New TNFA president Shanmugam sets forth his agenda to revive the sport in the State
'Every year, the association's registration is to be renewed with the Registrar of Societies under the Societies Registration Act (1860). This hasn't been done for a few years. Thus, the association is unable to receive grants from the SDAT and AIFF. So, my foremost task is to renew our registration,' he said.
Claiming that the State championships for all age categories, including the senior category, have been discontinued for several years now, he said that he aims to revive them.
'The probables for the Nationals were selected from those tournaments. Around 40 would be selected first, and 20 would then be shortlisted for a 10-15 day camp for the Nationals. I intend to bring that back into practice.
'For instance, the junior (boys and girls) National football championship is to be held from July 10 to 25. For that, the State championships have been planned to be held for boys in Virudhunagar and for girls in Dindigul from June 20 to 27,' he said.
The 62-year-old said that he wants to make it mandatory for the District associations to conduct their annual league, like the Chennai Football Association's senior division league.
'There was this Champions Club Trophy for the District league champions, which has been discontinued for around nine years now. The event helped clubs earn points for entry into the I-League. Consequently, the possibility of our (TN) clubs getting into the I-League has reduced. So, it is to be revived as well,' he added.
Saying that he also intends to revive the premier National tournaments of the past across the State — like the Vittal Trophy and TFA Shield in Chennai and the Rockfort Trophy in Tiruchi — by getting into talks with the original sponsors, he added that there is a Super League Kerala-type 'Tamil Nadu Premier Football League' in the pipeline.
'It will have eight teams and will be played in the home-and-away format.'
He further stated that a four- or five-member advisory committee will be formed, naming two members: the former CFA senior division league club and I-League champion Chennai City FC owner, Rohit Ramesh, and the Viva Chennai FC (CFA senior division) and Gokulam Kerala FC (I-League) owner, Praveen.
Rohit currently also owns a minority stake of the Cambodian Club Angkor Tiger FC.

Brewers look to continue torrid stretch in finale vs. Nationals
The Milwaukee Brewers go for a three-game sweep when they conclude their series against the host Washington Nationals on Sunday. Brewers look to continue torrid stretch in finale vs. Nationals Milwaukee recorded a 16-9 win in the series opener on Friday and an 8-2 decision on Saturday. The club has a combined 40 hits over the last two games, tied for the most in Brewers history over a two-game span . The Brewers, who have won five of six overall, are 20-6 in their last 26 road games and 8-1 in the last nine. They own the best record in baseball and are a season-high 22 games over .500. "My goodness, they're we're firing on all cylinders," Saturday starter Brandon Woodruff said after allowing two runs on one hit over six innings. "It's been fun to be a part of and to watch it, for sure." All-Star rookie right-hander Jacob Misiorowski makes his eighth major league start on Sunday. He will be opposed by rookie right-hander Brad Lord . Last time out, Misiorowski gave up three runs on three hits in four innings against the visiting Chicago Cubs. He struck out seven and walked two. Misiorowski gave up all three runs in the first inning of a game the Brewers rallied to win. He finished his outing by getting 10 straight outs. "Just keep going," Misiorowski said of his mindset after the first inning. "Just trust that the team's going to help me out and they did. It was awesome." Lord makes his third start since returning to the rotation. Last time out, he gave up one run on one hit in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus the host Houston Astros. The Nationals have won both of his starts. Lord threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Brewers over two appearances in July. On Saturday, Christian Yelich had three hits, including a home run, and Brice Turang added two doubles and a single for the Brewers. Yelich had two RBIs, a walk and three runs scored. It was his fifth game of the year with three or more hits and he is 5-for-10 in the series. In seven of nine innings on Saturday, the Brewers' leadoff hitter reached base. Woodruff allowed just two baserunners and Milwaukee is 5-0 this season when he starts. Opponents are hitting just .141 against him. The Nationals, who were held to two hits, fell to 22 games under .500 and are 0-5 against the Brewers this season. "Nothing is going to be given to anyone," interim manager Miguel Cairo said. "So like I said before, you got to come to work. You gotta make sure you do the thing the right way and get good at-bats. Do the little things that make you a good player and a winning player. That's the culture that I'm gonna make." The lone bright spot was Robert Hassell III's two-run homer. It was his second extra-base hit since he was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday. "It was good to see," Hassell said. "I've been working down in Triple-A, and I felt like I've been feeling some stuff, some good stuff. Being able to pull the ball in the air a little bit. So to see it happen one time, hopefully it happens more, but in the first start back, it's nice." First Three Things Khalid Jamil Needs To Do As Indian Football Team Head Coach
Khalid Jamil's appointment as head coach of India's men's football team is historic. Known for his I-League and ISL success, he aims to boost goal-scoring and tactical clarity. Khalid Jamil's appointment as head coach of the Indian men's national football team on Friday marked a historic moment. Not only is he the first Indian to take the role since 2012, but he also steps in at a time when the Blue Tigers urgently need direction, belief, and revival. A highly respected figure in Indian football, Jamil has made his mark in both the I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL). He famously led Aizawl FC to a historic I-League title in 2017 and had impressive stints in the ISL, most notably taking NorthEast United FC to the playoffs in the 2020-21 season and, more recently, guiding Jamshedpur FC to the ISL semi-finals and Kalinga Super Cup final in the 2024-25 season. Jamil's track record in Indian football speaks for itself, and now, with the reins of the national team in his hands, he has an opportunity to shape a new narrative for the Blue Tigers. What Khalid Jamil Needs To Do As Indian Men's Football Team Head Coach? 1 – Get the team scoring goals India's biggest immediate challenge is improving their output in front of goal. The Blue Tigers have not found the net in their last three matches. They played out a goalless draw against Bangladesh in their opening game of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, followed by a narrow 1-0 loss to Hong Kong. They suffered a 2-0 friendly defeat to Thailand in between. Their last goal came in a 3-0 friendly win over the Maldives at home in March, which also remains their only win in the calendar year so far. Under Marquez, India scored five goals across eight matches, finding the net in just three of those games. With key fixtures coming up in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, India will need to rediscover their attacking rhythm. While the team has shown solidity at the back and moments of promise going forward, converting chances and maintaining composure in the final third will be an area Jamil will look to address. His teams in the ISL have often shown a knack for scoring in transition and being clinical with limited opportunities, traits that could serve India well in the months to come. 2 – Get India's AFC Asian Cup qualifiers campaign back on track The AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers are a major focus for the national team, and India have ground to make up. After two games in Group C, the Blue Tigers sit at the bottom of the standings with one point, having drawn against Bangladesh and lost to Hong Kong. The road ahead includes crucial fixtures against Singapore in October, a doubleheader that could prove pivotal to the campaign. Before that, Jamil's first assignment will be the CAFA Nations Cup, where India are set to face Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. These games will serve as valuable preparation not just to build chemistry within the squad, but also to fine-tune systems ahead of the qualifiers. India had previously qualified for back-to-back editions of the AFC Asian Cup for the first time, the second one coming under Igor Stimac, and maintaining that momentum will be key. Jamil's task will be to steady the campaign and put India back in contention for a spot in the continental tournament. 3 – Bring structure and efficiency to India's play One of the biggest tasks for Jamil will be to instil a sense of tactical clarity in the Indian team. Under former head coach Igor Stimac, India attempted to transition towards a more possession-based style of play. While that approach had its moments, it didn't yield the best results. The team often struggled to control matches or convert possession into meaningful goal-scoring chances. A similar pattern was seen more recently under Marquez, who also encouraged more ball progression from the back. Jamil, however, is a different profile of coach. He has made a name for himself in Indian football as a pragmatic tactician, one who builds teams that are difficult to break down and highly efficient on the counter. His memorable run with NorthEast United FC in the 2020-21 season showed how organised and effective his teams can be, something he repeated by guiding Jamshedpur FC to the playoffs in 2024-25. India need a clear blueprint to fall back on, especially in crunch matches where margins are fine. If Jamil can build a team that knows what it's trying to do both with and without the ball, he'll have solved a major piece of the puzzle. view comments Location : Jamshedpur, India, India First Published: August 02, 2025, 15:25 IST News sports » football First Three Things Khalid Jamil Needs To Do As Indian Football Team Head Coach Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
