Wimbledon: Djokovic, Shelton, Sinner, Swiatek and 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva reach the quarterfinals

Toronto Star5 days ago
LONDON (AP) — Right before Wimbledon began, Novak Djokovic declared it was the tournament that gave him the best chance to claim an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam singles trophy. Made sense, really, given that he's won seven titles there already and reached the past six finals.
For one uncharacteristically unsteady set in the fourth round Monday, it sure didn't look as if that would happen this year. Djokovic, though, turned things around and avoided what would have been his earliest exit at the All England Club since 2016, coming through for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over 11th-seeded Alex de Minaur at Centre Court.

Joe Pavelski, Taylor Twellman share lead in American Century celebrity golf tournament

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. (AP) — Former NHL player Joe Pavelski birdied the final three holes Saturday for a share of the second-round lead with former soccer player Taylor Twellman in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. Pavelski, the first-round leader who finished second last year behind former tennis player Mardy Fish, had a 21-point day in the modified Stableford scoring system to match Twellman at 44. Twellman had a 23-point round. 'Obviously, Twellman has been playing great,' Pavelski said. 'To finish birdie, birdie, birdie and be tied with him, I'll take that all day.' Country star Jake Owen was third at 41 after a 25-point round, and Carolina Panthers receiver Adam Thielen was another point back following a 21-point day. Former LPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam scored 20 points to reach 37. Three-time champions Tony Romo (18) and Mark Mulder (21) were at 36 with John Smoltz (19). Stephen Curry, the 2023 champion, had a 14-point round to join Fish (18) at 35. Charles Barkley lost 16 points to drop from a tie for 24th to a tie for 61st in the 90-player field. He had minus-7 points overall. Former baseball player Jimmy Rollins had a hole-in-one on the 154-yard, par-3 12th. He won a $325,000 Mastercraft boat. Juan Soto's 435-foot homer lifts Mets over Royals 3-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Juan Soto homered to lead the New York Mets past the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Saturday. Soto's two-run shot into the right field fountains opened the scoring in the fourth. Over his last 20 games, Soto has nine home runs and 19 RBIs. Frankie Montas (2-1) threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of 19 batters while allowing a run on four hits and striking out five. Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India opened the sixth with doubles, reducing the Mets lead to 2-1. India had two of the Royals four hits, both doubles. Reed Garrett relieved Montas and permitted India to advance on a wild pickoff attempt before retiring the heart of the Royals lineup, stranding the tying run. Jeff McNeil's two-out RBI single capped the scoring in the ninth. Edwin Díaz allowed a walk in two hitless frames, earning his 19th save. Scheduled Royals starter Michael Lorenzen missed the game with illness. Jonathan Bowlan (1-2), the second of six Royals bullpen pitchers, threw three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, including Soto's 435-foot home run. For the second straight game, the Mets successfully challenged a safe call on a Royals stolen base attempt. In both instances — Tyler Tolbert on Friday and Bobby Witt Jr. on Saturday — the runner didn't maintain contact with the base during a head-first slide. Witt popped up twice with runners in scoring position while his 14-game hitting streak ended. The Royals batted 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position during the first two games of the series. Key moment With a runner at third and the infield drawn in, first baseman Pete Alonso made a diving stop of Vinnie Pasquantino's sharp grounder, preserving the Mets one-run lead in the sixth. Ohtani, Conforto shine as Dodgers beat Giants 2-1 to end 7-game skid

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Michael Conforto had three hits and scored twice, Shohei Ohtani took another encouraging step back on the mound in his recovery from elbow surgery and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Saturday to end a seven-game losing streak. Ohtani threw three scoreless innings in his longest outing in a Dodgers uniform since signing with the team in 2023. Ohtani, who did not pitch last season 2024, threw 36 pitches, allowed one hit and had four strikeouts. The two-way Japanese star was also the Dodgers' designated hitter and batted leadoff. He went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Rafael Devers had a sacrifice fly for San Francisco. Conforto, who played for the Giants for two seasons, reached on an infield single in the first inning and scored on Tommy Edman's groundout. He later singled with two outs in the sixth and scored on Hyeseong Kim's hit. Emmett Sheehan (1-0) followed Ohtani and retired 13 batters to get the win. Alex Vesia retired two batters, and Tanner Scott got the last three outs for his 19th save as the Dodgers got their first win since July 3. Giants starter Lando Roupp (6-6) had eight strikeouts and allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Key moment After a diving stop of Andy Pages' infield single up the middle in the second inning, Giants shortstop Willy Adames made an errant flip to second baseman Casey Schmitt for an error, allowing Conforto to move from first to third. Conforto later scored on a groundout. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Ohtani's fastball was clocked at 99.9 mph twice in the first inning. Up next Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.77 ERA) faces Giants LHP Robbie Ray (9-3, 2.63) in the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB:
