Hundreds of firefighters tackle major forest blaze west of Madrid

DPA Madrid Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers in Spain were battling a devastating forest fire to the west of Madrid for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. Strong winds were fuelling the flames in the province of Ávila, where large amounts of combustible undergrowth are found in often inadequately maintained forests. Fire brigades are fighting another forest fire in Las Hurdes, in the Cáceres region. Around 200 people had to leave their homes as a precaution, Spanish media cited the police as saying. Estimates based on data from the European Earth observation system Copernicus suggested that around 3,000 hectares of forest and bushland in the region of Cuevas del Valle in Ávila have already been affected by the flames, the newspaper El País reported. The fire broke out shortly before midnight on Monday in the mountainous region for initially unknown reasons. According to media reports, arson cannot be ruled out. The fire broke out exactly 16 years to the day after the start of a major forest fire in the same region in 2009, and also in the late evening when firefighting planes cannot be deployed, in an area where there were neither country houses nor agricultural activities. In addition to several fire brigades, the military emergency unit UME was deployed. More than 20 firefighting planes and helicopters dropped water over the fire sites.

54 minors swim from Morocco to Ceuta

DPA Madrid Fifty-four minors swam from Morocco across the Mediterranean to the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta, mostly Moroccans, state Spanish TV channel RTVE reported on Saturday. Rescuers were in action all night and the following day to save swimmers, the report said, of the sea from Morocco to Ceuta that spans some 300 and 500 metres. Television images showed some of the migrants being brought to the beach of Ceuta in an inflatable boat. No fatalities were initially reported. While adults are usually quickly sent back, unaccompanied minors are allowed to stay at least until they are 18. However, the reception capacities are overwhelmed and the regional government asked the central government in Madrid to bring young people to the mainland. Migrants repeatedly try to reach one of the two Spanish exclaves in North Africa from Morocco, but many risk the journey from Morocco and other African countries seeking a better life and freedom from conflict and hardship. The largest number of migrants reached Ceuta by sea on May 17, 2021, when some 8,000 people swam to Ceuta or walked along the beach and climbed over the border fence.

New Madrid coach Xabi Alonso hails return ‘home' but plans new era

DPA Madrid New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso aims to bind his connection to the history of the club with a new era of dominance. 'It's certainly a very special day that I'll be marking in my diary for the rest of my life. I feel at home here and I'm happy to be here,' an emotional Alonso said on Monday during his presentation in the Spanish capital. 'The connection to Madrid has always been there and this feeling has been rekindled.' The former Bayer Leverkusen coach replaces Brazil-bound Carlo Ancelotti and will officially take up the post on June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup in the US from mid-June. Ancelotti coached Alonso during his first spell as Madrid coach and also at Bayern Munich. 'I will not forget Carlo. He was a coach who moulded me, a great person. I take over from him with honour and pride and hope that I can live up to expectations,' said Alonso. 'It's the start of a new era.' Madrid president Florentino Pérez said Alonso was one of the 'greatest legends' of Spanish football having won the 2010 World Cup, two European Championships, the 2014 Champions League at Madrid and trophies at Liverpool and Bayern before turning to coaching and giving Leverkusen their first Bundesliga title. 'You are returning to take on one of the greatest challenges of your life,' Pérez added. Alonso, who won a league and cup double while going unbeaten domestically with Leverkusen last season, finished second to Bayern this term. He is being replaced by Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
