
Mammoth UGD charges upset Coimbatore residents
Coimbatore Corporation had recently passed a resolution stipulating revised monthly UGD user charges, to be assessed based on the size of buildings. As per the revised structure, residential buildings up to 600 sq.ft. are to be charged ₹120 per month; 601 to 1,200 sq.ft. at ₹150; 1,201 to 1,800 sq.ft. at ₹180; 1,801 to 3,500 sq.ft. at ₹210; 3,501 to 5,000 sq.ft. at ₹250; 5,001 to 10,000 sq.ft. at ₹280; and properties above 10,000 sq.ft. at ₹300 per month.
However, several residents have discovered significantly inflated figures on the citizen web portal, where property taxes are also managed.
P. Srinivasan, a resident of Gandhipark, said, 'The Corporation recently provided me with the UGD connection book, similar to property and water tax documents. Although no payment demand was explicitly made, I checked my account online and was shocked. My building falls within the 1,801 to 3,500 sq.ft. slab, which, as per the newly proposed ₹210 per month, would only amount to approximately ₹22,680 from 2017 to 2025. Yet, the portal shows a demand of ₹3,30,000.'
A similar situation was reported by a resident in Nanjundapuram. For an 1,100 sqft building, the expected charge for nine years (at ₹150 per month) should be ₹16,200. However, the total displayed demand was ₹1,36,000.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, emphasised the need for clarity. 'The State government must clarify the basis on which these charges are calculated, as there is a complete lack of transparency. Given that there were no regular monthly charges for paid UGD previously, when the civic body begins collection, it should be well-prepared to avoid such errors,' he stated.
According to a senior Corporation official, any reported discrepancies will be investigated. They aim to ascertain if these are isolated cases or part of a wider problem, with steps taken to resolve them.

GCDA plans to transfer KK Road to Kochi Corporation after restoration work
The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is looking to offload Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road (KK Road), the only road under its ownership, by transferring it to the Kochi Corporation once the latest round of restoration work is over. Ever since its commissioning in 2004, the 3.20-km-long, 22-metre-wide 4-lane road has been one of the most-used arterial roads in the city connecting two major junctions – Kaloor and Kadavanthra – while also providing one of the most congestion-free routes between Vyttila and Kaloor. Most long-distance buses connecting the city to the south and southeast regions take this road to reach the Kaloor bus stand. Of late, KK Road has been in a sorry state with potholes marking large stretches. 'We have tendered restoration work worth ₹2 crore, which will get under way as soon as the rain relents somewhat. Once the work is over, consultations will be held with the Corporation authorities on the potential transfer,' said GCDA sources. The GCDA, it is being pointed out, has no separate allocation for the maintenance of roads, and hence its periodic repairs have been a significant drain on the authority's revenue. While the GCDA can undertake minor repair works, such as filling potholes, large-scale restoration works and resurfacing are not feasible, unlike the Corporation, which has a separate allocation for road maintenance. Mayor M. Anilkumar welcomed the proposal for the transfer of the road to the Corporation after the latest restoration work. 'As per the Town Planning Act, the development authorities have no authority to draw up development schemes on their own but can do so only on a resolution passed by the local body concerned. Even then, the project has to be restored with the local body once it is completed. In the case, of KK Road, the Corporation has not insisted on that considering its good relations with the GCDA,' he said. Notwithstanding its popularity among motorists and other sections of users since its commissioning, the road has drawn its share of flak over the years. For instance, the road was inaugurated multiple times. Initially, on completion of the two-lane road, and then again after it was widened as a four-lane road. In between, it remained almost abandoned for a couple of years after being dug up for a drinking water project.

Vegetable market near Maatuthavani is turning into another ‘Vellakal' as traders civic authorities dumped city's waste
The central vegetable market near Maatuthavani in the city is slowly turning into a 'Vellakal', apprehend traders after the Corporation authorities have been dumping truck loads of the garbage here. Speaking to The Hindu, the Central Market Federation president N. Chinnamayan said on Thursday that in the last fortnight alone, the dumping of waste through tipper lorries had increased manifold. Huge trucks which can carry around 10 tonnes are arriving here round the clock. Earlier, the vehicles on contract brought in vegetable waste. However, of late, all types of waste collected from hotels and hospitals were also being dumped here. 'The stench is unbearable and the air is filled with unpleasant smell', he said. The huge mountain of garbage dump now looks like another Vellakal, the spot, where the city's garbage is dumped by the Corporation, Mr Chinnamayan said and added that everyday, 10,000 to 15,000 people, including merchants and public visit the market place. Unclean water tanks Though there are about 12 to 15 water tanks placed in the market for the benefit of the public, only four or five or used by the visitors. While the tanks which are not functional are broken, those which are being used have not been cleaned at least for over three years, Mahendran, a merchant in the market said. The open urination around the corners of the market was yet another unhygienic practice followed by the drivers and the merchants who came from far and wide to unload the consignments. Lack of proper toilets and water facilities have forced the public to resort to open defecation. Ramanathan, a regular visitor from K Pudur, who purchases vegetables on a weekly basis, said that though the civic authorities charged rentals from shopkeepers, the infrastructural facilities were far from satisfactory. The merchants also said that the civic authorities were keen on collecting entry fee for the vehicles, but refused to spend money on the road. When a philanthropist came forward to donate ₹3 crore for the market's upkeep, the Corporation authorities discouraged such contribution. The Corporation was focused on collecting the rentals promptly and also imposed hike of 15 per cent once in three years. Officials say While the officials in the Health department in Madurai Corporation did not speak, when contacted, a sanitary inspector however, said that the merchants using the market refused to cooperate with the conservancy workers. When shopkeepers were told to leave 10 kg of waste, they dump in bulk quantities. On many occasion, the vegetable waste generated from the market was so huge that the private contractors engaged by the Corporation dumped them near the market. He denied dumping of medical waste and said that the roads would be laid soon.

Coimbatore Corporation to set up lounges for 108 staff and gig workers
Coimbatore Corporation has passed a special resolution to create lounges for ambulance drivers and staff attached to the 108 emergency service. The announcement was made by Mayor K. Ranganayaki, who presided over the council meeting held at Victoria Town Hall on Thursday. According to the Mayor, the facilities will be established in each of the city's five zones to ensure accessibility for personnel across different areas. Each facility will include basic amenities such as seating, drinking water, toilets, and shaded resting areas. An allocation of ₹1 crore has been made for the development of these facilities, she said. Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran announced separate lounges for gig workers involved in food and e-commerce delivery services. These lounges are likely to be established on Avinashi Road and DB Road, with a feasibility study currently under way, he said. Other than the council subjects, discussions were also held on the recent Government Order (GO) regarding the hike in penalty charges for buildings constructed without approval. As per the GO, which came into effect from July this year, the penalty has been increased to ₹88 per square foot for residential buildings and ₹110 per square foot for non-residential structures, up from the earlier ₹20–₹25 per square foot. Several councillors sought a reversal of the hike and urged the Commissioner to take up the matter with higher officials. The Commissioner informed the council that the issue would be discussed with senior authorities. Ahead of the meeting, Ward 84 Councillor R. Alima Begum staged a sit-in protest demanding the removal of the ABC centre at Ukkadam. Residents from Rose Park (ward 86) also gathered at the venue, raising concerns over the lack of drainage and road facilities in their locality. A total of 58 resolutions were tabled during the meeting, all of which were passed.
