ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael McGreevy tossed six scoreless innings, Jordan Walker homered and drove in a pair of runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0 Friday night. McGreevy (4-2) allowed six hits and a walk, and Matt Svanson, JoJo Romero and Riley O'Brien pitched the final three shutout innings in relief. Matthew Boyd (11-5) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three in five innings for the Cubs, who have lost four of their last six games. Walker hit his fourth home run of the season off Ryan Brasier in the sixth inning to put the Cardinals ahead 4-0. It was Walker's first homer since May 17 at Kansas City. Iván Herrera hit a sacrifice fly, and Willson Contreras added an RBI single in the fifth inning to extend the Cardinals' lead to 3-0. St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Alec Burleson singled, Masyn Winn followed with a double and Walker hit an RBI single that just eluded Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson. Former All-Star catcher Yadier Molina was in uniform and in the Cardinals' dugout as a temporary coach. Brewers hold off skidding Mets 3-2 for 7th straight win thanks to Perkins' throw
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Center fielder Blake Perkins threw out Starling Marte at the plate to end the game as the surging Milwaukee Brewers hung on to defeat the slumping New York Mets 3-2 on Friday night. Brice Turang hit a two-run homer for the Brewers, who improved to a major league-best 71-44 by earning their seventh consecutive victory in front of a season-high crowd of 43,469. Marte and Juan Soto went deep for the Mets, who have lost five straight and nine of 10. After Marte doubled on an 0-2 pitch from Trevor Megill with two outs in the ninth inning, Jeff McNeil singled to center. Perkins grabbed the ball on a bounce and made a one-hop throw to catcher William Contreras, who tagged out Marte. The Mets challenged the call, but replays showed Contreras tagged a sliding Marte before the runner's left hand hit the plate. Milwaukee scored all its runs in the fifth to erase a 2-0 deficit. Turang's homer off Kodai Senga (7-4) tied the game, and Isaac Collins was hit on the shoe by an 0-2 pitch from Brooks Raley with the bases loaded to bring home the go-ahead run. Dan Campbell gives positive update on Morice Norris
Lions safety Morice Norris was transported to an Atlanta hospital Friday night after taking a knee to the head. Lions coach Dan Campbell offered an update after the game was suspended, with the final 14:50 unplayed. "Obviously thoughts and prayers with Mo Norris," Campbell said. "We got some positive information on him when he [arrived] at the hospital. I'll have to just leave it like that. When something like that happens, it puts things in perspective. We're just praying for Mo." Campbell then expounded on the positive news. "He's breathing. He's talking. It's good. He's got some movement," Campbell said. "Now, they're running more tests." Norris was trying to tackle Falcons running back Nathan Carter on the first play of the fourth quarter when Carter's knee inadvertently hit Norris' head. Norris immediately went limp. Medical personnel worked on Norris for 20 minutes before he was loaded into an ambulance that was driven out to midfield. "It's an eye-opener," Campbell said. "It hits. It hits a little different. It puts things in perspective. Man, it's a violent game, and we love it, but when something like this happens, the silver lining is, man, the brotherhood. To see all those guys, from that team, our team, kind of come together and everybody thinking about another player means a lot." When play resumed, Falcons quarterback Emory Jones took a snap and held the ball. The players eventually gathered in a circle, held hands and bowed their heads. Finally, with 6:31 remaining, officials called the game, something both head coaches already had agreed to do. "Though that was the right thing to do," Falcons coach Raheem Morris said. Campbell said Norris' mother is at the hospital with him, and some members of the staff will stay behind until Norris is ready to go home.
