'Critical' gas network reconnection repairs begin in Midhurst
But, ahead of the colder months, SGN said this "won't be viable" and supplies need to be re-connected before September. The works are expected to tale up to six weeks and began on Monday - but traffic management measures won't be introduced until Tuesday to enable the conclusion of the Gold Cup Polo weekend and the movement of several lorries from the site at nearby Cowdray Park.
Kemal Erghun, who owns Kemælli's Cafe in Midhurst, told BBC Radio Sussex: "I feel sad but good about the roadworks starting."It's progress but the town is fragile after previous works - it is difficult for us."It isn't really ideal because businesses struggle when there are roadworks - some people avoid Midhurst due to roadworks as it can add to 30 minutes on to journey times, but I understand it."
Jintana Barron, the co-owner of Jintana Flowers in the town, added: "The traffic means that no customers want to come to Midhurst."This makes business very difficult. All businesses suffer, it goes downhill."We fear for our future if works continue - some shops have left already."

US LNG producers soar as EU agrees to $750 billion in energy purchases
July 28 (Reuters) - Liquefied natural gas developers led gains for U.S. energy companies in premarket trading on Monday, after the European Union pledged $750 billion worth in strategic purchases as part of a sweeping trade pact. The framework trade deal, which ended months of uncertainty for industries and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic, calls for strategic purchases, covering oil, gas, and nuclear fuel, during U.S. President Donald Trump's term in office. NextDecade (NEXT.O), opens new tab, Venture Global (VG.N), opens new tab, and Cheniere Energy (LNG.N), opens new tab jumped between 5% and 7%, with the deal bolstering the prospects for American LNG exporters as they expand to meet growing demand for cleaner-burning fuels. Uranium miner Energy Fuels (UUUU.A), opens new tab rose 4% to $10.42. The U.S. became the world's biggest LNG supplier in 2023, surpassing Australia and Qatar, as surging global prices fed demand for more exports, due in part to supply disruptions and sanctions linked to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Oil prices , also rose over 1.5%. The agreement imposes a 15% U.S. import tariff on most EU goods, a softer blow than markets had feared. "Terms of the EU-U.S. trade deal were at the forefront, with the 15% tariff level better than feared (30% was mooted previously)," said Ashley Kelty, an analyst at Panmure Liberum. "This should see less of a drag on industrial activity between the two." Still, Kelty noted the deal could weigh on gas prices. "The demand for the EU to buy more U.S. energy will see more U.S. LNG imports in the future," Kelty said, signalling a potential supply glut. Shares of U.S. natural gas producers Expand Energy (EXE.O), opens new tab and EQT Corp (EQT.N), opens new tab were up 1.6% and 2%, respectively, before the bell.

Trump praises UK on trying to reduce small boat crossings
Donald Trump suggested that the UK is 'doing a fantastic thing' in trying to reduce immigration via small boat crossings. Mr Trump said he knows 'nothing about the boats' when asked about the issue while meeting Sir Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort, but said 'my hats are off to you' if the UK is trying to reduce immigration. Sir Keir and his wife Lady Victoria were greeted by the President and a chorus of bagpipes as they arrived in South Ayrshire on Monday. When Mr Trump was asked about how he would deal with small boats, Sir Keir explained that it refers to people who are crossing the Channel. Mr Trump told reporters: 'If you're stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, … my hats are off to you. You're doing, not a good thing, you're doing a fantastic thing. 'So I know nothing about the boats, but if the boats are loaded up with bad people, and they usually are, because, you know, other countries don't send their best they send people that they don't want, and they're not stupid people, and they send the people that they don't want.' Turning to the Prime Minister, Mr Trump added: 'And I've heard that you've taken a much stronger stance on this.' Mr Trump later added: 'Europe is going… is a much different place than it was just five years ago, 10 years ago. 'They've got to get their act together. If they don't, you're not going to have Europe anymore, as you know it, and you can't do that. This is a magnificent part of the world, and you cannot ruin it.' The latest data from the Home Office indicates that 122 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday. The meeting between the leaders comes as a part of Mr Trump's five-day-long private trip to Scotland. The UK US trade deal and the situation in Gaza are among the items expected to feature in their discussions at Turnberry. Mr Trump took questions from the press as the bagpipes continued to play. Asked about tariffs on whisky, he could be heard saying: 'We'll talk about that, I didn't know whisky was a problem. I'm not a big whisky drinker but maybe I should be.' And he said of the special relationship: 'Our relationship is unparalleled.'

Chelsea transfer news: Xavi Simons, Jorrel Hato, Morgan Rogers, Rodrygo and more
Though a successful Club World Cup campaign sees Chelsea return from the USA as world champions, the Blues are not expected to slow down their transfer activity ahead of the new season starting in August. The club began the summer transfer windows with their usual vigour and have already completed the signings of Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap, while adding Joao Pedro in time for the Brazilian to score in the Club World Cup final against PSG. Enzo Maresca 's side are preparing for a jaunt into the Champions League next season after finishing fourth in the English top-flight and winning the Conference League in a busy term. Some fans will feel the Blues still have work to do in the summer, with a bulking of the squad needed in some areas to provide the quality demanded by Europe's elite club competition. There is no shortage of funds at Stamford Bridge, with big-money moves a constant fixture of recent transfer windows, and this summer is set to be no different. Here's everything you need to know about Chelsea's summer transfer plans. Arrivals & areas to improve The first port of call for Chelsea this summer was a new winger, as the club decided not to make the deal for Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho permanent. The signing of Jamie Gittens means they have a direct replacement for Sancho, though the departure of Noni Madueke means the club may decide to dip back into the market for another wing profile. Cole Palmer may have shown his attacking quality in the Club World Cup final, scoring two of Chelsea's goals, though he lacked consistency over recent months – highlighted by the fact that he scored just once in the last 20 games of the 2024/25 term – and he clearly needs some help carrying the goalscoring and creative burden. The purchases of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro should go some way to doing just that, with Pedro especially already showing his worth during the Club World Cup. Elsewhere, a bolstering of their goalkeeping ranks could be in order, with a new central defender potentially required if transfers out of the club fall into place. Done deals Ins: Joao Pedro (Brighton, £60m), Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund, £48.5m), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town, £30m), Estevao (Palmeiras, £29m), Dario Essugo (Sporting Lisbon, £18.5m), Kendry Paez (Independiente, £17.5m), Mamadou Sarr (Strasbourg, £11.9m) Outs: Noni Madueke (Arsenal, £48.5m), Djordje Petrovic (Bournemouth, £25m) Kepa Arrizabalaga (Arsenal, £5m), Jadon Sancho (Manchester United, end of loan), Bashir Humphreys (Burnley, £14.7m), Marcus Bettinelli (Manchester City, nominal fee), Mathis Amougou (Strasbourg, undisclosed), Lucas Bergstrom (out of contract), Mike Penders (Strasbourg, loan) Potential targets Xavi Simons, RB Leipzig Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons. Talks have accelerated between the two clubs over a potential move, with it now expected a formal offer will be submitted in the coming days. This comes as Joao Felix prepares to leave the club, with a move to Al-Nassr said to be agreed, while Christopher Nkunku could also depart this summer. Alejandro Garnacho, Manchester United Chelsea were interested in bringing Man Utd winger Garnacho to Stamford Bridge in January, though a move failed to materialise and the Argentinian winger was also linked to Napoli. However, with the Italian champions cooling their interest, Garnacho having stated his desire to stay in the Premier League and Chelsea selling Noni Madueke, the Blues could go back in for the 21-year-old. Jorrel Hato, Ajax Fresh reports are linking the Blues with a move for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, who can play at left-back and centre-back. The Dutch giants are said to want £40m for the 19-year-old, with Chelsea supposedly having held informal talks to explore a move. Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa The Blues are known admirers of Morgan Rogers, according to The Athletic. It is not known if they deem his position as a necessary addition to the squad at this moment, but that profile of player could certainly add something different in attack while easing the burden on Palmer and co. Reports continue to link them with the 22-year-old, though there is nothing concrete in terms of an offer or approach yet. Mike Maignan, AC Milan Chelsea originally seemed to have one goalkeeping option in mind, with the club targeting Maignan before the Club World Cup, though it is unknown if they may come back in for the 29-year-old French shot-stopper. He kept 12 clean sheets in Serie A last season, but reports are suggesting that the Blues could be disappointed with a new contract potentially convincing him to stay in Italy. Rodrygo, Real Madrid With the departure of Madueke confirmed, expect links to wingers to become increasingly visible in the next few days and weeks. One such link is for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who is said to be surplus to requirements at Los Blancos. Rumours persist linking the Brazilian to Liverpool, Arsenal and the Blues, as well as Man City.
