Family scammed out of R15K in holiday booking con
This according to the acting chairperson of the Umhlali Policing Forum, Josha Daniel, who says reports of scam-related incidents at Umhlali Saps are on the rise, averaging two per week.
'We are seeing everything from fake pet sales to fraudulent Airbnb-style listings and investment cons,' said Daniel.
'Scammers are using social media and fake websites to trick people into making payments for services that don't exist.'
One recent case in Tinley Manor saw a Hilton family of 13 scammed out of more than R15 000.
According to Michelle Wilkstrom, who made the booking, everything seemed to be above board as she found the accommodation through what she believed to be a reputable platform. After making payment and receiving booking confirmation, her family got ready for the weekend away and made the trip.
'When we arrived at the accommodation on June 14 to book in, there was no caretaker as promised to open,' said Wilkstrom.
The caretaker of a neighbouring property eventually responded to their calls and asked what was happening.
'We advised we were there to book in for the long weekend. He told us there was someone that had been staying there for two weeks already.'
After getting in touch with the legitimate property owner, they said there was no record of the booking. The property owner claimed that their email and banking details had been hacked and that Wilkstrom had dealt with a scammer.
Wilkstrom opened a case of fraud at Hilton Saps and investigation is ongoing.
Daniel urged property owners and letting platforms to strengthen verification processes and advised consumers to be cautious when booking online.
'The property sector, particularly in short-term letting, needs to be vigilant,' he said.
'Owners should regularly audit their digital profiles and ensure booking communications happen through secure, traceable platforms. As consumers, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.'

ACCRA - Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has been taken into custody in Accra as part of a US investigation into his purchase of a Lamborghini, prompting hundreds of fans to protest for his release. Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was interrogated Wednesday in connection with a 2019 Lamborghini Urus that US authorities suspect was purchased with the proceeds of a $4 million fraud case in the United States, Ghana's Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) said in a statement Thursday. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the EOCO's office in Accra Thursday, vowing to remain overnight until the singer is released from custody following hours of interrogation. The probe is part of a wider US fraud probe involving Ghanaian national Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is serving a jail term in the United States, the agency added. The EOCO said the Lamborghini, which had already been seized by Ghanaian authorities earlier this year, is the subject of an order by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky authorising the US government to take possession of the car in Ghana as compensation. The artist arrived at the EOCO on Wednesday afternoon and waited for his lawyer before questioning proceeded into the evening, according to the statement. He was granted bail at 10 million cedis (about $900,000) and has been in custody pending verification of his guarantors, the EOCO said. The EOCO said the singer has not produced purchasing paperwork for the vehicle and told investigators he bought it for $150,000 from the "street", possibly via a WhatsApp contact named "Zak", whose identity he could not provide and whose contact he said he discarded. The agency said it acted on requests from the FBI and the US Department of Justice to track the vehicle and pursue local leads. Outside the EOCO's gates, supporters from the "Shatta Movement" chanted and held up photos of the star's image. "Until our king walks out, we won't move -- even if we sleep here," one fan said.

Democratic alliance MP thanks colleagues for saving his life
Democratic Alliance (DA's) Nicholas Gotsell, a Member of Parliament (MP), expressed his gratitude to his colleagues, Ian Cameron and Lisa-Mare Schickerling for saving his life during a smash-and-grab incident in Philippi, Cape Town, on 19 August. The three were leaving the Philippi South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy following an oversight visit when a brick was thrown at the driver's window, hitting Cameron on the cheek and breaking his teeth. Gotsell was struck on the head leading to severe injuries. MP, thankful he lives to tell his story During a media interview with Newzroom Afrika, Gotsell thanked his colleagues for their support during the violent attack. 'I am grateful to be here to tell the tale. Ian acted with such bravery, and Lisa [helped] following the aftermath. They smashed Ian's window. He started screaming back and fighting back. 'It was a violent attack. I could see the aggression in the attacker's face,' said Gotsell. He passed out, and, when he awoke his head was on his legs. Cameron drove away to safety nearby where law enforcement was alerted. 'After we left, I realised nobody followed to see if we were okay. This made me question what is it that prevents people to respond to such situations? Is it because they are too sensitised to such situations, or are people scared to come forward and help?' Gotsell questioned. Gotsell said it should be politician's jobs to build a police force that people trust in. This would encourage people to come forward and report crimes they witness. He viewed the incident as an attack on oversight, merely because by attacking the people voted to conduct oversight visits, criminals were hampering the building of safer communities. Image: YouTube Screenshot via SABC News Murder-accused Katiso 'KT' Molefe, charged with the killing of Oupa Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody, and his two bodyguards, was denied bail on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court. Magistrate Reneir Boshoff delivered a 12-minute bail judgment where he listed a slew of reasons and concerns why Molefe was denied bail. Molefe is alleged to have plotted the execution-style murder the of DJ Sumbody who was killed on 22 November 22 together with his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. He was murdered following a performance at News Café in Woodmead, Johannesburg. It's alleged Molefe and DJ Sumbody were feuding over a multimillion-rand drug deal around the time the music producer was gunned down. Boshoff cited other pending cases and convictions against Molefe including the killing of Philip Swap in April 2024 and the pending murder case of DJ Sumbody together with three other accused. He further highlighted incidents of drug dealing and fraud committed by the accused. 'It is significant he was convicted of drug trafficking in the UK for the possession of cannabis. He was charged with fraud related to his stay in the UK. 'What is really concerning is that he used a fake passport with an alias, David Tabbor Leita. While this may have happened way back in 2004, it raises concern about what the applicant is capable of,' said Boshoff. Boshoff alluded to Molefe being a flight risk when expressing concern over the large bank deposits into Molefe's business bank account. This, he said, points to a source of income. 'The applicant suggest that the State's case against him is extremely weak and circumstantial by nature. It is true that the evidence against the applicant because of his role in the killings will be distant as he was not physically present during the (killing). The absence of direct evidence does not mean that an inference of guilt can't be deducted,' said Boshoff. The magistrate indicated that contact between Molefe and three other accused in this murder case, via WhatApp and cellphone communication formed part of the evidence in the State's case against Molefe. The magistrate further commented on the allegations by the State of Molefe paying the three accused large sums of cash following DJ Sumbody's murder. 'The cellphone records after these so-called hits between the respective accused are indeed very interesting. Accused one frantically trying to reach the applicant moments after the Sandton hit on DJ Somebody. He made no less than eight calls to the applicant,' said Boshoff. Boshoff also spoke of concerns by the State that witnesses lives may be endangered should Molefe be released on bail. This comes in the wake of messages sent via WhatsApp by Molefe to the other accused's family members when he was initially released on bail. Some of the messages suggested that Molefe could arrange his release from prison. 'Although bail was granted in the High Court regarding the case, this court is of the respectful opinion that a lot has changed since then. The current counts are of a very serious nature and can definitely increase the risk to abscond. Very important, the evidential link between the four accused persons in this case appears to have increased,' said Boshoff. According to the magistrate several facts are taken into consideration when such judgments are made. These include: the freedom of the individual, his right to be innocent until proven guilty and the interest of justice. 'There's also the statutory framework requiring that the accused must on a balance of probabilities show the existence of exceptional circumstances to permit his release on bail,' said Boshoff. In this regard, Molefe has not proven his innocence stated the magistrate. 'Considering all the relevant facts and circumstances, the court makes a value judgment and finds the applicant failed to put exceptional circumstances justifying his release on bail…As I highlighted there are a number of concerning aspects, not only linking the applicant to the crimes, but his circle of influence and capabilities.
