Badminton: Shida, Matsuyama fall to Malaysian pair at Japan Open

Kyodo News2 days ago
TOKYO - Host nation favorites Chiharu Shida and Nami Matsuyama were knocked out in the semifinals of the women's doubles at the Japan Open badminton championships on Saturday.
Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan rolled to a 21-13, 21-11 victory over the Paris Olympics bronze medalists, who have decided to part ways after the world championships in the French capital next month.
"In the end, we couldn't play our game at all," Matsuyama said after the doubles pair's last match in front of home fans.
The Malaysian pair turned around a 4-3 deficit by winning eight straight points in the first game in the rematch of the bronze medal contest at the Paris Games.
After that, they never allowed their Japanese opponents back into the contest at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
No Japanese player was left at the championships after all three of the country's remaining singles players also lost in the semifinals -- Akane Yamaguchi and Riko Gunji in the women's draw and Koki Watanabe on the men's side.
China's Wang Zhiyi defeated Yamaguchi 21-15, 21-18, while South Korea's An Se Young trounced Gunji 21-12, 21-10.
France's Alex Lanier defeated Watanabe 21-19, 21-15.

Artistic swimming: Japan earns silver in team free routine at worlds

SINGAPORE (Kyodo) -- Japan took the artistic swimming team free silver medal at the world aquatics championships Sunday in Singapore. Japan scored 334.7232 points to earn a medal in the discipline for the fourth straight world championships. China won gold with 348.4779, while Spain rounded out the podium with 321.1328. It was a positive result for Japan as more than half of its squad were replaced after the nation, traditionally strong in artistic swimming, was shut out of the medals at last year's Paris Olympics. "We tried to finish as high as possible," said Tomoka Sato, 23, a Paris Games holdover and captain of the team in Singapore. In the team free routine preliminary round a day earlier, Japan was third behind China and Spain.

Baseball: Ohtani hits 34th home run but Dodgers suffer another loss

LOS ANGELES - Shohei Ohtani homered for the second consecutive game, but the Los Angeles Dodgers' recent struggles continued with a 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Ohtani's opposite-field, two-run shot off Jose Quintana, his 34th home run of the season, pushed the home team's lead to 3-0 in the third inning. The Dodgers, however, ended up losing for the 10th time in 12 games. The two-way Japanese star is now second in the National League home run race behind Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who homered twice in Sunday's 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to push his tally to 35. Ohtani, batting second for the first time this year with Mookie Betts leading off, went 1-for-3 with the two RBIs and a walk at Dodger Stadium. The Brewers turned the game around by scoring three runs each in the fourth and sixth innings on their way to sweeping the three-game series. A pair of run-scoring errors by the Dodgers came after two outs in the fourth, leading to Clayton Kershaw's earlier-than-expected exit from the mound. The game ended when Betts lined out to center with the bases loaded after the Dodgers scored a run in the ninth.

Shi beats Lanier to win Japan Open badminton title

badminton China's former badminton world number one Shi Yuqi won the Japan Open title on Sunday, beating French defending champion Alex Lanier 21-17, 21-15 in the final. South Korea's An Se-young downed China's Wang Zhiyi 21-12, 21-10 in the women's final to capture an incredible sixth title in seven tournaments so far this year. Shi was replaced at the top of the men's world rankings by Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in June, but he was too good for rising star Lanier in Tokyo. The Chinese player came out on top after a close first game and wore his 20-year-old opponent down to close out the match in 50 minutes. "I wanted to take it at my own pace, and even if I was losing I knew it was important to dig in," said current world number three Shi, who won his third title of the year. "My opponent is young and he has a lot of physical strength, so I knew I had to stick to my own style." Lanier won his first major senior title in Tokyo last year and he followed it up with victory at the European Championships in April. He will attempt to win the world title in front of his home fans in Paris next month, but he admitted he felt pressure in Tokyo as the defending champion. "I don't think that it is affecting me mentally, but physically you play with a bit more pressure," he said. "The movements are a bit less relaxed and there are some distractions in the timing, in the footwork." World women's number one An extended her remarkable run of form with a dominating win over second-seeded Wang. An's only defeat this year came in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open last month. "I always have areas that need to be improved on so I work on those in training," said the 23-year-old An, who won gold at last year's Paris Olympics. "I challenge myself and that's what leads to these results -- I put in extra effort on the things that need improving." China's Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin took the mixed doubles title, beating Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Suprissara Paewsampran 21-19, 16-21, 21-15 in the final. China also came out on top in women's doubles, with the top-seeded pair of Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning beating Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 21-15, 21-14. South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Seo Sueng-jae won the men's doubles final 21-16, 21-17 over Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin. © 2025 AFP
