Bhattacharya and Kennedy split on mRNA cuts

Politicoa day ago
AROUND THE AGENCIES
National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya is making the case that mRNA vaccine technology is 'promising, but not yet ready for prime time.'
He cites a lack of public trust in the technology as the reason his boss, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,recently canceled $500 million in mRNA vaccine development projects.
Bhattacharya weighed in on Kennedy's decision in a conversation over the weekend with Steve Bannon, the longtime Trump ally and prominent MAGA figure, on Bannon's 'War Room' podcast:
'The reason that he did that — and I think it's very important for people to understand — as far as public health goes for vaccines, the mRNA platform is no longer viable,' Bhattacharya said.
'You can't have a platform where such a large fraction of the population distrusts the platform, if you're going to use it for vaccines, and expect it to work.'
But, but, but: Kennedy, who has long been suspicious of the mRNA vaccine platform, offered an explanation for the funding cuts that contradicts Bhattacharya's reasoning.
'After reviewing the science and consulting top experts at NIH and FDA, HHS has determined that mRNA technology poses more risk than benefits for these respiratory viruses,' Kennedy said in a video posted on social media last week, referring to Covid-19 and flu mRNA vaccines.
Big picture: Scientists and drugmakers worry that Kennedy's skepticism of mRNA could stifle cancer treatment developments, our Lauren Gardner reports.
mRNA technology can instruct the immune system to attack problem proteins, so it holds promise as a customized treatment for rare cancers and diseases. As such, dozens of mRNA therapies are being studied or are in the drug-development pipeline.
Bhattacharya seemed aware of the technology's use beyond flu and Covid vaccines. After telling Bannon that mRNA technology wasn't ready for widespread vaccine use, he added: 'For cancer, maybe it's another story.'

OPERATING ROOM
A large-scale study of New York's Mount Sinai Health System suggests that artificial intelligence could help emergency departments better handle their patient loads.
In the study, researchers from Mount Sinai trained an AI model on 1.8 million emergency department visits between January 2019 and December 2023. Then they tested the model by comparing it with two months' worth of nurse triage assessments of nearly 50,000 patient visits across the system's urban and suburban hospitals.
The result: Nurse predictions were 81.6 percent accurate, while the AI model's assessments were 85.4 percent accurate.
The study, published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health in July, had a few limitations, the authors noted, including that the research was conducted at a single health system over a short time span. Outcomes might differ in another setting, and longer-term trends could yield different results.
Bird's eye view: 'The strength of this approach is its ability to turn complex data into timely, actionable insights for clinical teams — freeing them up to focus less on logistics and more on delivering the personal, compassionate care that only humans can provide,' Dr. Eyal Klang, study co-author and director of the Generative AI Research Program at Mount Sinai, said in a statement.

Hygiene Tech Meets Healing Proteins

Hospital-acquired infections can be caused by the cross-infection from surface and skin of patient, equipment, and healthcare staff. Various types of products and services are available to control hospital-acquired infections such as sterilization, cleaning & disinfection products, protective barriers, and endoscope reprocessing products. Increase in awareness regarding personal hygiene after COVID-19 is a major factor to boost the Hospital Infection Prevention and Control growth. Growth factors, proteins or peptides found in nature, are important for the control of cell actions like growth, specialization, movement, and survival. They attach to certain receptors on cell surfaces, which starts signals inside the cells that change how they act. Growth factors are needed for body functions such as development in embryos, healing wounds, fixing tissues, and immune reactions. Key Growth Drivers and Opportunities High Cases of Hospital Acquired Infections: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a major risk to patient safety and healthcare results around the world. These infections, often caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, and Escherichia coli, usually happen because of long hospital stays, surgeries, poor infection control, and antibiotic resistance. Those in intensive care, people with weak immune systems, and those having surgery are at risk. HAIs raise sickness and death rates; these also cause higher medical costs and longer stays in hospitals. Growing Geriatric Population: The growing geriatric population significantly contributes to the rise in hospital-acquired infections, as older adults often have weakened immune systems and require frequent medical care or hospitalization. This increases their vulnerability to infections, driving the demand for effective hospital infection prevention and control measures. As a result, healthcare facilities are investing more in disinfection, protective equipment, and sterilization solutions to ensure patient safety and reduce infection risks in aging populations. Challenges Failure of end-users to follow infection prevention rules limits how well hospital infection control works. When staff, patients, or support people don't follow hygiene rules—such as washing hands, sterilizing tools, or using safety gear— the risk of contamination and infections rises. Innovation and Expansion NAVTA & Virox Launch Free Infection Control Training for Safer Vet Care In March 2023, (National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) NAVTA, Virox launch certificate program in infection prevention, to advance best practices in infection prevention. This program is a free online program designed to provide professionals with the knowledge needed to reduce the risk of spreading infection and create a safer workplace for their team, patients, and clients. NeoIPC Unveils Toolkit to Shield Newborns from Hospital Infections In November 2023, The NeoIPC Consortium announced the launch of a new surveillance toolkit to help neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) track and prevent hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in high-risk newborns, including very preterm infants. This toolkit aims to standardize how infections are tracked in Newborn Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to allow for improved data gathering and assessment. It has tools, training, and reporting forms made for newborn care locations. By helping with early detection and response, this project hopes to lower infection rates and improve results for fragile newborns. Inventive Sparks, Expanding Markets The key players operating the hospital infection prevention and control market includes, 3M Company, Crosstex International, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Belimed AG, among others. Gov. Newsom trolls President Trump by mimicking his all-caps style

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Governor Gavin Newsom and his press office are mimicking President Donald Trump's flamboyant writing style on social media this week by penning posts with all capital letters, self-praising declarations, and condescending tones. The governor's X page proudly declared that Newsom is 'THE MOST LOVED & HANDSOME GOVERNOR' in America. In another X post, the governor claimed that many people refer to Trump as 'President Donald 'Taco' Trump,' characterized Trump as a 'criminal,' and torpedoed 'MAGA trolls' as 'pathetic and weak.' Newsom's new writing style was unleashed in the middle of a congressional map re-drawing battle between liberal blue California and conservative red states. Newsom gave a 24-hour deadline Tuesday for Trump to abandon efforts to draw new congressional maps in Texas that would help Republicans pick up more U.S. House of Representatives seats in the 2026 midterm election. The governor's press office wrote on X, 'FINAL WARNING DONALD TRUMP — MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT WARNING IN HISTORY! STOP CHEATING OR CALIFORNIA WILL REDRAW THE MAPS. AND GUESS WHO WILL ANNOUNCE IT THIS WEEK? GAVIN NEWSOM (MANY SAY THE MOST LOVED & HANDSOME GOVERNOR) AND A VERY POWERFUL TEAM. DON'T MAKE US DO IT!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.' On Wednesday, the governor said Trump missed his deadline by failing to respond to Newsom's demand letter. As a result, the governor announced he will move forward with his plan to counteract Trump's plan by re-drawing California's congressional maps in a way that helps Democrats win more seats for the 2026 midterms. Newsom said California's new maps will pave the way for Republicans losing control over the U.S. House. Newsom borrowed key words often used in Trump's speeches for his follow-up X post, writing, 'DONALD 'TACO' J. TRUMP … MISSED A SIMPLE DEADLINE — SOMETHING HE HAS OFTEN DONE WITH HIS MANY FAILED BUSINESSES — NOW CALIFORNIA WILL 'FIRE' HIM WITH NEW, 'MORE BEAUTIFUL MAPS.' HIGHLY ANTICIPATED, 'HISTORIC' PRESS CONFERENCE WITH YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR GAVIN CHRISTOPHER NEWSOM!!!!' The governor signed his posts with his full name's initials, 'GCN.' Changing congressional maps to ensure one political party's victory over another is called gerrymandering. President Trump is calling on Texas to blatantly carry out gerrymandering so that Republicans retain control of the House. Trump was previously banned from X's platform while he had millions of followers and the platform was still named Twitter. In 2021, Twitter said it locked Trump's account because of his tweets rejecting presidential election results after he lost re-election. The New York Times described Trump's post-election tweets as 'inaccurate and inflammatory.' Billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, changed its name to X, allowed Trump to return to the platform, and moved the company's headquarters out of San Francisco. Trump now uses Truth Social, which he launched in 2022, as his primary social media platform. In a Wednesday Truth Social post, the President wrote, 'Wow! Highest polling Republican President in HISTORY! Thank you.' He also wrote about the media's coverage of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump wrote, 'Very unfair media is at work on my meeting with Putin. Constantly quoting fired losers and really dumb people like John Bolton, who just said that, even though the meeting is on American soil, 'Putin has already won.' What's that all about? We are winning on EVERYTHING. The Fake News is working overtime. If I got Moscow and Leningrad free, as part of the deal with Russia, the Fake News would say that I made a bad deal! But now they've been caught. Look at all of the real news that's coming out about their CORRUPTION. They are sick and dishonest people, who probably hate our Country. But it doesn't matter because we are winning on everything!!! MAGA.' The President did not respond on Truth Social to Newsom's congressional map demands. Newsom said he will hold a news conference later this week. He wrote on X Wednesday afternoon, 'TREMENDOUS WORK IS BEING DONE. DONALD TRUMP (THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT) GET READY FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAYBACK YOU'VE EVER SEEN!!! COULD BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE AS YOUR PRESIDENCY ENDS (DEMS RETAKE CONGRESS!). AMERICA WILL BE LIBERATED — 'LIBERATION DAY' MANY ARE CALLING IT!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GCN.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. As Trump-Putin summit nears, family of American held in Russia hopes for another prisoner exchange

As President Donald Trump prepares to travel to Alaska on Friday to address the future of Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the family of the Texas man serving the longest prison sentence of any American currently being detained in Russia is hopeful that another prisoner exchange between the two nations will be on the agenda. "We hope for better relations between the U.S. and Russia that will hopefully lead to the release of my brother," Margaret Aaron, one of David Barnes' two sisters, told ABC News anchor Gio Benitez in an interview Wednesday. Barnes, who grew up in Alabama, has been detained in Moscow since January 2022 and is currently serving a 21.5-year sentence. "He's hanging in there," Aaron said. "He has been extremely strong through the last three and a half years. We're extremely proud of him and he has continued to be hopeful that something will happen." Unlike other Americans who have been held in Russia, Barnes is accused by Russian prosecutors of crimes in the United States, not Russia. Yet American law enforcement had no involvement in Barnes' prosecution in Moscow. Barnes was convicted by a Russian judge of abusing his two sons years earlier in Texas, but prosecutors in Montgomery County, Texas, told ABC News that law enforcement in the Lone Star State investigated the claims after they were reported by Barnes' Russian ex-wife and did not find evidence to support them. "I do know that everyone that heard and investigated the child sexual abuse allegations raised by Mrs. Barnes during the child custody proceedings did not find them to be credible," Montgomery County District Attorney's Office Trial Bureau Chief Kelly Blackburn previously told ABC News. "He's been suffering," Aaron said Wednesday. "He's innocent." Barnes' ex-wife, Svetlana Koptyaeva, has maintained that Barnes abused their sons while the children were growing up in the Texas suburbs years ago. Koptyaeva was charged with felony interference with child custody after allegedly taking the children from Texas to Russia in 2019 while a child custody dispute between her and Barnes was playing out. In 2020, a Texas family court designated Barnes as the primary guardian of his sons, but since since Koptyaeva had taken them out of the country, Barnes' family says he decided to travel to Russia after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted to try to fight for similar custody or visitation rights in Moscow's court system. Barnes was arrested weeks after arriving in Russia and has been behind bars ever since. In April, a judge in Moscow denied Barnes' appeal of his conviction. "We really, really need to have him designated as wrongfully detained," Aaron said. "Hopefully, to start that process, we need the help of Trump and Secretary [Marco] Rubio." The upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin on American soil comes four months after Russian officials released ballerina Ksenia Karelina to the U.S. through a prisoner exchange. Following Karelina's return to the U.S., she wrote a letter to Trump calling for the release of Barnes along with fellow Americans Robert Gilman and Andre Khachatoorian. Trump posted the letter on social media. "David Barnes, a Texas father of two sons, has been detained in Russia for far too long under charges already proven to be false, and it is past time for him to be released," U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas said in a statement at the time. "I urge President Trump and Secretary Rubio to prioritize efforts to bring David and all wrongfully-detained Americans throughout the world home." Other Americans who were previously held in Russia, like Paul Whelan, Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner, were transferred to penal colonies far from Moscow following their convictions -- but Barnes has been held in Russia's capital since he was taken into custody. "We have visited Mr. Barnes eight times since his arrest in January 2022," a U.S. State Department spokesperson told ABC News. "Our last visit to Mr. Barnes in detention was in May 2025." With all eyes on Anchorage ahead of this week's presidential summit, Barnes' family and friends in the U.S. will be paying close attention. "David's strength keeps us going," Aaron said.
