Kolkata: The Bengal government on Tuesday unveiled a two-month "Amader Para, Amader Samadhan (Our Neighbourhood, Our Solution)" scheme to solve neighbourhood problems across 80,000 booths in the state.
The scheme, with a fund allotment of Rs 8,000 crore (Rs 10 lakh for every booth), will be launched on August 2 and will aim at finding locality-level solutions to problems like broken water pumps, short-stretch broken rural roads, out-of-order electricity poles and broken school roofs.
Bengal CM
Mamata Banerjee
announced the launch on Tuesday, a day after the Trinamool's massive Martyrs' Day show of strength. Bengal goes to vote for the 2026 assembly poll less than a year from now.

The Mamata Banerjee administration had launched a series of good-governance schemes — Duare Sarkar, Lakshmir Bhandar, Didi Ke Bolo and Paray Samadhan — just before the 2021 assembly poll as well. These schemes were credited with contributing significantly to the Trinamool's spectacular victory then; the party won 215 assembly seats to the BJP's 77 (down to 65 now after a series of bypoll losses over the last four years).

"This scheme may be a small programme but its scope is vast. This is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country. People will not need to reach out to the administration; instead, the administration will reach out to people. The aim is to listen to ground-level people's voices," Banerjee said at Nabanna on Tuesday.
"Neighbourhoods often need water pumps and fixing a portion of a rural road can help villagers avoid getting their feet soiled in mud.
We have extended power to many places but broken poles may be a problem somewhere. School roofs may have collapsed. This programme will tackle all such minor issues and solve them quickly," she said.
The camps will start from August 2 and each camp will cater to people from three booths for one day, where administration officers will take on-the-spot decisions. "Our motto is 'small is beautiful' and we want to reach the heart of every village.
All work will be done transparently through an online portal but people can submit their problems personally," Banerjee added.
The initial plan was to have one camp for every two booths but the number of booths was increased to three to ensure work could be completed in two months, the CM said.
A task force led by chief secretary Manoj Pant, with the finance secretary and other key department officers, will oversee implementation at the state level; this will be replicated in every district, with cops to be a part of the team.
"There will be a 15-day break for Durga Puja but we will cover all booths," she added.
Old schemes like Duare Sarkar would continue in December to complete all pending work, Banerjee said, adding that there were fresh applications for Laxmi Bhandar and distribution of caste certificates. "Pending court cases have stalled some of the work but we will complete everything," she said.

Suvendu Adhikari Alleges Brutal Attack On BJP Leader In Kolkata

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition and veteran BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday, had alleged a brutal attack on a local-level BJP leader by a group of illegal Rohingya infiltrators on the streets of Kolkata. He had also uploaded a video on his X account where the local-level BJP leader with blood and severe injury marks on his face was seen narrating the story of the attack on him. LoP Adhikari also issued a statement earlier on Saturday morning, which he posted on his official X account, and claimed that Debashish Biswas, a BJP worker and a resident of the area under Behal (East) constituency in Kolkata, was attacked on the streets by a group of illegal Rohingya infiltrators on Friday. "Yesterday, he saw a few Rohingya Muslims openly consuming marijuana on the street in front of his house and protested against it. Immediately after, one of them attacked Debashish with a knife and scissors, resulting in severe injuries to Debashish, with deep wounds on his face and various parts of his body," he claimed in the statement. The Leader of the Opposition had claimed that these illegal Rohingya infiltrators have now started openly flouting the law in public places and doing whatever they wish, and on being protested, they resorted to launching life-threatening attacks on Debashish. He also accused the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of nurturing and protecting them for her political gains and claimed that the police have removed the main accused "for security reasons". The Leader of the Opposition also said that such anti-social activities were now rampant in the heart of the state's capital Kolkata as there was no law and order in the state. According to LoP Adhikari, the state police's current job was to serve as loyal followers and cater to the small, medium, and big leaders of the Trinamool Congress. "Moreover, for a particular community, the law is not enforced in the state; the police have no authority to take any action against them because they are Mamata Banerjee's vote bank. They can openly flout the law on public streets and do whatever they please, and if someone protests, they do not hesitate to launch life-threatening attacks on the protester. These individuals are nurtured and protected in this state by Mamata Banerjee herself for her political gains," the BJP leader said. At the time the report was filed, there was no reaction in the matter either from the police administration or from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Sule criticises Maharashtra government over rise in crime, alleges Rs 4,900 crore scam in Ladki Bahin scheme

MUMBAI: NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Mahayuti government for failing to address the rising crime rate in Maharashtra, accusing it of being a mute spectator as miscreants had no fear of the law. Speaking to reporters here, the Baramati MP claimed that a Rs 4,900 crore scam had taken place in the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yogana, the government's flagship scheme that provides a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women. She said parts of the state, including Pune and Beed districts, have witnessed a steady surge in crimes, while the government remains a mute spectator. "People have lost faith in the system. There is no fear of the law. Who is backing these criminals? Instead of looking into these questions, the government chooses to stay silent," she said. Sule criticised the delay in the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the 2022 murder of Parli-based businessman Mahadev Munde. "Only after Munde's wife, Dnyaneshwari, attempted self-immolation and met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, did the government act. We demand a fair and transparent probe by the SIT," she said. Sule also raised concerns about the recent communal unrest at Yavat in Daund tehsil, where groups of persons, angered by a social media post, vandalised and set ablaze properties.

Malegaon blast case: Sadhvi Pragya says she was tortured to name PM Modi; forced to lie about Yogi

Sadhvi Pargya NEW DELHI: Sadhvi Pragya, recently acquitted of terror charges in the Malegaon blast case , claimed on Saturday that she was "tortured and forced to name Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, and others". The fomer Bhopal MP said she did not name them, as it was "a clear attempt to coerce her into lying". After nearly 17 years, a special NIA court in Mumbai on July 31 acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. All were already out on bail. The blast, which struck Malegaon town in Nashik district on September 29, 2008, killed six people and injured over 100. The court ordered compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to each injured victim. In its verdict, the court noted that the chassis number of the motorcycle allegedly used in the blast had been wiped out. It also ruled that there was no reliable evidence proving that Thakur owned the vehicle. The court further observed that she had taken sanyas (renunciation) two years prior to the incident and had given up material possessions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo What happened in 2008 An explosive device, allegedly strapped to a motorcycle, detonated near a mosque during the holy month of Ramzan and on the eve of Navratri festivities. Among the other accused acquitted are Major Ramesh Upadhyay (Retd), Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi. The ATS had alleged that the motorcycle used in the blast belonged to Thakur, while Purohit brought the RDX from Jammu and Kashmir and stored it in his house. Both denied the allegations. They were acquitted from charges under various stringent sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including committing a terrorist act, conspiring to commit a terrorist act, criminal conspiracy, murder, and promoting enmity between religious groups. The investigation, initially led by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) under the late Hemant Karkare, quickly led to the arrest of Thakur and now Purohit in late 2008. The ATS, at the time, alleged, for the first time, the involvement of "saffron extremists" and linked the accused to a larger conspiracy, including other blast cases. Investigations into the alleged larger conspiracy of the Abhinav Bharat organization allegedly brought to light a series of crucial meetings, painting a picture of a group purportedly intent on avenging perceived atrocities against Hindus and establishing a "Central Hindu Government" (Aryawart). The prosecution contended that these gatherings demonstrate a calculated effort to strike terror by orchestrating a bomb blast in Malegaon, a Muslim-dominated area. The case took a significant turn when it was transferred to the NIA in 2011. In 2015, special public prosecutor Rohini Salian publicly alleged that the NIA had instructed her to "go soft" on the accused, leading to a change in prosecution. The NIA's supplementary chargesheet in May 2016, accusing the ATS of planting RDX traces to frame Purohit and, notably, giving a clean chit to Thakur and others, citing insufficient evidence. Despite the NIA's stance, the special court on December 27, 2017, ruled that seven accused, including Thakur and Purohit, would face trial under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), though charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) were dropped. Finally, on October 30, 2018, terror and murder charges were formally framed against Thakur, Purohit, and five others. The trial, commenced on Dec 3, 2018. The proceedings were also characterized by over 323 prosecution witnesses, with 37 turning hostile, and a rejected plea for an in-camera trial. The trial also saw numerous dramatic moments. In June 2019, Pragya Singh Thakur, by then an elected Member of Parliament from Bhopal, famously caused a stir in court, complaining about the "dirty and small" chair and the "dusty" courtroom. The recording of final statements from the accused concluded in 2024, followed by the examination of eight defence witnesses. The long journey to judgment also saw five different judges preside over the case, with the tenure of the current special judge, A K Lahoti, recently extended by the Bombay high court till August 31, 2025, to ensure he could deliver the verdict. Final arguments concluded in April 2025, and after a brief adjournment from May 8, the matter was finally reserved for the verdict.
