IND vs ENG: Varun Aaron says India are now in a position to win Oval Test

Indian Express6 days ago
The fate of the fifth India vs England Test — and the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy — is on the line with England needing just 35 runs to win the game and secure the series by a 3-1 margin while India need four wickets to level the series at 2-2.
With both teams could win the final game from this stage, former India bowler Varun Aaron believes that India are now in a position to win Oval Test.
'Even a 10–15 minute extra break can do wonders for a team. It (the break on Sunday due to rain) gave the players time to regroup in the dressing room, talk strategy, and recover physically. I'm sure the message in the room was clear—'We've worked too hard over the past 60 days to let this game slip.' This team has travelled all the way from India and dominated large parts of the series. A series draw is the least they deserve. A loss from this position would really hurt. But after that spirited bowling spell post-tea, I genuinely believe India are now in a position to win this match,' Aaron said on JioHotstar.
Aaron also spoke at length about Prasidh Krishna's impact, and said that the turning point in the game was created by the pacer's pressure on Jacob Bethell.
'Bowling the right length was key because Jacob Bethell didn't look comfortable at all. The way he stepped out was a clear sign of pressure. Prasidh wasn't giving away easy singles, and I think Bethell's approach disrupted England's momentum. Until then, Harry Brook and Joe Root were rotating strike well and picking up boundaries. But the moment Bethell came in, it felt like a full stop in their innings. He couldn't absorb the pressure—either trying to hit a four or just defending, with nothing in between. That dismissal—and more importantly, the quiet period leading up to it—brought India right back into the game,' Aaron said.
Aaron also praised the crowd at the Oval and praised the bowling intensity post-tea of Shubman Gill's team.
'Talking about the fans, it really felt like I was watching the game at Wankhede. There were Ganpati chants, India chants—I couldn't hear the English supporters at all. The Indian supporters are out in huge numbers, and I think it's their energy that the Indian team is feeding off. Siraj and Prasidh bowled five high-intensity overs each after tea, and that effort resulted in two crucial wickets. Siraj was quite unlucky, as he has been throughout the day—he bowled unbelievably well. So many of his deliveries hit the pad, but he just didn't get the LBW calls. England now find themselves in a tough spot, and I genuinely feel this break is going to do India a world of good. The bowlers get to rest, stretch, have a massage, and get some treatment from the physios. They can come back fresh and give it everything again. This post-tea session has been brilliant—accurate bowling, smart captaincy by Shubman Gill who didn't allow easy singles, and two very important wickets,' Aaron said.

'I'll drop you from the team...': How coach Gambhir and captain SKY helped Samson erase doubts after India comeback

Sanju Samson has opened up about his rollercoaster journey in international cricket and how Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav's trust after the 2024 T20 World Cup boosted his confidence. Samson has produced match-winning performances for India since making his return to the team. read more Sanju Samson's journey in international cricket has been full of ups and downs. He had been in and out of the team ever since his debut way back in 2015. His next match after his first T20I for India came five years later in 2020. Samson recently touched upon the tough phase of his career during an interview with former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin. Speaking on Ashwin's YouTube show Kutti Stories with Ash, Samson said it was hard for him to deal with the feelings of not getting regular chances to prove himself on the big stage. However, the Rajasthan Royals captain said he always tried to stay positive and not worry too much about things he couldn't control. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Being on and off the team was happening for a long time then honestly, it wasn't easy, Anna. It was not easy to have those kinds of feelings… I had already played some 8-9 years of international cricket, and I'd just played 15 games. I was there, and I was not there. I was there, and I was not there. And I always tried to keep myself in a positive frame of mind I kept assuring myself that it would happen, and different people have different journeys. Your journey is different. Respect that, and be mindful of that, and you will get there whenever you are meant to be,' Samson said. Samson reveals how Gambhir and SKY helped However, things changed after the 2024 T20 World Cup when a transition occurred in the Indian team following their historic triumph. Senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired, and head coach Rahul Dravid stepped down, citing the end of his contract. Gautam Gambhir came in as an all-format coach, and Suryakumar Yadav became the Indian T20 captain. Samson revealed that he was playing a Duleep Trophy match in Andhra Pradesh when SKY personally gave him a message. Samson said that the Indian captain assured him of a place in the upcoming games and told him he would be opening the batting. 'And suddenly, the change happened after the [T20] World Cup. Gautam bhai came in, and then Surya came in as the Captain. I was playing a Duleep Trophy game in Andhra. Surya was playing for another team on a different ground at the same time. That's where Surya told me, 'Chetta, there is a huge opportunity coming up for you. We have seven games lined up. And I am going to give you all seven games as an opener.' I was like, 'super da…' Seven games! Hearing it from the captain's mouth itself… that felt great,' Samson said. However, Samson didn't perform well in the first two games against Sri Lanka, where he got out for ducks. But he made a strong comeback in the subsequent matches and scored three centuries, including two against South Africa. Samson revealed the chat he had with Gambhir after getting those ducks. 'And then I played two games in Sri Lanka after that I was out for ducks in both the matches. The memories of being in and out of the team started flooding in, and I thought that was it. I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gauti bhai saw it. He came upto me, and asked what had happened. I told him that I didn't capitalise on the chance that I got and he was like… 'So? I'll drop you from the team only if you have scored 21 ducks.' He might have just told 21 as an arbitrary number but that confidence from the captain and the coach elevated my feel. It told me that they really trusted me, and they wanted me to do well and that really helped me to do what I did after that.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ever since Gambhir and SKY took charge of the Indian team, Samson has been getting regular opportunities. However, the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter is yet to fully live up to his potential. With India set to co-host the 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, Samson will hope to cement his place in the squad.

Few New Zealand players arrive in Chennai to prepare for womens World Cup

Chennai, Aug 10 (PTI) With the women's Cricket World Cup less than two months away, several key New Zealand players have arrived in Chennai to ramp up their preparations for the global event, to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. Seven cricketers in the 10-member team are centrally contracted and will undergo a two-week camp at the Chennai Super Kings academy here under head coach Ben Sawyer and assistant coach Craig McMillan. The seven contracted players include seam all-rounder Jess Kerr, young opener Georgia Plimmer and all-rounder Brooke Halliday, while Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire and Emma McLeod are the emerging players. The White Ferns are the current Women's T20 World Cup holders and would be aiming to secure a rare double by winning the prestigious event, starting September 30. Sawyer said the decision to organise training in India was taken keeping in mind weather conditions back home. "It's currently winter in New Zealand, there's no cricket and we're nearly two months out of the World Cup. To have that prep time in India, we've been able to bring seven contracted players and then three of our players of interest along," Sawyer was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. "So, the girls that we think will play lots of cricket in India in the future as well." The management is also taking the advice of High Performance Sport New Zealand and a dietitian on how to best acclimatise to the subcontinental conditions. "We've actually tried to train really hard the last five days and I guess in a way not to recover, try to just do it naturally and let your bodies adapt to the conditions," said Sawyer. "And now we're playing the three games, we'll try and recover really well. But yeah, we've actually tried to expose ourselves as much to the heat as we can." After the training stint in India, the group fly to Dubai for the One-dayers against England and the warm-ups ahead of the Women's Cricket World Cup against South Africa and India in Bengaluru. "It's hugely beneficial and even more so this year because we've had no official matches since February," Sawyer added. "So to get these three one-day games in Chennai, to get two or three games in Dubai against England, a really strong opposition, will be great and then we also get the two World Cup warm-up games. So that's seven or eight games we're going to get in similar conditions. Yeah, that's just huge for us." New Zealand open their campaign against trans-Tasman rivals Australia in Indore on October 1.
