BBC News05-05-2025
A town's festival is back for the 32nd year in a row.The seven day Swindon Festival of Literature begins on Monday and runs until Sunday, with events ranging from readings to open-air festival style performance art.It has run since 1994, including a virtual festival in 2020 because of Covid-19, and focused on not only literature, but performance and art.Professor Richard Dawkins, poet George Szirtes and impressionist Alistair McGowan were among the names set to appear.
The festival's founder, Matt Holland, who still runs it, said: "It's unbelievable - when we started it, we didn't think there'd be 32, but here we are and it's great."There will be a total of 31 events over the course of the week, some of which are free to attend, while others carry an entry fee.The first event on Monday is the Dawn Chorus, a free event at 5:30 BST in Lawn Woods near Old Town, with poetry, dance, music and lasts for an hour or more."Of all the events, it brings the biggest variety of people together," said Mr Holland. The festival also manages to attract some big names. The evolutionary biologist, Professor Richard Dawkins, will appear on Wednesday, as will the Kings Gold Medal for Poetry-winner George Szirtes.Popular comedian Ivo Graham will take to the stage on Friday, as will impressionist Alistair McGowan. There are 26 more events across the week."I defy anyone not to find something they like among the events," said Mr Holland.

Gorillaz fans only just clocking pun behind band's iconic name after 27 years

Gorillaz have become a household name thanks to their catchy tunes - but it seems a lot of their bands have no idea where the iconic band's name actually comes from They've been dropping hits since the late 1990s - but some Gorillaz fans are only just learning how the band's name came to be. The virtual band, created by musician Demin Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, is made up of four fictional members 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle. ‌ The idea to create the iconic band came about when Albran and Hewlett were watching MTV. Fed up of the show's offerings, Hewlett said: "If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a virtual band, something that would be a comment on that." Albarn added: "This was the beginning of the boy band sort of explosion and it just felt so manufactured. ‌ "And we were like, well let's make a manufactured band but make it kind of interesting." ‌ They went onto release popular songs including Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc, DARE, Rock the House, Momentary Bliss, 19-2000, Kids With Guns, Tomorrow Comes Today, and On Melancholy Hill. However, 27 years after the band first formed back in 1998, some fans have been wondering how the band came up with their name - and there's a number of theories behind it. One Reddit user said: "The name of the band Gorillaz is a pun because a group of gorillas is called a band." In response, another user added: "From what I've been told, the name "Gorillaz" comes from a comment Liam Gallagher of Oasis made. "Damon Albarn, the musical force behind Gorillaz, used to be/is in another band called Blur, who were a major competitor with Oasis back in the 90s at the peak of Britpop. "An interviewer compared the feud to the battle between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the 60s, and asked Liam whether Oasis were The Beatles or the Stones. "Liam responded, 'We're the Beatles and the Stones, and [Blur are] the f***ing Monkees." Albarn apparently named his next group Gorillaz to poke fun at this comment.'." However, others claim it's due to both Hewlett and Albarn were born in 1968, the year of the monkey. ‌ Finally, Radio X suggests its to maintain their anonymity, saying: "The band originally identified themselves as 'Gorilla', which could be a play on the word 'guerilla,' coming from the words guerilla warfare - which is a term used to describe underhand and un-open warfare tactics. "This makes sense when you consider we were never really meant to know who was behind the project... "Damon Albarn is now of course almost as synonymous with the hugely successful animated band as he is with Blur, but it wasn't meant to be that way. "'People weren't meant to know it was me,' Albarn told The Guardian back in 2017. "Even now I think, during the gigs, I'm going to be able to go off, go backstage and make myself a drink and a hologram will take my place for a couple of songs."

Rashford, 27, sealed a move to Barcelona on loan with an option to buy this summer, potentially bringing his 10-year stint in the Manchester United team to a permanent end. A video uploaded to TikTok showed Rashford signing autographs for Barcelona fans out of the window of his Range Rover, with Lucia alongside him in the passenger seat. SunSport understands that the Red Devils exile asked Lucia, 26, to help him settle in Spain to allow him to focus on football. She was present for Rashford's unveiling photoshoot at the Camp Nou last month. Rashford and Lucia have been in each other's lives since high school, attending Ashton-on-Mersey School in Manchester together as youngsters. They were in a relationship as Rashford made his stunning debut for Man United in the Europa League against FC Midtjylland in February 2016. The romance hit a rocky patch in 2021 during the Covid pandemic as they split, but only to reconcile the next year. In June 2022, Rashford proposed to Lucia with a £250,000 engagement ring after enjoying a romantic meal at Catch LA in West Hollywood, California. 7 Rashford and Lucia have had an on-again-off-again relationship Credit: Getty 7 The pair got engaged in 2022, but called the engagement off the following year Credit: However, their engagement ended in June 2023 after the England international was seen with a model outside a Miami hotel. At the time, SunSport exclusively revealed that they broke up because the relationship had "run its course". Since then the pair have stayed in touch, while Rashford has been linked to other romantic interests. But it appears they are both back in each other's lives as they spend time together in Barcelona. Rashford has said that his move to Spain has been about rediscovering the happiness in his football. The star, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, opened up on his first switch abroad in an interview with Sport. He said: "I need to be happy to play my best football. For me personally… Football is my life. You know? "It's been my life since I was very, very young. Actually, I don't know anything else. So the bond I have, not only with my career but with sport in general, is huge and I don't expect it to go away. "But yes, it's always good to be happy when you play football. It's the reason I started in this. "You never know for sure, but from the beginning I have felt comfortable. "On the pitch, of course I'll learn more with each game. But the starting point is very good. "The more matches that come, the more I'll learn. Barça is the easiest place to enjoy and learn football." 7 Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy Credit: Getty

More info A young Edinburgh-born woman is set to be the youngest competitor on The Great British Bake Off this year. 23-year-old Jasmine, who is living in London while she completes her medical degree, will be showcasing her baking skills in the 2025 Channel 4 series. The student, who learnt the basics of bread and cakes through her mother and aunts, said she likes "using classic flavours and techniques to produce delicious bakes." Twelve bakers, including two hairdressers and a creative entrepreneur, have been announced for series 16 ahead of the return of the baking contest on Channel 4, reports Wales Online. Drag king and service designer Jessika, who was raised in Cornwall, said she was alone at her friend's house when she got the call to be in the show. The 32-year-old said: "Seeing the big white tent for the first time was so weird. I've watched the show for years, and entertained the idea that, potentially, maybe, one day, this girl could quite possibly bake up a storm for the judges. "But it didn't really hit me until I was standing at my workstation, apron on, looking around at the other bakers and thinking, 'Welp, girl, you made it!'" Born in Hong Kong and now living in Essex with her husband and two children is bridal designer Pui Man who rediscovered baking during the Covid-19 lockdown. The 51-year-old said she was "extremely excited" but also "extremely nervous" about going into the tent. Belfast-based Iain, who is a former amateur powerlifter, mixes his love of live music with sourdough, immortalising album cover art on the crusts of his loaves. The 29-year-old software engineer said: "When I got the call to confirm my place I was in sheer disbelief, I had no idea it would actually happen. "I thought it was a prank at first, I got a call a few minutes after being told and I thought they were going to tell me they made a mistake and I wasn't actually on the show!" Ukraine-born Nataliia, who moved to the UK just before the war broke out with Russia, is an office assistant who follows traditional recipes that have been handed down through the generations. The east Yorkshire based baker, 32, said: "My husband secretly sent off my application without telling me, and when he told me that the Bake Off team wanted to speak to me, I was - to put it mildly - shocked. We were at home, and it was the most unexpected phone call." Business development executive Toby grew up in the seaside town of Sidmouth and now lives with his girlfriend Syd in Warwickshire with their rescue dog Bex. The 29-year-old said it was surreal to meet hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding and added: "They were honestly just so friendly and we had a hug and introduced ourselves. I do remember I felt an overwhelming need to be interesting... whether I was successful or not, I'm not sure I want to know." Also competing are two hairdressers, 59-year-old Lesley, who lives with her partner Mark and two dogs in Kent, and Nadia, 41, from Liverpool, who blends Indian and Italian flavours with Scouse influence. The line-up is completed by senior systems architect Aaron, creative entrepreneur Tom, Welsh software delivery manager Leighton, and analytical research and development scientist Hassan from south Yorkshire. The Great British Bake Off will begin on Tuesday September 2 at 8pm on Channel 4.
