Ford recalls nearly 700,000 cars for fire risk. See impacted models.
The recall includes 2021 to 2024 Ford Bronco Sport and 2020 to 2022 Ford Escape vehicles.
According to Ford, a fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment. Liquid fuel or fuel vapor that accumulates near a hot surface may ignite, leading to an under-hood fire and increasing the risk of injury, Ford said in a NHTSA filing dated July 11. A fuel leak could lead to fuel odor both outside and inside the vehicle.
"This safety recall supersedes the prior recalls and will include a new remedy for this issue, which is currently under development and expects to be finalized in the near future," Ford said in a statement to USA TODAY on July 16, adding there is an interim software update that will help detect cracked injectors and lower the risk of a fire.
Ford said it is also recalling vehicles produced with these injectors that were not previously recalled, and the company is not aware of any injuries associated with under-hood fires related to cracked fuel injectors.
The recalled models were also part of a separate recall in late June due to the possibility that the rearview camera may fail, which can increase the risk of a crash. The company offered free software updates in that case.
Here's what to know about National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall no. 25V467000, and how Ford is handling it.
How many vehicles have been recalled?
According to a Ford spokesperson, the recall includes 687,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 694,271 vehicles if counting the U.S. and American territories like American Samoa and Puerto Rico.
Impacted vehicles include:
What led to the recall?
Ford previously issued notices in November 2022 and March 2024 to address the risk of under-hood fires due to fuel leaks from cracked injectors in Escape and Bronco Sport vehicles with 1.5 liter Dragon GTDI engines.
Ford tried to fix the issue by updating the engine control software to allow it to detect a cracked fuel injector and reduce temperatures of possible ignition sources. The remedy also included adding a tube to allow fuel to drain away from surfaces that may lead to a fire.
On April 11, 2024, the NHTSA opened a recall query to determine 'adequacy and safety consequences' of the previous remedy, Ford said. The NHTSA did not believe the fix got to the root cause of the issue.
Ford worked over the next few months to respond to the NHTSA, and then on July 23, 2024, Ford's Critical Concern Review Group began investigating a vehicle that had an under-hood fire after receiving the update. Ford began testing the vehicle and found it had a cracked injector that led to the fire. The company spent the next nine months inspecting vehicles that had experienced under-hood fires after undergoing the update.
According to Ford, the company also noted injector cracking on eight vehicles that experienced an under-hood fire; among them, six did not have updated engine control software.
'Ford is aware of no allegations of injuries associated with these (eight) fires,' the company said.
On March 7, 2025, Ford approved another remedy to address a subset of vehicles that did not properly receive the software portion of the update.
What should I do if I have one of these vehicles?
Ford said it notified dealers about the issue on July 15 and owner notification letters should begin mailing on Aug. 18, 2025. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their engine control software updated for free.
Some drivers have already received the update, so they do not need to take their vehicles in, Ford said. The company will let these drivers know if an update is needed or not. Owners can also search for their vehicle identification numbers online to see what recalls apply to their vehicles.
According to Ford, a final fix is in the works and when the free solution is available, the company will let owners know via mail.

Ford recalls over 694,000 vehicles due to potential fuel injector issue
Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 694,271 vehicles globally due to a potential issue with the fuel injector that may crack and lead to underhood fires. The recall affects certain models of the 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Ford Escape, with 1.5L engines. The fuel injectors were supplied by Italy-based Dumarey Flowmotion Technologies, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report. The NHTSA has reported that the fuel injectors could allow fuel or vapor to accumulate near ignition sources. The agency estimates that approximately 0.3% of the vehicles may have this defect. 'We estimate the aggregate cost of the action, based on the remedy options we are evaluating, to be about $570m and will be reflected in our second quarter 2025 results", the company said in a SEC filing. According to the NHTSA, a fuel leak may lead to a fuel odour both outside and inside the vehicle. Customers might also observe smoke or flames from the engine compartment or underbody, or receive warnings from the instrument cluster if there is a fire. The company's field review committee (FRC) approved Field Service Actions (FSA) 22S73/22V859 in November 2022 and 24S16/24V187 March 2024 for addressing the underhood fire risk. For both recalls, the remedy involves updating the engine control software to detect a cracked fuel injector and implementing a strategy to 'disable the high-pressure fuel pump', 'derate engine power', and minimise temperatures in the engine compartment. An additional tube will also be installed to enable fuel to drain away from potential ignition sources. Further, Ford's FRC approved FSA 25S21/25V165 in March this year to address vehicles that did not receive the software update correctly. Last April, the NHTSA opened a recall query questioning the adequacy of the remedy, as they believe it does not address the root cause and does not proactively replace defective fuel injectors. Ford responded to the query in May and June 2024. This month, Ford's FRC decided to initiate a safety recall with 'a to-be-determined remedy' for the vehicles earlier recalled and an additional population of vehicles with the 1.5L engine. Ford noted that it has detected eight vehicles that experienced underhood fires, with six not having the updated engine control software. The company said it is 'aware of no allegations of injuries' related to these eight fires. The final remedy is currently 'under development', and once available, owners will be notified by mail to have the service performed at a Ford or Lincoln dealer at no charge. Last year, Ford agreed to pay $165m civil penalty following a US government investigation that concluded the company failed to recall vehicles with defective rearview cameras. Ford Leads in the Number of Recalls, Faces Costly Penalties
Ford Motor CompanyF has been outdoing all automakers in the number of recalls this year. In its latest recall, Ford had to pull out 694,271 SUVs in the United States and its territories. Models including 2021-24 Bronco Sport, 2020-22 Escape and 2019-24 Kuga vehicles were a part of this recall, amounting to about 858,000 vehicles globally. The impacted vehicles have a problem with fuel leaks that could heighten the risk of the vehicle catching on fire. The company is subject to a cost of $570 million, owing to the blow from the recall in its second quarter 2025 results. NHTSA filing states that fuel injectors in some vehicles may crack, causing leaks that could lead to a fire. Drivers might notice a fuel smell, warning lights, smoke, or flames. According to NHTSA's data, Ford has been topping recall filings since 2020, signaling its struggle with quality. Ford's consent order with NHTSA might also be a reason why old and new recalls have been surfacing lately. This consent order also resulted in Ford agreeing to pay up to $165 million in fines, the second-largest civil penalty in NHTSA history, following the Takata airbag case. Ford has responded to this issue with a software update that would redirect fuel away from ignition sources, but only as a temporary fix. Although no injuries resulting from this issue have been reported, eight vehicles experienced underhood fires. Ford claims that six of these vehicles had not been installed with the recommended software update. The company had a history of two similar issues that resulted in a recall of 42,000 vehicles. This recall supersedes the prior recalls, for which remedy developments are underway. Shares of Ford have slumped 16.7% over the past year compared with the industry's 4.2% decline. Demand for Elon Musk's Tesla Cybertruck plummeted in the second quarter, new data shows
Sales of the Cybertruck, Tesla's electric pickup, plunged 51% year-on-year in Q2 to just 4,300 vehicles, according to Cox Automotive. Design head Franz von Holzhausen had confirmed in December 2023 the company had collected deposits to fill over 2 million orders — enough to fill production for 16 years. Instead, the high price combined with build quality problems means it is looking less likely the Cybertruck will even eclipse its 2024 sales of 39,000 vehicles. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect It's probably a good thing Tesla refuses to publish detailed sales figures, otherwise everyone could see just how badly Elon Musk's Cybertruck seems to have flopped. Only in its second full year on the market, the full-size electric pickup saw a staggering 51% year-on-year decline in demand during the past three months, according to new data published by market researcher Cox Automotive. The extimated 4,300 sold in Q2 were even eclipsed by rivals from legacy brands, including the Ford F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV truck. 'Suffice it to say, the hyper-competitive EV market is providing the troubled automaker no relief,' Cox Automotive reported, referring to Tesla. The company, which reported only aggregated quarterly global sales at the start of this month, did not respond to a request from Fortune for comment. Tesla said at launch it had deposits to fill 2 million orders Launched at the end of 2023, the Cybertruck had collected deposits for 2 million vehicles, design chief Franz von Holzhausen confirmed at the time. With Tesla officially installing capacity to build north of 125,000 vehicles annually, that was the equivalent of 16 years of demand before the company would have to find more customers. No wonder Tesla had initially hoped to double assembly line output by mid-2025 in order to meet this tidal wave. Yet those orders either keep getting pushed back or reservation holders have simply refunded their deposits. With 10,700 Cybertrucks sold through the first half, it's looking increasingly doubtful the model will crack the 39,000 units sold in 2024. The chief complaint about the vehicle has been just how far short it came to matching the original price promised in during its reveal, despite having two extra years' time in development. The most popular Cybertruck, the all-wheel-drive version with one motor each for powering the two axles, clocks in at $80,000 without extras instead of the $50,000 promised at its reveal in November 2019, when reservation owners could make a deposit. Multiple recalls and quality problems dogged the Cybertruck Then there were the build problems: two official investigations by U.S. federal traffic safety officials and eight recalls in all just for the 2024 model year. The most recent was perhaps also the most damaging for its image, as customers shared videos online in which they complained the glue holding parts of the truck's stainless steel exterior sheet metal in place failed, causing the panels to dangle precariously. The questionable quality of its underlying engineering was furthermore shown in numerous videos. Most notably, critics criticized Tesla's decision to substitute a conventional steel frame for less durable aluminum castings that can break when towing enough weight. On Tesla fan forums, opinions are now divided as to what if anything should be done about Musk's expensive flop. Some argue the vehicle should be scrapped for a more conventional look while others feel its iconoclastic take on the otherwise timeless pickup ought to be kept as Musk intended. Some relief should come in the current quarter as buyers previously on the fence could opt in favor of a purchase before the $7,500 federal tax credit expires at the end of September. 'The second half of the year will be a critical test of EV demand. Q3 will likely be a record, followed by a collapse in Q4,' argued Stephanie Valdez Streaty, senior analyst for Cox Automotive.
