Heroic tributes pour in for Rafizi from PKR grassroots as he bows out from Madani gov't with honour

'MR Rafizi, you are a man with honour and integrity. To me, you are an exemplary citizen. I am glad to see someone who were educated at the same secondary school as I was, would live up to his ideals. I will continue to support you in your fight to make this country a better place for everyone.'
Such is one of perhaps tens of thousands of accolades that accompany the Facebook post of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as he announced his decision yesterday (May 28) to step down from his ministerial portfolio given the loss of his deputy presidency means he no longer has PKR's mandate to translate its agenda into government programmes.
Currently clearing his leave, he has set June 17 to be his last day in office.
At the time of writing, that FB post alone has garnered a staggering 42K likes, 14K comments and 4.9K shares, majority of which praised the Pandan MP for his heroics by 'walking the talk' (when he expressed his desire to resign), hence living up to his principle as a leader with integrity.
Judging from the moral support accorded to Rafizi – which presumably have come from the PKR and for that matter, Pakatan Harapan (PH) grassroots – one wonders if the underlying disgruntlement that have been openly expressed since it was announced that Nurul Izzah Anwar has won the deputy prescient race would boil over in light of the next national polls slated for 2027.
If this happens, thinning faith in the newly-elected PKR leadership coupled with concerns over the fading Reformasi spirit within the party can probably spell disaster to the ruling PH coalition by virtue of PKR holding the steering wheel via its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Former The Star environment section editor Andrew Sia joined the chorus of applause for Rafizi who is touted as a 'think tank MP' (by virtue of him having founded pollster Invoke Malaysia) with the gesture 'PMXI💪🏽👍🏼'.
'Thank you for keeping up the struggle for Reformasi … Hope you can return to clean up this country,' penned the now Malaysiakini columnist.
'A dignified move unlike certain politikus who continues to hinge onto their post as Senator despite having lost (an election).'
Over on X, Rafizi's decision to step down was greeted with expression of anger towards the current leadership with one seemingly pro-opposition commenter respecting his decision 'cause you walk the talk' but teasingly remarked that she had searched in vain for Nurul Izzah's comment.
Another self-proclaimed critic praised him for 'having the balls' while others described him 'as still having spine and integrity' which makes him a 'genuine reformist' as they reminded the PKR president and Rafizi's successor Nurul Izzah that divine intervention a.k.a. karma is on the way as they are bound to reap what they sow.
Rafizi's resignation post had at the time of publication generated 968.7K views with 9.6K likes, 928 comments and 7.3K shares.
At the end of the day, a pro-Madani government backer summed up best with 'Red flag 🚩🚩🚩' that 'something is not right within the entire PKR structure and organisation'. – May 29, 2025

Local parties must lead: Hajiji

Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji, accompanied by Usno President Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, is welcomed by Usno members upon arrival at Dewan Terbuka, Seri Dungkuan, Kampung Rampayan Laut. KOTA BELUD: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said local parties must be dominant in Sabah politics and prioritised when forming alliances for the coming 17th state election. He said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Government, which is formed by local parties, must be defended and continued in the coming election. Advertisement 'We want to continue this government, and that is why this election is important. We must not make the wrong choice. Local parties must be dominant in Sabah's political landscape and must be prioritised,' he said at the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) annual congress, here, Sunday. Hajiji said any discussions on cooperation with other parties should not come at the expense of local leadership. 'Cooperation is another matter, but GRS as a local coalition must be defended. This aligns with the sentiment of the people on the ground who want local parties to lead the Government. 'As GRS chairman, I will ensure this,' he said. Hajiji said he would not hand over the rights and struggle of GRS to those with ill intentions. 'I will not easily surrender what GRS stands for to those trying to undermine the coalition,' he said. He urged leaders and members of all GRS component parties, including Usno, to go to the ground and engage with the public on the coalition's 'Our Home, We Protect' and 'Sabah First' philosophies. Other component parties include Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Sabah, Sabah Progressive Party, Parti Cinta Sabah, Liberal Demokratik Sabah and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah. 'This is our mission. When we say, 'Our Home, We Protect', it should be understood clearly. We shouldn't have to explain bit by bit. It's simple, we take care of our own,' he said. On Saturday, Sabah PKR Chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said official negotiations with GRS were set to begin ahead of the state election, following approval from the PKR and PH central leadership. However, GRS Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the coalition should 'honour' Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's call for it to contest against BN in the polls before discussions on any possible cooperation. He said such a contest would eliminate any accusations that victory depends solely on the strength of particular parties within coalitions. 'I agree with Bung that GRS and BN should face off in the coming state election. By leaving it to the people, whoever wins will no longer face accusations that Party A won because of Party B's strength, and there will be no more allegations of betrayal,' said Armizan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cambodia seeks ICJ ruling over border tensions with Thailand

BANGKOK: Cambodia said on Sunday it had asked the International Court of Justice to resolve its border disputes with Thailand, after a flare-up in their long-running row led the Southeast Asian neighbours to mobilise troops on both sides of the border. A Cambodian soldier was killed in a brief skirmish on May 28 in a confrontation over the 820-km (510-mile) frontier, parts of which are undemarcated and claimed by both nations. "Cambodia chooses a peaceful resolution based on international law through the ICJ mechanism for solving the border dispute," Prime Minister Hun Manet posted on his Facebook page. The post showed a picture of Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn holding an envelope that Hun Manet said contained a formal letter to the ICJ in The Hague, often called the World Court. The Thai Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cambodia's move. Bangkok has previously said it has never recognised the court's jurisdiction and prefers to settle the disputes through bilateral mechanisms. Talks on border demarcation over the weekend between officials from both countries were inconclusive with both sides pledging to de-escalate tensions and continue dialogue. Cambodia said in a statement that it had proposed to Thailand the two countries should jointly bring the four dispute areas to the ICJ and that these areas should no longer be included in future bilateral talks on border demarcation. Cambodia also said that it would begin legal proceedings at the ICJ independently, despite Thailand's rejection of the court's jurisdiction. Thailand, on the other hand, made no mention of the four disputed areas or the ICJ, saying only that "both sides will continue discussions and joint implementation" of border demarcation talks. Thailand is set to host the next meeting in September. Hun Manet said the disputes at the four border areas, including the one where the fatal clash took place, are "complicated and have high risks of armed clashes and where bilateral mechanisms cannot solve." He did not disclose the contents of the letter, which were not visible in the picture. Cambodia has twice successfully sought ICJ resolutions, in 1962 on the ownership of the disputed Preah Vihear temple and in 2013, after it sought clarification of jurisdiction of the land around the temple. Although both governments have pledged to handle the issue through dialogue and to calm nationalist fervour, Bangkok has threatened to close the border and cut off electricity supplies to its neighbour. Phnom Penh announced it would cease buying Thai electric power, internet bandwidth and produce. It has also ordered local television stations not to screen Thai films.--REUTERS

GRS optimistic of continued alliance with PH in Sabah election

LABUAN: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is optimistic that its political alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH) will continue into the Sabah state election. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) vice-president Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is also PGRS president, is making strategic efforts to ensure the continuation of the coalition's collaboration with PH both during and after the polls. 'The current Sabah government is a combination of GRS and president is fine-tuning the details of ongoing discussions with PH, and he will make an official announcement in due course,' he told Bernama after officiating the Labuan PGRS annual conference here today. He said the Labuan division would play a critical support role during the state election campaign, especially by reaching out to Labuan-based Sabah voters. 'One of the key efforts is the opening of an operations room here in Labuan, specifically to coordinate support for PGRS candidates,' he said. The current five-year term of the 16th Sabah state assembly will expire automatically on Nov 11. In a recent statement, Hajiji reaffirmed that the cooperation between GRS and PH is based on shared governance goals and the commitment to political stability in Sabah. He said that both coalitions have demonstrated that working together has yielded positive outcomes for the people, and the partnership remains essential for ensuring continued development and unity in the state.
