Markram Backed For Strong Comeback: 'Couple Of Games Away From Unlocking That State Of Genius'
South Africa coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in skipper Aiden Markram, believing he is close to reaching a 'state of genius" and achieving exceptional performance levels with just a few more games. Markram, who has gone 31 innings without a T20I half-century, scored only 31 runs in three matches during the recent T20 series against Australia.
In a thrilling final over, Australia clinched victory in a closely contested series-decider in Cairns, with Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 62 runs off 36 deliveries propelling the hosts over the line on the penultimate delivery. This victory secured a 2-1 series win for Australia over South Africa. Maxwell's performance earned him the Player of the Match award, while Tim David, with 150 runs in three matches, was named Player of the Series.
'I know it's a different format, but in the World Test Championship final not so long ago, Aiden showed exactly what he is about. And I'm sure he is a couple of games away from unlocking that state of genius," Shukri Conrad was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Conrad acknowledged that South Africa was 'a batter light" but suggested that if the players showed more self-confidence, it could benefit the Proteas.
'If we want to be brave, we have got to select attacks to beat a team like Australia and if I can nudge a batting unit into playing a certain way where we are a batter light and I concede we were a batter light, imagine what they can do when we have got a properly balanced side," he added.
With the series level at 1-1 after Proteas Dewald Brevis' stunning maiden century in the second T20I and a clinical bowling effort leading Australia to victory in the first game, the home side was tasked with chasing down 173 to claim the series.
Australia and South Africa will next face off in a three-match ODI series starting Tuesday, 19 August in Cairns.

'There's No One Who Can Replace Rohit': Rayudu Wants Hitman To Captain India In 2027 ODI World Cup
Rohit has won two ICC titles as India captain, and under his leadership, India also finished as runners-up in the 2023 edition of the men's ODI World Cup and WTC final. Former Indian middle-order batter Ambati Rayudu has reserved big praise for India's ODI captain, Rohit Sharma. According to Rayudu, who, after playing 55 ODIs and six T20Is for India from 2013 to 2019, quit international cricket and donned the hat of an expert, no one can replace Rohit in ODIs. Rayudu feels Rohit's batting, his captaincy and the confidence he gives to all the players are extremely important, and the 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai must captain the Men in Blue in the ODI World Cup 2027. 'You need to look at who can win you the World Cup. If Rohit's captaincy can do that, then he should continue till 2027. There is no one who can replace Rohit in ODIs; his captaincy, his batting & the confidence he gives to players are all extremely important – Rohit must be the captain in the 2027 World Cup," Rayudu said on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel. The 2027 edition of the men's 50-over mega event will be played across multiple venues in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in October-November. A total of 14 teams will feature in the ODI World Cup in a couple of years' time. In the 2023 edition of the men's ODI World Cup, India finished as runners-up under Rohit Sharma's leadership. India won all nine league matches and the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, to book a place in the summit clash, but in the title decider, they went down by six wickets against the Pat Cummins-led Australian team. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit scored a total of 597 runs to finish as the second-highest run getter. His batting average in the 2023 World Cup was 54.27, and he scored runs with a strike rate of 125.94. In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit, with the help of five centuries and one fifty, scored 648 runs. But India failed to qualify for the final under Virat Kohli's leadership. In the 2015 World Cup as well, Rohit impressed with his batting, but India's campaign came to an end in the semifinal itself. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
