data evolves with it.'
