Scientists Just Launched the First Quantum Computer Into Space

The world of quantum computing has barged into a new frontier: space.
A tiny quantum computer housed in a satellite is now in orbit around Earth, ScienceNews reports, residing some 330 miles above our planet after being launched aboard a SpaceX rocket last month.
It's a trailblazing experiment intended to test how well these delicate devices can survive the extreme conditions of space, where they could allow satellites to quickly and efficiently perform intense calculations on their own.
The experiment is also a ripe opportunity to put some fundamental physics principles to the test, according to project lead Philip Walter, a physicist at the University of Vienna.
"Being the first here also means we have the duty and privilege to investigate if things operate in the way as we'd be used to on the ground," Walther told ScienceNews.
Built in just eleven days, the idea behind the device was to "shrink a whole quantum laboratory down to the size of a satellite payload," Walter said in a statement before the launch. It's safe to say that they delivered on that premise. At a size befitting its quantum ambitions, the finished device is less than a gallon in volume, weighs just 20 pounds and some change, and will on average use only 10 watts of power, and no more than 30.
The potential — and we stress potential — advantage of using a quantum computer in space is that it can perform "edge computing," or process data directly on the satellite. Otherwise, that data needs to be beamed down to Earth, put through calculations on a ground-based computer, and sent back up, which expends extra time and energy.
Most importantly, they can theoretically perform specific types of calculations faster than classical computers, making them an enticing option in fields such as machine learning. Or at least, that's what they promise to do eventually. This device in particular is a photonic quantum computer, which uses individual photons — the massless particles that make up light — to represent units of information called qubits. A qubit, unlike a classical, electron-based bit, can be a 1 or 0 at the same time using a spooky quantum property known as superposition.
As an added bonus, quantum computers have shown that they can potentially be more energy efficient. That's great news for satellite missions, which operate with extremely tight energy budgets. The fuel they launch with is essentially what they work with.
Quantum computing in space may sound like a no-brainer, then — we've been testing quantum communications up there for years now — but it's important to remember that it still highly experimental tech with a whole lot unrealized potential and few applications outside of a laboratory. Though there have been pretenders to the throne in the past, no one has yet achieved clear "quantum supremacy," a point where a quantum computer can perform calculations that a classical one can't.
One of the biggest issues in the field is that a quantum computer typically require a meticulously controlled environment to function, because even the slightest disturbance can cause a qubit to lose its quantum state, and thus, its information. In space, where there's no protective atmosphere, the computer's electronics are at the mercy of extreme temperature swings and blasts of cosmic radiation.
The good news is that Walter's team has confirmed that its hardware is now operational, he told ScienceNews. Its long-term resilience will have to be borne out, but it's an encouraging start.
Once its work is finished, the satellite will make a controlled re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, where it will meet a fiery — but safe — end. Until then, it'll hopefully keep itself busy by taking images of Earth and crunching the numbers.

New ‘Vulcan' rocket to fly first military mission next week

United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket is scheduled to fly its first military space launch next week. Pending range approval, the mission is slated to lift off Aug. 12 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying Space Force satellites destined for geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles above Earth. The milestone is a long time coming for ULA, the Defense Department's longtime launch provider, which started developing its Vulcan rocket in 2014. The vehicle — which is replacing the company's legacy workhorse, Atlas V — flew two demonstration missions last year and achieved its required military certification from the Space Force in March. ULA and SpaceX are the only companies with rockets certified to fly National Security Space Launch (NSSL) missions. For years, prior to the certification of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, ULA was the sole provider of military launch services. In 2020, SpaceX won a 40% share of those missions slated to fly between fiscal years 2022 and 2027 with ULA maintaining the remaining 60%. In April, the Space Force awarded SpaceX, ULA and national security launch newcomer Blue Origin a combined $13.5 billion for missions that will fly between fiscal years 2027 and 2032. Under the deal, SpaceX will receive $5.9 billion to fly 28 missions, ULA $5.3 billion to launch 19 and Blue Origin $2.3 billion to conduct seven. The Space Force mission set to fly on the rocket next week, USSF-106, was originally set to launch in 2022. After being rescheduled as a Vulcan mission in 2023, the satellites have been grounded for two years as the rocket faced delays. The mission includes an experimental spacecraft built by L3Harris called Navigation Technology Satellite-3, or NTS-3, that will demonstrate capabilities to augment the Space Force's GPS constellation or support a future program. That effort, led by the Air Force Research Laboratory in partnership with Space Systems Command, will test technologies like steerable beams to provide regional coverage, a reprogrammable payload that can receive upgrades in orbit and protections against signal jamming. Once NTS-3 is in orbit, AFRL will experiment with those capabilities over a one-year period, exploring how new satellite configurations could strengthen the Space Force's positioning, navigation and timing, or PNT, capabilities. That could mean integrating new capabilities onto the Space Force's GPS IIIF satellites, which are built by Lockheed Martin, and approaching initial production. The service may also funnel relevant technology into other positioning, navigation and timing programs, including an effort called Resilient GPS, which is meant to augment the larger constellation with a fleet of small, lightweight, lower-cost satellites. NTS-3 is the Air Force Research Laboratory's first major PNT demonstration in nearly a half century. Does the scientific community as a whole share the notion that a newly discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is an alien spacecraft heading to Earth for a "surprise attack" in November 2025? No, that's not true: The NASA website says that it's a comet and that it doesn't pose any risk to Earth. Three astronomers told Lead Stories that, as of this writing, the scientific community overwhelmingly shares this view. The scientist proposing the alien theory said he did so to challenge people to think, while, nevertheless, implying an interest in an influx of government money to fund that line of inquiry. The claim appeared in a post (archived here and here) on TikTok on July 27, 2025, under the following caption: Scientists at Harvard discovered an unknown object headed towards the Earth at 130,000 mph and its 15 miles in diameter and apparently is very unusual and possibly a space craft. #space #aliens The narrator in the video continued: Now they're saying it's going to be here by the end of November. They don't just think it's an object. They think it's a spacecraft coming to attack the Earth. It's called 3I/ATLAS, and they're worried about a surprise attack. This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing: According to the NASA website (archived here), 3I/ATLAS was first discovered on July 1, 2025. The shape of its path, differentiating from orbit around the Sun, allowed astronomers to conclude that it's an interstellar object, the third known of that class. While some of its characteristics are yet to be determined, the scientific community agrees that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, reads the NASA website: ...it has an icy nucleus and coma (a bright cloud of gas and dust surrounding a comet as it approaches the Sun). This is why astronomers categorize it as a comet... The space agency additionally clarifies that, contrary to the posts on social media, 3I/ATLAS poses no danger to Earth: Although the trajectory of the object brings it into the inner solar system, it won't come close to Earth. As the comet 3I/ATLAS journeys through the solar system, it won't come closer than 1.6 au (about 150 million miles, or 240 million kilometers) to our planet. Despite this information being publicly available on a government website, many other posts were trending under the keywords "massive alien mothership approaching Earth": for example, here (archived here and here), here (archived here and here) and here (archived here and here). Some of them, specifically professor Avi Loeb (archived here), of Harvard University's Astronomy Department. Talking to a CBS affiliate (archived here and here) in late July 2025, he implied that the newly discovered object can be anything, including being a technological product of another civilization. On August 1, 2025, Lead Stories contacted Loeb via email to clarify his views. On the same day, he wrote back, suggesting, among other things, that "3I/ATLAS might be an alien probe based on its unusually rare trajectory". Loeb, however, went on to explain the alien theory was a kind of thought experiment, saying: I laid out this possibility in order to encourage observers who are convinced that 3I/ATLAS is a comet to collect as much data as possible in an attempt to prove me wrong... Even if 49 out of the next 50 interstellar objects to be discovered by the Rubin Observatory will turn out to be comets or asteroids, the one outlier of technological origin might change the future of humanity. He also pointed out that a draft version of one of his papers that has yet to undergo a peer review process -- "Is the Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS Alien Technology?" (archived here) -- reads: We strongly emphasize that this paper is largely a pedagogical exercise, with interesting discoveries and strange serendipities, worthy of a record in the scientific literature. By far the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet... At the same time, Loeb, who made similar claims rejected by the scientific community before (archived here), said: Committees of mainstream scientists who decide how to allocate federal funds often resist investments in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence by arguing that it is too risky and might result in wasting taxpayers' money. But if these reviewers were humble enough to ask the taxpayers what they wish to spend their tax money on, they would find the search for extraterrestrial intelligence to be at the top of the priority list. Gatekeeping and ridicule are not the landscape I wished for when I started my scientific career 45 years ago... Earlier, on July 31, 2025, Chris Lintott (archived here), a professor of astrophysics at the University of Oxford, referred to Loeb's theory of alien involvement as "absolute nonsense", continuing: It's a comet, and no danger at all. It's exciting enough we get to study an object that formed before the Sun was born, and there's no need to invent stupid stories to get attention. Two more astronomers told Lead Stories: The existing consensus among the members of the scientific community is that 3I/ATLAS is a comet. Jane Luu (archived here), a professor of astrophysics (archived here) at the University of Oslo, emphasized in a phone conversation with Lead Stories on August 1, 2025, that it's not just her or a few other people but many scientists who are currently studying 3I/ATLAS. She said there is no evidence to support speculations about the nature of 3I/ATLAS: Our observations have shown it's a comet. It doesn't come close to Earth: It's not on a collision course. On August 1, 2025, David Jewitt (archived here), a UCLA professor of astronomy, told Lead Stories via email: I've seen a lot of comets, and all I can say is that 3I looks to me like a comet. When asked to evaluate the potential risks posed by the comet, he said: There's more danger that your toaster oven will explode, assuming you have a toaster oven.
