Title: 'This course challenges your sanity' - why Oakmont is toughest US Open test
Content: Iain CarterBBC golf correspondent at Oakmont
Pittsburgh, America's historic steel city also famed for coal mining, is known as a hub for hard industrial labour.
And these qualities extend to its most famed golf course. There are few, if any, tougher more uncompromising tests than Oakmont Country Club, the home of this week's US Open.
This is a place where players have to roll up their sleeves and get on with it despite the golfing environment's stark harshness.
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau summed it up for his legion of YouTube followers when he said: "This course doesn't just challenge your game, it challenges your sanity."
This is the latest in a long line of observations about a course that will stage the US Open for a record 10th time, starting on Thursday. Seven-time major winner Gene Sarazen started the trend when he said Oakmont possesses "all the charm of a sock to the head".
The US Open is meant to be the toughest test and of all the courses that stage the United States' national championship, this appears the toughest. It is the ultimate US Open venue.

Title: Today's tee times
Content: Masters champion Rory McIlroy will play the opening two rounds of this week's US Open alongside European Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose and Shane Lowry.
The trio will start round one from the 10th hole at 12:40 BST on Thursday, 12 June and then tackle the Oakmont Country Club course from hole one in Friday's second round from 18:25.
McIlroy, who ended his major drought by beating Englishman Rose in a play-off to complete the career Grand Slam at Augusta National in April, won his solitary US Open in 2011. Rose claimed his only major title at the 2013 US Open.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is on the opposite side of the draw. He will tee off in Thursday's opening round at 18:25 from the first hole, and 12:40 from the 10th on Friday.
Here are a selection of the early tee-off times on Thursday.

Title: Welcome to the US Open!
Content: Hello golf fans and welcome to the third major of the year and the toughest test of the lot, as the world's best take on the fearsome Oakmont in the 125th US Open.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is the biggest betting favourite to win this since Tiger Woods as he arrives as the US PGA champion in red-hot form, but he has a host of challengers lining up to take him on.
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is his chief opposition, Jon Rahm knows all about winning the US Open and Xander Schauffele is always there or thereabouts.
Scheffler's biggest challenge though will be Oakmont itself, and in particular its thick, gnarly rough that will result in some big numbers and some of the best players in the world being made to look rather foolish.
Let the carnage begin!

Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (shoulder) on IR

August 7 - After Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. exited Monday's practice with a shoulder injury, coach Dan Campbell warned that the second-year player could be out a while "at best." Indeed that is the case, as the Lions placed Rakestraw on injured reserve after he underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday. As a result, the 2024 second-round pick out of Missouri will miss the entire 2025 season. Prior to his procedure, Rakestraw posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown to his Instagram story with the caption, "Road to Be back starts soon." The shoulder injury was yet another setback for the second-year pro, who was already dealing with a chest contusion suffered during the first day of training camp. His rookie campaign, during which he recorded six tackles across eight games, was also shortened by injuries to his ankle and hamstring. --Field Level Media

49ers GM not expecting Brandon Aiyuk to be ready for Week 1

August 7 - The San Francisco 49ers do not expect to have receiver Brandon Aiyuk on the field for the season-opening game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 7. Aiyuk is battling back from a serious right knee injury that included tears to the ACL and MCL. He was injured in Week 7 of last season. San Francisco general manager John Lynch told KNBR on Thursday that Aiyuk is making progress but the team isn't ready to put a date on his return. "There's just steps that you have to continue to hit and I'll continue to say that Brandon is doing very well in his rehab," Lynch said. "Do we have an exact date right now? No. I don't think it'll be Week 1, but hopefully I'm surprised. We'll see -- continue to watch him work his way through his rehab. But we want him fully healthy. "He had a significant injury, so you have to do a significant rehab. He's doing a really good job with that, and we got to continue to do so." Aiyuk was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list prior to training camp. If he is still on the PUP list at the outset of the season, he will be required to miss at least the first four games. Aiyuk, 27, had 25 receptions for 374 yards and no touchdowns over seven games last season after developing into a star over the previous two campaigns. Aiyuk caught a career-high 78 passes for 1,015 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns in 2022, followed by 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards in 2023. Also, rookie running back Jordan James will miss time after injuring a finger earlier this week. "Jordan James broke his finger, so he's getting surgery on that," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "He'll be out a couple of weeks." James was a fifth-round pick in April's draft. He rushed for 2,215 yards and 31 touchdowns in three seasons at Oregon. The 49ers also released veteran cornerback Eli Apple on Thursday, a little more than a week after signing him. --Field Level Media

Patrick Mahomes has the perfect response to shockingly low Madden rating

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes perfectly responded to a oddly low Madden 26 rating of 95, four points below the highest-rated players in the game. Mahomes did not appear fazed by what most would consider a cheap shot, as the three-time Super Bowl MVP retained his rating from Madden 25. He also stayed ranked as the game's QB No 4, with Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen both given the highest rating of 99, and Joe Burrow two points ahead of Mahomes at 95. There is a severe signal-caller drop-off after Mahomes, with Matthew Stafford's 88 being the fifth-highest Madden 26 rating for quarterbacks. 'I like playing Madden, so I would like to be rated higher,' Mahomes said. 'But I've got to play and showcase that stuff on the field. I believe that if I go out there and play the football I want to play, we can get to 99 pretty quickly.' A 95 in Madden would be a dream come true for most NFL players, as only 22 characters have a higher rating. Mahomes is the second-highest-rated Chief, with defensive tackle Chris Jones receiving a 97. The 29-year-old goes up a spot on Kansas City's roster, as he was the No 3 Chief in Madden 25. Travis Kelce falls from the top Chief to No 5 on the team after dropping from a 99 overall to a 93 in Madden 26. Only seven players were given a 99 overall rating, with the Philadelphia Eagles being the lone team with multiple top-rated players. Both running back Saquon Barkley and offensive lineman Lane Johnson received the 99 overall rating.
