New Madrid coach Xabi Alonso hails return ‘home' but plans new era
DPA
Madrid
New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso aims to bind his connection to the history of the club with a new era of dominance.
'It's certainly a very special day that I'll be marking in my diary for the rest of my life. I feel at home here and I'm happy to be here,' an emotional Alonso said on Monday during his presentation in the Spanish capital.
'The connection to Madrid has always been there and this feeling has been rekindled.' The former Bayer Leverkusen coach replaces Brazil-bound Carlo Ancelotti and will officially take up the post on June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup in the US from mid-June.
Ancelotti coached Alonso during his first spell as Madrid coach and also at Bayern Munich.
'I will not forget Carlo. He was a coach who moulded me, a great person. I take over from him with honour and pride and hope that I can live up to expectations,' said Alonso.
'It's the start of a new era.' Madrid president Florentino Pérez said Alonso was one of the 'greatest legends' of Spanish football having won the 2010 World Cup, two European Championships, the 2014 Champions League at Madrid and trophies at Liverpool and Bayern before turning to coaching and giving Leverkusen their first Bundesliga title.
'You are returning to take on one of the greatest challenges of your life,' Pérez added.
Alonso, who won a league and cup double while going unbeaten domestically with Leverkusen last season, finished second to Bayern this term. He is being replaced by Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo set to stay at Al Nassr with another World Cup looming
dpa Munich Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly ended speculation about his club future, saying he will continue to play at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr as he also probably also sets his sights on next year's World Cup. 'Nothing is going to change. Playing at Al-Nassr? Yes,' he was quoted as saying early Monday by multiple reports after captaining Portugal to the Nations League title in Munich. Ronaldo, 40, joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after falling out with coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. His current contract is until June 30. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had recently suggested that Ronaldo could move to a side qualified for the upcoming Club World Cup. Ronaldo on Saturday confirmed talks but said he won't be at the tournament in the United States. On Sunday, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties to give Ronaldo and his team a third trophy, the others being at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. 'I have many titles but there is nothing better than winning with the national team,' the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Ronaldo scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 61st minute which eventually set up the shoot-out, but came off in the 88th with an apparant thigh problem. He had also scored the 2-1 winner in Wednesday's semi-final against Germany. The two goals brought his tally to 138, from 221 caps, which are both world records in the men's game. Coach Robert Martinez said that Ronaldo had played a 'decisive role' in winning the title, after some had expressed scepticism whether the veteran still had a lot to give. Martinez has also come under criticism, mainly from the Portuguese media, over not always glorious performances of the team. Ronaldo named the criticism 'unfair,' and Portugal did indeed impress in Germany with well-executed tactics that stopped the resurgent host team and than also the classy Spaniards around their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Ronaldo won the duel of the generations agianst the 17-year-old Yamal on the night but they may meet again at next year's World Cup, a title still eluding Ronaldo. Sunday's final showed that Ronaldo can still electrify the fans, and the hosting Americans, Canadians and Mexicans are expected to share the excitement in what would be his sixth World Cup. For Nuno Mendes, the Man of the Match on Sunday with a goal and assist as well as containing Yamal, there is no doubt about Ronaldo's value. 'He helps us a lot. He has a winning mentality. He is a role model. We are happy to have him,' Mendes said.

Marc extends his lead at Aragon MotoGP in style
Agencies Alcaniz (Spain) A confidence personified Marc Marquez eased to victory over his younger brother Alex in the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday to extend his lead in this season's title race. The six-time world champion Marc led from start to finish on his Ducati to record his seventh win in this race from 11 starts and his fourth victory of the campaign. He leads his brother by 32 points after eight of the 22-race programme with two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, who was third, 93 points adrift. Marc is well set for a seventh world title which would bring him level with Valentino Rossi and one shy of the record held by the latter's fellow Italian Giacomo Agostini. 'Yes a perfect weekend,' said Marc Marquez, who became the first rider since he did the same in the 2015 German MotoGP to top all the practice sessions, take pole and win the race. 'I was more serious than usual as I felt I couldn't afford to make mistakes. 'I rode in a very good way,' added Marc, who ended a three-race losing streak. The two brothers got off their bikes halfway round the victory lap and jumped into each other's arms, though, unable to kiss as they still had their helmets on and sending the 50,000 spectators wild. 'To be brothers and Spanish in front of a home crowd is extra special for me,' said Alex Marquez, who at 29 is three years his brother's junior. Marc echoed his words and said it made up for the disappointment of the Spanish MotoGP in April when Alex won but he only finished 12th. 'I was sad when he won the race in Jerez,' he said. 'Let's see in Catalunya if we can repeat that but hopefully we swap positions and Alex wins.' A podium finish put a smile back on the face of Marc's Ducati team-mate Bagnaia, who had described Saturday's 12th spot in the sprint as the 'toughest of his career.' 'Today I recovered a lot of confidence and I can go to Mugello in a fortnight with a spring in my step,' said Bagnaia. Marc Marquez got a great start leading Alex, but the other front row sitter Franco Morbidelli fell well back to seventh spot, whilst Bagnaia shot through from the second row to take third spot. Bagnaia turned the pressure on Alex Marquez but after a while he dropped off and was trading third and fourth places with Pedro Acosta over the opening few laps. Indeed the Marquez brothers opened a gap back to Bagnaia, Acosta, Brad Binder and Morbidelli, who had recovered a bit from his sluggish start. By halfway Marc Marquez posted the fastest lap thus far and extended his lead to over two seconds. It was also the moment that South African rider Binder's hopes of recording his best result of a poor campaign were dashed as he slid off.
