Regina correctional officer charged in drug trafficking investigation
A former correctional officer at Regina's jail has been charged in a lengthy drug trafficking investigation, according to the RCMP.
The investigation into suspected drug trafficking at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre (RPCC) began on Sept. 26, 2023. At that time, a 36-year-old inmate at the prison was charged with possessing drugs for the purpose of committing an indictable offence.
Police determined that the inmate had an accomplice outside of the prison that was helping with the purchasing, packaging and transporting of drugs to a then unknown correctional officer at the prison.
After a self-described 'lengthy and complex investigation,' White Butte RCMP have identified the officer responsible for trafficking drugs into the RPCC.
On July 16, police charged Justin Amyotte, 44, of Regina. He faces one count each of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence of trafficking a controlled substance, breach of trust by a public officer and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Amyotte is set to make his next appearance in provincial court on Aug. 7.

Woman files lawsuit against Frank Stronach, Magna over alleged 1986 sexual assault

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Frank Gunn Billionaire businessman Frank Stronach, who is awaiting trial on more than a dozen charges related to sexual assault, is now also facing a civil lawsuit from a woman who alleges he sexually assaulted her decades ago when she was a student sponsored by Magna, the auto parts company he founded. In a statement of claim filed in June, Jane Boon alleges Stronach sexually assaulted her at a company guest house in December 1986 after plying her with alcohol during a corporate party at a Toronto restaurant he owned. She also alleges Magna knew Stronach, who was the company's controlling shareholder and director at the time, posed a risk to female students receiving sponsorship and took no steps to warn or protect her or others like her. The allegations have not been tested in court and neither Stronach nor Magna have filed a statement of defence at this time. Stronach's civil lawyer, Sarit Batner, says he "strenuously denies the allegations and will vigorously defend this lawsuit." Magna declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal claim. The 92-year-old tycoon was charged last year with 18 counts – including sexual assault and indecent assault – related to 13 complainants, with some allegations dating back to the 1970s. He's expected to face trial on 12 of the counts in Toronto early next year, and has pleaded not guilty in that case. Another trial is set to take place later in Newmarket on the remaining counts. Stronach has denied all allegations against him. Boon is not among the complainants in the criminal cases, none of whom can be identified due to a standard publication ban. Boon alleges in the lawsuit that she was sexually assaulted by Stronach after attending Magna's annual shareholder meeting in December 1986, followed by a corporate after-party that evening at a Toronto restaurant he owned. She claims Stronach seated her next to him at the dinner table, where the restaurant's maître d' topped up wine glasses "frequently," and he pulled her onto the dance floor at one point. The lawsuit says Boon, who was working in Guelph, Ont., at the time, declined an offer to stay at the corporate guest house that night. But when Stronach's driver came over to the table after dessert, Boon alleges Stronach announced: "Jane has had too much to drink. She can't go back to Guelph. I'll drive her to the guest house and you can take her car." The lawsuit claims an "incredulous and uncertain" Boon left with Stronach, worried about her future and what would happen if she rebuffed him. Stronach took her to the guest house north of Toronto, where he undressed her and had unprotected sex with her without consent, the lawsuit alleges. Alliston man jailed again two days after release on bail
Kody Berdan, 36, was arrested again on Thursday after provincial police say he violated the condition of his bail release. Berdan was under a house arrest condition when he was released on Tuesday. But according to Nottawasaga OPP, patrolling officers saw him near Yonge Street in Alliston at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a release order and failing to comply with a probation order. He is scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday following an appearance in a virtual courtroom from the Nottawasaga OPP detachment in Alliston. Berdan was sentenced last week after he pleaded guilty to breaking a man's fingers and was granted bail on weapons charges. He was then released on house arrest to a surety days after he was mistakenly let out of jail by staff at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene. Berdan's older brother Darryl, also known as Kenny, faces several serious charges that include drug possession and failing to comply with release orders. Ex-CAO admits to stealing over $500K from Manitoba municipality, then faking cyberattack
A former chief administrative officer has admitted to stealing more than half a million dollars from a western Manitoba municipality's bank account, then trying to cover it up by fabricating a story about a cyberattack and altering documents. Amber Fisher, 41, stood in the middle of a Winnipeg courtroom and pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 on Friday afternoon. In 2022, she was fired as chief administrative officer for the Municipality of Gilbert Plains, about 350 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. A forensic accounting report found she had transferred about $532,000 of the municipality's money to her bank account while in office. Fisher has paid back nearly $17,000, court heard Friday. Her guilty plea included an admission that she lied to her colleagues about the misappropriated money once it was discovered, then faked a cyberattack to cover her tracks and altered documents in an attempt to clear herself of any wrongdoing. Two other charges — fraud over $5,000 and knowingly using proceeds of crime — were stayed. Fisher started to work for Gilbert Plains in 2018 and was promoted to chief administrative officer in April 2020, court documents say. The municipality sued Fisher in 2023, accusing her of faking a cyberattack in an attempt to cover her tracks. Fisher didn't submit a statement of defence and a default judgment ruled in the municipality's favour. The default judgment ordered Fisher to pay $525,000, with an annual interest rate of five per cent. A Manitoba court ordered the seizure of her wages last year.
